Juu Ou Sei

This is such an amazing anime. I watched it in half a day because of how good it was. It is short, but it definitely had a whole story that was spectacular. The characters were very well done and the story. The names were a bit symbolic, which made it understand the importance of the characters. I absolutely loved the music. The art was very interesting, especially the design of the planet.

Basically the story is of two boys who found their parents dead and were shipped off to a difficult planet in which plants are dominant with humans as pretty much just animals living around ... them. I love this one scene where the large plants grow out of the swamp and you see this beautiful landscape where there's these little water bowl plant things. Its so amazing with these ladder type design of plants. I wish I lived there, even if it meant dealing with the harsh winters.

Also, the ending is a really good one unlike most animes that leave you questioning.

A little known and in my opinion underappreciated anime, Jyu Oh Sei, while undeniably flawed, has quite a bit to offer for such a short ride. First of all it's only 11 episodes, so if you're even remotely intrigued by the premise I'd absolutely recommend banging this one out in a night or two. This deserves more recognition.

The first thing that stood out to me, and my overall biggest grievance with this anime, is the English voice acting, pre time skip, of our main character. Women providing the voice work of prepubescent male characters isn't anything new. In fact, it's been done for ages, and ... in many cases, such as Veronica Taylor voicing Ash Ketchum, it's done very well. That is not the case here. The voice we get here belongs to a preteen girl and doesn't remotely match the character. It felt so wrong and so out of place that I almost dropped the anime within the first two episodes. It was unbearable for me.

If you're able to stick it out, or if you simply watch with subs, which is probably what I should have done, there's a number of positives here. There is way, way, way more depth, complexity and world building here than I would ever expect from an 11 episode anime. You get A LOT of bang for your buck here, but there are many tradeoffs that have to be made in order for this to happen, including uneven pacing, a couple less than subtle exposition dumps and a rushed ending. Overall, with the amount of content here, this anime easily could have been, and in my opinion should have been, closer to the vicinity of 16 episodes. Had they been able to take their time a little more and had the luxury of showing us instead of telling us I think this could have been something special.

Unrelated to the overstuffed episodes, this anime makes a few peculiar choices that I don't quite understand. Many of the characters in this anime are randomly named after popular figures from Norse mythology. We've got Thor, Odin, Loki, Valkyrie and others. But, why? This is never explained, nor does it tie into the story. If the writer or director or whoever made this decision is a fan of Norse mythology, fine. I think it's fascinating too. But it's simply out of place and randomly thrown into this anime. Likewise, there's these random cuts, likely intended to be dramatic, where some dude (or woman, but whatever) starts wailing on the piano really loudly as the camera zooms into a character's face. Why? This did not generate any kind of emotional response for me. By and large it felt ineffective at best and simply distracting, unnecessary and not needing to be there at worst.

The overall concept of the plot is mostly original and unique. It borrows elements from other places, but as a whole I've never seen an anime overly similar to this one. The problems here are not with the concept- in fact, I think this anime had immense potential with its original concept and harsh but gorgeous world- and simply missed the mark with its execution. Like I said before, 11 episodes as opposed to 15 or 16 really did this anime a disservice on a number of levels.

The music was really mediocre and forgettable for me, which was further exacerbated by the aforementioned random out of place piano cuts. No accounting for personal taste, but I was pretty lukewarm on the intro and outro songs. The sound as a whole was mediocre, though some voice actors did a reasonable job. It's just hard to look beyond a main character with a blatantly unfitting voice.

The animation, keeping in mind that this anime came out in 2006, is actually quite good! It's fluid, never choppy and characters move, including in action sequences, in a realistic way. Likewise the character designs are quite varied and distinctive, though some did remind me to various extents of characters from other anime. The visuals couldn't pass for something that came out today, but they've aged well enough for something a decade and a half old.

Summing up Jyu Oh Sei, it's simply rough around the edges. The potential is there, the world building is definitely there and if it were just a little bit longer and paced a little better I can't helped but wonder what could have been. Still, even missing the mark a bit on the execution it does not miss it outright and there's enough here to make this anime at least decent and worth a watch. For an anime the vast majority of anime fans have probably never heard of, you could do a lot worse.

Don't get me wrong if you see the rating that I gave this Anime. I have been wanting to see this Anime for a while now. The synopsis that I read made me want to watch it, but I think it was to rushed. The first episodes are very slow moving, and not a lot of character building goes on in them. I don't discourage anyone from seeing it, the overall idea is a good one. At the end of the first episode I said that this would be better as a long movie then an series to a friend, and ... I still think that.

But in the end I would still tell people to watch it

This is a "must watch" even though some may dis-agree.Some may call the storline "jumbledor the art "old" but its set in a alternate reality and the future so u just have to use your imagination and it was writen ahile ago so plz just deal with it.However It was a stoy that stuck with me the las two years .it is the only series i ever bothered to see ... 3X each in japanese and english.it was a good find.a very touching story line that made you feal conected to it.it is one that i higly recomen to watch it,or at least give it a chance

Great story. It is very engaging, and grips the watcher. I personally enjoy survival themes in anime, and this anime accurately portrays the dilemma of being in a situation between life and death. It starts with Thor and his brother Rai, who are excited to an unknown planet for unknown reasons. Already it spikes my interest, but there are also several plot holes. (which I not name in order to avoid spoilers) However, as the plot unfolds, the story begins to get rushed, especially towards the last few episodes. I feel as though this 11 episode anime could have defiantly improved with 24 episodes. ...

Considering the time it came out, the animation is very good, but it is a bit choppy during some fight scenes. The sound is very good, and I enjoyed it even if it was not my preferred style.

Definitely my favourite aspect of the show. There is incredible character development throughout the show, however majority of it is lost in the time skip. The journey that Thor takes and how he improves as a leader and individual is very engaging, and I found myself very surprised at some points of the anime. Majority of the characters had a unique charisma and personality that seems to take the anime to life, however, some characters were very annoying and seemed dull.

I really enjoyed this anime. I finished it in less than a day, and rushed to get through episodes. The plot was very interesting, and the characters were engaging. I would defiantly recommend this to anyone who is interested in dystopian or survival themes.

Juy-Oh-Sei is an anime that belongs to a long lost time, where they decided to make anime about men, not about kids.

With only the span of 11 episodes, Jyu-Oh-Sei managed to tell the story of Thor Klein, whose parents got murdered and Thor himself got sent away to a distant planet where he and his brother struggled to survive every moments. What await for their fate is surely something beyond their wildest imagination.

Jyu-Oh-Sei is one anime where I found the world building is rather interesting. So is the cast. But it suffered a lot from the lack of time as mentioned above. With only 11 ... episode, the plot moves so fast that the director had to use every tricks up his sleeves to connect to story together, from scheming off-screen to timeskip and unexplained abilities... etc. And it is a shame because I do find Jyu-Oh-Sei captivating to watch, the characters would be so much more fleshed out and we might actually got to see more of their wonderful world if we had like 1 season more...

But on the other hand, what it did do right is the exciment. Jyu-Oh-Sei is never boring to watch. While it did lack some subtance and the ending is rushed to hell but I'm still quite fine with what i got.

Personally, I reckon that the anime's art hold up well even to today standard. The characters design is beautiful and served its purpose very well. It also have nice op and great soundtrack along the way.

Bones did so many good anime and tbh, I wanna put Jyu-Oh-Sei in that list too. But given the potential is wasted with such a short adaptation, I ranked Jyu-Oh-Sei below that a bit.

I understand that a lot of people really enjoyed Jyu Oh Sei; however my experience with the short anime was dreadful. It was a complicated story crammed into eleven episodes. The story covered a long amount of time and was unable to appropriately develop its characters or make their actions and thoughts believable.

The biggest problem I had with the show was the romance. It was unnecessary and unrealistic. There was no relationship--it felt like instant love and it was hard to wrap my head around.

The anime started off promising, but quickly degenerated. The relationships between the characters were cheesy, the pacing was confusing, ... and the story was convoluted and episodic. Had it been an episodic plot-line, it could have worked, but the story arc was simply choppy and off-putting.

I have no clue how did this anime appear on my planning to watch list, but, heck, I'm so glad it did!

As it always happens with the animes I fell in love with, I started with being extremely sceptical about Jyu Oh Sei. I'm not entirely sure why, probably there is an anime with a similar name, but I instantly thought it will be yaoi related. With my history of being an underage yaoi fangirl (guilty), it'd make sense, given the fact for how long I've had MAL account and how recently I've returned to anime. Long story short, I was not too eager ... to watch the series. However, this anime did something the most are incapable of - it caught my attention at the very first episode. From there on, I was hooked on the series, impatiently waiting for the next gym day just to see more of it. At first I was sure 11 episodes won't be even near to enough to cover the plot - I blame my bitter experience with the most of 13 eps long animes that carry rushed, half-arsed endings. But, to my pleasant surprise, the story was masterly put into those very few episodes, leaving me absolutely satisfied and fulfilled. The pace is, as it's to be expected, rather fast. However, it did not feel rushed to me - it gave an impression of it being just the way it should be. By episode 7, when the major changes in the characters occurred, I clapped my hand in excitement. To some it might have appeared too far-fetched, but I found this major change extremely yummy.

I'm usually highly peeved with the older style of drawing and, as vain as it may sound, genuinely enjoy the generic animation. I tend to stick to a belief that unique does not always mean good, hence why, despite great story lines and major enjoyment of the series, I was particularly annoyed with Revolutionary Girl Utena,Soul Eater, One Piece and others alike. Naturally, upon starting the anime, I frowned at how the characters were drawn, especially noting their noses. It reminded me of Princess Mononoke in a sense, but soon I was so engaged into a story I forgot about those little annoying things. As an anime artist myself, especially the one who's quite bad with the backgrounds, you can guess what I've appreciated the most. Yes, the details of the universe, which would vary from the wild, human eating jungle to space ship laboratories. Generally speaking, the art of Jyu Oh Sei is definitely not my cup of tea, but I was too busy with the admiration of the story to get irritated.

Now sound is what made me even happier. It's one of the openings I've downloaded straight away. I loved the energy in it, and it is now one of my favourite work out tracks. Thank you, Jyu Oh Sei! Usually I forget the openings quite easily, although I watch them all. Normally, I don't take much notice of the soundtracks, but with this anime I've actually did (because I knew I'm definitely reviewing it). They blended in just fine, and with all carrying a tribal theme, I believe soundtracks helped greatly to build the atmosphere. None of them are too loud nor too persistent, therefore serving as a great background - just what a soundtrack is meant to be. As for the ending, although I'm not a big fan of it, I can't complain either. The tune sounds more like an opening of some other, probably more female aimed series,but when you're taken back by all the strong points of the anime, you seriously can't complain about the ending, therefore I loved it, too.

Jyu Oh Sei is one of the animes that offers such clear and fast paced character development, you pretty much have it rubbed into your face. Especially by episode 7. The characters that seem like they don't develop are a trap. Their development is forcefully stopped by the creators of the series, just so they suddenly bloom and expose their true selves at the very end. It's similar to a trump card principle, to blow your mind with the brilliance completely. At least that's what happened to me. Very few and only completely minor characters were left with no actual development, but you can't be mad about that. In fact, it bugged me slightly why were they kept alive if they, unlike the others, lacked even interaction with the mains, but it was just a thought I had for a second. I'm actually very content with the characters in this anime. It is truly amazing how well their personalities and growth were exposed in a period of 11 episodes, without making it super rushed.

If you are still reading up to this point, you must very well have guessed I truly enjoyed this anime. So much, it's been re-watched on the same day of the completion, all in one ago. Also, I found myself fangirling over Sado, which is always a good thing. If I create a bond with a character, it means the anime is worthwhile. Usually, this phenomenon occurs with longer anime, thus it is the first time known to the history a character had charmed me in such short series. I liked the majority of plot twists, I liked the violence, I liked the tragedy, I liked the romance. Basically, this anime summed up all my favourite things in the series, offering a great blend. I would compare it to espresso - tiny, but strong and will keep you on your toes.

In conclusion, I will undoubtedly call it a masterpiece - not a word I use very often. Despite my scepticism, this anime had proven to be a real gem and totally justified its presence on my enormous planning to watch. Heck, I'm definitely grateful to myself for adding it to the said list as missing out on such great series would be a definite loss.

To keep it simple and to the point: It's been well over 10 years since I've watched this. But the reason I am writing this review is to give the person actually considering watching this show a chance to enjoy it as opposed to completely fall apart at the seems from what can only be described as "Teach the dog to read and write so he can finish it" 2nd act of a show.

Never have I been more insulted by any piece of media I've ever consumed than I have with this show. Stale, heavily clichéd , bewildering metaphors, characters and situations stabbed into ... the viewer like a knife left out on a literal poop deck to just fester and cake onto it all day in the roasting sun, with all the infections you would never imagine could happen to you all at once because someone just handed it to you while you were cutting food and said "here, the knife is good. Just was coated to be brown" then just proceeds to randomly stab you with it till you're chronically stuck in a hospital room for the rest of yours days.

That's what you get in the 2nd Act.

First act is interesting, fascinating, suspenseful. Just watch the 1st act before a certain someone grows up. TRUST ME on this.

Jyu Oh Sei hold's a special place in my heart. It's one of those anime that is largely ignored, meaning that most people aren't aware of it's existence. Probably because it isn't amazing, but hear me out on this point. I have always felt that this anime had major potential. One of the reasons why this anime is so unforgettable to me is because I have spent many nights in my bedroom staring at the ceiling and thinking of ways that this anime could have been a masterpiece.

The reason I think this anime COULD have been a masterpiece, is because I instinctively think of ... many ways that the plot could have gotten deeper, and how the world building and characters could have been profoundly expanded. It's just my imagination playing around, but I truly believe that this anime could have been expanded on and turned into a masterpiece. But first lets just recap the story real quick.

In this world, humans have created multiple planets that are pretty close to earth. And the population has boomed as humans have colonized space. One planet that they created, is like a prison. It's basically a planet where they send all criminals to and let them do whatever they want there. It's a very dangerous place, from the human eating environment to the humans themselves who are like savages.

This is one of the reasons why I believe this anime had so much potential. The plot itself is so interesting. A planet where the government sends prisoners to die. It says a lot about the government itself. And with some more depth and writing, it could have turned into a memorable tale of survival in a messed up part of the universe.

Also, not to mention that the soundtrack on this anime is on point. I still listen to the OST to this day. The OST itself is such great music, so atmospheric and haunting, maybe that's why it makes me so sentimental about this anime. The music really is freaking amazing.

The mangaka who originally created this work, i feel like is a very creative person. It's too bad that they didn't see a greater vision for this work, because I see it. I see that it could have been so much greater. It could have been one of those anime that anime fans would always recommend in forum threads for it's thrilling plot. It saddens me that it was wasted potential.

I'm not saying that this is a bad anime, in fact I enjoyed it, but I couldn't help but feel like there could have been more. It's really worth watching just to let your imagination flow a bit, because at only 11 episodes, it really leaves a lot to your imagination.

Jyu oh sei Anime Review

Jyu oh sei or in English planet of the beast king is an 11 episode anime released back in 2006. The studio handled the production are the hard hitter bones who have produced many shows ranging from Full Metal Alchemist/ Full Metal Alchemist Brother hood to Space Dandy. Bones is one of my personal favourite studios but that doesn’t mean that every work they put out is going to amaze me. Jyu oh sei is one of those shows which had an intriguing premise but it never lived up to its full potential.

Jyu oh sei is set in the distant star ... system of Balkan and follows the tragic tale of a boy named Thor. He and his twin brother Rai return home one day to find their parents dead, they are then kidnapped and sent to the Plant of Chimera, a jungle plant where plants rule and the only way to survive is to become a beast. The plot of this show isn’t bad per say just rushed. The show only has 11 episodes and in this short amount of time it covers a lot. To speed things up there is even a time skip at the end of episode 5. The main objective of Thor the main character is to become the beast king (basically the ultimate ruler of the planet) and get back to his old home and get revenge on those who killed his parents and sent his brother and him away to Chimera. Jyu oh sei is filled with tragedy and surprisingly politics. Even though the planet Chimera where most of the show is set is a chaotic world ruled by plants the people there follow laws and have multiple societies. The show does well to explain the laws of the planet and define the path that Thor must take to become beast king. When picking up the show it looked like a survival/action show and even though those genres are present they are definitely shadowed by tragedy and drama that Jyu oh sei produces.

Jyu oh sei also has taken inspiration from Norse Mythology, many of the characters names being from Norse mythology like Thor and Odin.

There are not that many characters to discuss. The main ones only really being Thor the protagonist, his best friend/ love interest Tiz, his sort of adult figure/guide Third, his brother Rei and a boy named Zagi. There are few side characters which fade in and out through the running of the shows but the names above are the ones to remember. Thor is your basic strong willed protagonist. Out of the main cast he is definitely the most likeable and his brother Rai being the exact opposite of him made him to me anyway the least likeable character. Thor’s goal is to get back to Juno his home and confront those who murdered his parents. At times his character can be a bit bland however as the time goes by he begins to grow and becomes a more rounded character. The biggest problem I have with his character is due to the direction of the show and its writing. Later on in the show another female character is introduced and he instantly falls in love with her and declares this after only knowing her for like 20 minutes and at the beginning of that episodel she hated him. His voice actors did a good job both in the dub and sub but I wouldn’t say that dub is amazing but it is good enough to watch. Tiz and Third are Thor’s left and right hands, they help him through his journey to the top and provide a good contrast of characters.

The soundtrack to the show was pretty under par, I can’t recall any piece of the soundtrack that stood out to me whilst even watching the show. The opening wasn’t to my taste and I feel that it doesn’t really fit the show and what it was going for. The ending however I thought was quite good and the only piece of music from the show that I have went back and listened too.

Bones usual shows have stellar animation however not every show can have jaw dropping awesome animation however I felt that the show wasn’t the best animation wise and this was definitely seen in the short and few fight scenes. Compared to other anime from 2006 it definitely wasn’t this best however I have seen worse and isn’t so bad that it ruins the show, if it was better I just think the show would have stuck out a little bit more.

Now the plot to me was ok but I did have a few problems with it, for one it was really rushed. By the end of episode 5 we had a 4 year time skip. The main gripe I have with this show is how much more developed it could have been if had been given more time and more episodes. The ending of the show I felt was also rushed and they could have done with a 12 episode to wrap it up a little bit more neatly.

Overall Jyu oh sei is an anime which I thought would be a survival/action which turned out to be more of dramatic/political/tragedy. Jyu oh sei went in a direction I never thought it would and for what it did I applaud it. Even though it feels rushed in some places especially the time scaling after episode 5 and the ending, I would still say that if you want to watch something that is quick and is filled with tragedy and drama then go ahead just don’t go in thinking it’s going to blow your mind because it won’t. It may sound like I am hating on the show, but I’m not it just didn’t stick out. Jyu oh sei is licensed by Funimation and Manga Entertainment and can be bought in DVD with both sub and dub. I absolutely loved Jyu-Oh-Sei! I just wished that the anime wasn't so rushed. So many things would go on during the course of one episode so there was a lot of information coming at you way too fast. But overall, the anime was extremely enjoyable to watch. I seriously haven't enjoyed an anime this much in a long time. Just watch it!

Jyu- Oh-Sei was overall a pretty good anime! I really loved the plot, the way the characters changed and developed throughout the episodes made the anime more interesting to watch. Because so many vital events happened, I found myself having to stop and rewatch parts so i fully understood what was happening. Anyways, i recommend this anime to those who like thrilling, adventure, futuristic, and somewhat romantic type of shows.

⊥ ⊥ ⊥ ⊥ ⊥ I added “Jyu Oh Sei” to my list after my sister reviewed it, but she warned me that the ending made no sense and neither did the “shoujo” tag. That was back when I was adding anime to my list willy-nilly, and I’m not as picky about anime as she is, so I thought it’d be alright. Looking back, I experienced a variety of emotions while watching this 11-episode show, though not all were great.

⊥ ⊥ ⊥ ⊥ ⊥ I can’t really explain that well why it took me about two months to watch “Jyu Oh Sei.” There were a ... lot of things factored into that time period… I was watching another TV show (that wasn’t anime), lots of movies, and was preoccupied playing Pokemon, I think. A measly 11 episodes is something a real person could finish in a week. I suppose then I’d have to say that “Jyu Oh Sei really couldn’t capture my attention that well. It wasn’t that it was boring. There was enough content to get me wondering about the plot, but the plot was too strange.

Setting aside the “Lord of the Flies” feel to it, the mystery of the brothers Thor and Rai appearing on the planet of Chimaera is kept a mystery until the very end. All viewers know from the beginning is that their parents were assassinated for some political reason and the twin sons were shipped to some crazy plant-infested planet way out yonder. Oh, and add the bombshell that this planet is used to house dangerous criminals from other planets, great.

What’s interesting, though, is how these abandoned humans have survived. They have a whole hierarchy and factions based on skin color and gender. As females are not as common as males, they’re more valued and less likely to be killed by others. Food and water are scarce and seasons are harsh. Everyone must always be on the lookout to make sure they’re not killed by voracious and carnivorous plants.

Then again, not enough of it is explained. Where do they get the materials for their huge buildings? Why the freak do some of them have air motor bikes? What kinds of crimes do people have to commit in order to be sent to Chimaera?

Anyway, the rising action has to do with Thor’s rise to power as he fights his way up the ladder to be come Jyu Oh. Once he learns that becoming Jyu Oh allows him to return to his home planet, he will not stop at anything, even killing others, to get to the top. For a large portion of the story, though, what drives it is the characters. They each have their own agenda and motives, some of them more sinister than others. You never really know who is on Thor’s side or not until later on.

⊥ ⊥ ⊥ ⊥ ⊥ Thor himself is an interesting character. Aside from the fact that his physical characteristics are unique, as many like to comment, he’s the polar opposite of his brother. He’s got a good head on his shoulders, is a quick thinker, and is physically fit enough to protect himself very well even in the unfamiliar and harsh environment of Chimaera. He might slip up here and there but he’s never far from the goal.

Third and Zagi are the prime mystery dudes here. I never trusted Third from the beginning because he seemed to be hiding stuff about himself at the start. Zagi doesn’t have much of a presence until halfway through the series, but he plays some evil guy so there’s that. Anyway, both are hot and that’s already suspicious enough, but gives a lot of development when they unveil their true personalities and incentives.

Ah, and poor Tiz. She appeared at the beginning as someone interested in Thor’s heart but was never able to obtain it because of that sisterly love Thor had for her. It’s the show’s little effort at unrequited romance which I find is actually better than their attempt at forming some real romance later on.

⊥ ⊥ ⊥ ⊥ ⊥ Can’t comment too much on the animation and artwork as it’s dated, but I think back then it wasn’t bad. It’s a little strange how different Thor looks after that five-year time skip, but puberty hit him like a train and he also turned hot, so I must comment that artwork-wise, it’s still appealing to me nine years after its release.

The saving grace of this anime is probably its soundtrack. I wouldn’t say that it’s something that took my breath away all the time, but a few pieces were definitely worthy of keeping on my playlist. There are some really pretty electric cello solos that really create the mood of mystery and dramatization in such a careful manner. They allow you to take the anime more seriously albeit the plot holes.

I’m not a huge fan of the OP because of the funky sax downbeats, but my sister really enjoyed it. The ED is better, in my opinion, as it verges between a casual and upbeat tone and leaves a hopeful vibe afterward, perfect for someone who needs some encouragement after seeing how hard it is living on Chimaera.

⊥ ⊥ ⊥ ⊥ ⊥ I have to say that “Jyu Oh Sei” is definitely not something I’d recommend to anyone. It isn’t the worst anime out there, but the ending comes with huge plot twists and tons of information that isn’t well explained. As a casual anime it might be okay, but if you prefer watching something thrilling or that actually makes sense, you’d be better off watching something else. The perk is that it’s only eleven episodes, but if it were longer then it would make more sense. The beginning makes it seem like it could be worth watching, but it goes downhill pretty fast near the end, so it’s disappointing in that regard. Nowadays there are lots more survival anime out there that can do a better job. (And I still don’t know why this is labeled “shoujo,” as I can see nothing in it that seems aimed toward young girls.)

This was an interesting anime. It started off as a standard survival anime but became more complex by the time it was done. While it kept my attention and was generally enjoyable, it felt rushed and was overall, a bit disappointing.


What I liked:

1. It was suspenseful and kept my attention.
2. It kept me guessing as to who could be trusted.
3. I liked most of the characters.

What I didn’t like:

1. Thor’s supposed ages. It didn’t fit with his appearance, his voice, or his behavior. Thor could have started out as a 14yo and progressed to a 19yo and still have been young to be a leader.

2. Thor’s fight scenes. It made no sense for him to win the fights he did other than that it was convenient to the plot that he do so. He had no combat training and was going up against people who’d fought a lot.

3. There were a lot of convenient plot devices that could have been better disguised.

4. Thor falling in forever love with the first pretty woman he sees within a few hours of meeting her.

5. The ending was rushed and had a lot of huge holes. There wasn’t enough time to process all of the information and changes thrown at us. It also felt rather pointless, to be honest. Yes, he got his answers, but there was no real sense of justice meted out, and he lost more than he gained.


STORY: The story had a ton of potential. I think if it had been extended into a 24-episode series, it would have been better for it. There were technically enough clues to predict what was going to happen, and I did figure some of it out but not to its full extent. I would have liked my suspicions to have grown more slowly over time. I also would have like a more clear view of a certain character’s motivation to better understand why he did what he did. As it was, it seemed a poor motivation for such an elaborate and extended deception. The science behind Odin’s plan was … ridiculous. Perhaps if there had been more explanation and more evidence of both its possibility and its need, it would have been more believable. Really, the whole thing just fell flat and was confusing, disappointing, and needlessly tragic.

ART: Well, it was 2006. I’m not sure this would have gotten any awards even then. It really wasn’t great at all. The facial features were angular and blocky. I despised the noses. There was nothing special about the landscapes or textures. Overall, the art was pretty bad. The mixture of scifi, modern, and medieval cultures all into one was odd. Their dwellings and utensils were all medieval but they had modern assault rifles and futuristic air bikes. It was just … odd.

SOUND: Also, 2006, and again, I think bad even for then. It was more like a 90s anime in terms of sound, both music and effects.

CHARACTER: The only character that was truly interesting was Third and mostly because he was mysterious. None of them possessed any depth. I found Thor’s lack of true grief over Rai’s death disturbing. I found Thor to be impetuous and immature, which I guess was the only part of him that seemed the age they had him. His voice and appearance didn’t match his age at all but his behavior did. I found their obsession with having children understandable given the circumstances but disturbing for an 11yo girl to be talking about. Thor’s motivation to find out who killed his parents and why made sense. It’s the motivation of a lot of main characters, but somehow it just fell flat in this anime. It didn’t really have any punch. None of the characters were overly likable or endearing. I didn’t hate any of them but I didn’t get attached to any of them either.

ENJOYMENT: I watched the whole thing but sort of felt like I’d like those few hours back. I can’t really say that I recommend it. It’s not awful, but it’s not great. It had the potential to be great. It really did. But it wasn’t.

This is not a well known or very popular anime. While personally I don't like it, I think everyone should give this anime a chance because it has something to offer everyone. Here's what I thought.

I really like the story. It follows two young brothers, Thor and Rei, who are abandoned on a strange, dangerous planet called Chimaera. Here humans have reverted to a feral state in order to survive. They live in a world where women are in a huge minority, and so they seem to hold some kind of power because they are viewed as 'sacred', and able to chose their own mates. ... Not a bad plot really, its sounded interesting when I first tried it.

The artwork is really nice too. The world Thor and Rai are abandoned on is covered in strange and dangerous plants, the animation is cool to look at and the character designs are pretty nice too.

The characters, in my honest opinion are very cliche and flat. I really didn't like any of them, honestly. The main characters Thor and Rai are opposites of each other, Thor being more confident and determined and Rai being slower and more dependent on Rai. The main female lead, Tiz is kind of annoying, her main goal being marrying Thor. And then there's Third who is a cool, laid back character. He claims to have no real name, and I consider him to be the most likable character in the series.

There are quite a few plot twists, mysteries and suprises. The animation is smooth and shiny, but the characters kind of suck. But I don't think anyone should pass this anime over.

This anime was brilliant, even though this anime was only 12 episodes long, it was action packed, and the plot was done in a whole 12 episode, I my view I think the plot was quickly completed in 12 episodes, and left no room for longer episode number or another season. But the anime is enjoyable none the less, at times a few characters became confusing, as in their appearance changed and also the huge time gaps between episodes, but you'll catch up. I found myself emotionally attached to the characters, making this anime unmissable, with happy moments and sad moments, I would recommend this ... anime.

As anime watchers; we've often encountered words such as "wasted potential", and let me tell you, yes you, the one who's reading this, this anime is the very definition of WASTED POTENTIAL.

Story:
The story starts with twin brothers; Thor and Rai with Thor being the elder sibling and Rai being the younger. After coming home, they went to see the dead bodies of their parents and while lamenting their lost; they we're put on sleep and dropped in a plant planet called Chimaera.

The plot didn't have that much "interesting" vibe to it, but once you get to watch the first few episodes, that's when you'll know ... that it was becoming interesting to good.

But sadly, it was only good for the first part, after the major time skip, this show went suicidal.

Art:

The art for me was really decent. No complaints about it.

Sound:

I thought I'd never like the opening song but it grew on me, and after 3 episodes I've never skip it. But other than the opening, the voice acting was decent. nothing spectacular.

Character:

This part of the show has many negative things that writing it in this review would spoil you.

Let me just tell you this; Don't expect any psychological or moral shits taking place, if ever, you won't buy to it because everything is forced. Don't even get interested in a specific character, because they'll never be dived upon because they'll be disposed of ( Even the main character gets none, if ever, he turns 180 degress to the right, then he'll turn 180 degress to the left. )

Enjoyment:

The first few episodes were quite good, I mean 1-7, or before the timeskip ( even with super thick plot armor )

The second part of the show is a train-wreck. It was so bad that enjoying its badness became a thing.

Overall:

As I've stated at the beginning, this show is the epitome of WASTED POTENTIAL. It had many things in store, really. They could've expounded on the world, the rules, the characters, motivations, morals etc. But no, the rushed everything and compiled everything within a span of 11 episodes.

Do I recommend this? No. But if you're curious and want to have some laughs then do so.

I only give three ratings 1-5-10.

What to know before reading this review: I don't blame anyone for not noticing the horrible messages in this show. However, they *are* there. If you liked this series and aren't identifying with the gross morals I relate to this show, I'm not talking about you, promise! I'm just very pissed off at this series and I hope you can forgive me for my bluntness. Also, I will refer vaguely to one spoilerish event that happens in one of the first few episodes. Content warnings: I will discuss misogyny and eugenics.

TL;DR: Here are some quick keywords: Pro-eugenics, misogynist but lacking fanservice, pseudo-intellectual, timeskips, Ayn Rand ... novel in disguise.

Story: 2
Are you extremely misogynist? Do you believe Hitler was onto something when he was dabbling in eugenics? Then you and the author of this piece of garbage might have something in common! Even then, though, I would still not recommend you watch this series, because ignoring the gross core message of this series, it's just objectively poorly written. As other reviewers have already pointed out, the story is crammed into a few episodes. How did the screenwriters solve for this? One word: timeskips. Imagine you start watching a story: we are introduced to the main character who is thrown into an unknown world. We're being told that he's sort of competent, but he still has a lot to learn. We get our first scene where the stakes are getting high, but our MC overcomes the battle. However, he decides he needs to grow stronger if he ever wishes to obtain his goal. Cool! You're hyped, click the next episode, and then: SURPRISE, a timeskip! Apparently the anime decided that the most interesting part -namely the main character learning and developing into a hero- was not worth to show the audience. Instead, we skip straight to our MC all grown up and acting like a Gary Stu cardboard cutout. Any info he learned the last few years, we are informed of through infodumps. The story also features other flaws, like portraying complete racial segregation as a natural thing that shouldn't be questioned and several plot threads that lead nowhere -specifically one certain character dying a very anticlimactic death: they were there first, the next moment they were gone. Normally you'd think "oh, it's this old cheesy trope where this character is revealed to return and turned evil offscreen", but nope, apparently they actually died. That entire scene only existed to prove to us (?) that social Darwinism is valid.

Characters: 1
As I mentioned before, the main character starts out as mediocre, then becomes a straight up Gary Stu we don't feel any connection to because of a dumb timeskip. But, it doesn't end there! We also have two (!) somewhat 'important' female characters, both of which tie their entire self-worth to whether or not they can get babies with a strong man. I'm not even kidding, main girl who has a crush on MC must mention at least once in every conversation she has with him that she wants to make babies with him. But since the series goes for a serious vibe, we don't even get treated with the real fanservice. Jyu oh Sei: if you're going to be blatantly misogynist, then at least give us the hot sexy stuff as well. Alas, Jyu oh Sei as a story wishes to be pseudo-intellectual so there's no place for pandering that's *too* obvious.

Art: 5
The art is mediocre, I guess. It has some intriguing concepts here and there, but they never do anything interesting with it.

Sound: 5
It's been a while since I watched it, but I don't remember anything about the sound, so I assume that means it was quite forgettable. But I guess that's relatively impressive for this show. Well done Jyu oh Sei: you haven't offended me in the art and sound department. Too bad that won't influence my overall assessment.

Enjoyment: 1
Believe me, it takes quite some effort for me to get offended over my Asian cartoons. But I guess, Jyu oh Sei managed what no other show has managed before. It's the only series that has gotten the rating of '1' from me, out of all shows I've watched. It achieved this feat because not only was it objectively a very shitty series, it's also morally bankrupt.

I couldn't be bothered to watch the last few episodes, but according to wikipedia and a few other reviews here, it only gets worse after I dropped. I guess you may enjoy this shit if you either are in search of an eugenics-themed power-fantasy, or you want to hate-watch a show with friends and wanna see which of them punches their head through their screen first. A shame though, because on paper, a nature-themed battle royale style story sounds sort of interesting.
