Why is Shimapan so popular in anime?
Source: Baka to Test to Shoukanjuu
There are panty shots, and then there are striped panty shots. Striped panties are so popular among anime upskirts and fanservice that they’ve gotten their own special term: shimapan.
Decorated with horizontal stripes, usually blue and white, these undies are cute but sensible. You can thank Vocaloid’s Miku for popularizing the trend, and making stripes cool again.
The white panty shot is still an anime classic. but in the case of shimapan, stripes are definitely flattering!
Check out some of the best shimapan moments in anime!
Misaka sisters' shimapan
From Toaru Majutsu no Index (A Certain Magical Index)
It’s tough enough to tell identical sisters apart, but what do you do with a couple of clones? Check their underwear, of course. While the original Misaka wears shorts under her skirt (no upskirts for you here!), each of her clones wear striped panties, which makes for some fun games of “find the odd one out.”
Francesca's shimapan
From Strike Witches
Some characters show accidental panty shots. Others don’t even bother wearing pants or a skirt in the first place. Francesca somehow gets around wearing nothing but an oversized shirt and striped blue undies, and no one seems to question her. It must be a perk of being young and having a big gun.
Eclair'shimapan
From Dog Days
Eclair shows off her shimapan more than once in the series, but nothing beats the spontaneous full-body clothing rippage she suffers live on camera. Talk about overkill!
Michiru's shimapan
From Grisaia no Kajitsu (Le Fruit de la Grisaia)
Michiru has had a tough life, but that doesn’t stop her from being silly and showing off her charming personality… and her blue striped panties. They’re seen when she falls over in school, and when she falls over in the grass outside, and when she falls over at home. Boy, Michiru sure falls a lot.
Ayumu and Haruna's shimapan
From Haruna Kore wa Zombie Desu ka? (Is This a Zombie?)
Here we have not just one shimapan, but two gloriously pink panty shots. Sure, one is a guy, but when you’re getting panties flashed in your face you stare first and think later. Not that you’ll be capable of doing much thinking after Ayumu and Haruna’s epic Mystletainn Kick attack.
Akane's shimapan
From Psycho-Pass
Psycho Pass is not exactly a fanservice hub, but the shimapan also make an appearance even here. The intelligent and rational Akane wears some comfy looking green-striped panties. Considering they’re practically the only part of her outfit that isn’t a hologram, it’s a sensible choice, as expected of her.
Ito's shimapan
From Punch Line
Punchline is an ode to pantsu of all different kinds. No collection would be complete without the obligatory blue striped panties, like the ones everyone’s favorite shut-in Ito wears.
Eve's shimapan
From Needless
Here we get not one, not two, but three panty shots for the price of one, including Eve’s blue striped shimapan. It’s such a glorious sight, it makes grown men cry.
Mizore's shimapan
From Rosario to Vampire(Rosario + Vampire)
While other girls try to keep their panties from showing, Mizore just doesn’t seem to care. Let the wind blow and display her undies for the world to see! She has other things on her mind, anyway. Like how to become a better stalker...
Ao's shimapan
From Yozakura Quartet
There’s something innocent about Ao’s constantly flashing blue shimapan. Maybe because she’s the youngest (do demon ages work the same way?), but her panty shots just seem less like anime fanservice and more like a kid who doesn’t know any better. Whatever the reason, Ao sometimes pops into the anime just to show us her shimapan.
Ryuuko's shimapan
From Kill la Kill
Amid Kill La Kill’s over the top insanity, it’s not unusual to see Mako’s father, brother, and even dog drooling over Ryuuko’s shimapan as she changes (and on many other occasions). Perfectly normal. Moving along.
Chisame's shimapan
From Mahou Sensei Negima! (Negima!)
Chisame acts like a grumpy shut-in, but she cares enough to wear cute undies for the audien- er, that is, for herself.
Shiro's shimapan
From No Game No Life
Even 11 year old child geniuses are not safe from the anime pantyshot of doom. In fact, Shiro’s introduction consists of 100% panties, 0% face. Nice to meet you, pink shimapan.
WAG's shimapan
From Wake Up, Girls!
A proper dance routine for a high school idol band must be cute and bouncy. if that means a few (or a lot of) upskirt shots, so be it. The show must go on, right? It’s hard to tell whose green shimapan those are, though, as we’re only allowed to see the girls or the undies, never both at once.
Kotori's shimapan
From Date A Live
Earth in danger and this 14 year old can save it. But first Kotori must wake her brother with a flying leap that’s so fabulous that it deserves a slow motion pink shimapan shot.
Hinata's shimapan
From Mirai Nikki (The Future Diary)
When you’re reaching to shake a girl’s hand, no matter how clumsy you are, try not to grab her pants instead. And if you do end up with your hands on a girl’s pants in the middle of a school, for the love of all that is good, do not pull down. Poor Hinata must have thought wearing pants instead of a skirt would protect her shimapan from the world.
Komari's shimapan
From Little Busters!
Amidst a test of bravery, in the dark hallways of the abandoned schoolhouse, there lurks… the underwear peeker! Well, not exactly - but Yui definitely takes advantage of Komari’s easily spooked nature to make her pass out then take a peek. There’s nothing wrong with it because they’re both girls, right?
Fear's shimapan
From C3
When a naked girl shows up at your door, it’s common courtesy to help her cover up. The large shirt and striped undies fit Fear’s innocence perfectly. But wait, why does a single guy have panties just laying around?
Yuuki's shimapan
From Manga-ka to Assistant-san (The Comic Artist and His Assistants)
Of course, this list just wouldn’t be complete without the Endless Pantsu song from Manga-ka to Assistant-san, in which Yuuki laments his inability to touch and see that which is so close, yet so far away: the legendary shimapan.
Manga-ka to Assistant-san Endless Pantsu
Mio's shimapan
From K-On!
Nothing could be worse than tripping on stage during a performance and exposing your shimapan to an entire audience. Mio's clumsy moment may have been embarrassing, but it earned her a significantly larger fanbase. Not that we get to see what the audience saw - a closeup to what are obviously striped blue panties zooms out… to a striped blue bowl of rice. Aw, come on.
Honorable Mention: Miku Hatsune
She is of course not anime character but one of the most famous shimapan wearer actually as well as Mio Akiyama from K-On!.
