Togainu no Chi

I like Togainu no Chi. I've played the game. I've read the different iterations of the manga. And now, I've watched the anime.

I really wish I hadn't.

[Story] [3/10]

The story was, well, a joke. A twisted, convoluted fusion of each different path from the game, yet at the same time not following any actual path at all!

My other gripe was the lack of BL. The game was BL. Aka, Boys Love. Yaoi. Etc. To remove it is like having Final Fantasy 7 without Cloud or Sephiroth. Like 'Tales of' games without Apple Gels. It just isn't right!

And to add insult to injury, they left Arbitro ... and his creepy shota perverseness in. Why? To make gay people look like creepy paedophiles?
Seems legit.

[Art] [3/10]

I've seen many comments on the art style. It's a bit of a 'love it' or 'hate it' thing.

Personally, the art style didn't bother me.

However, the static scenes with only moving faces, odd camera angles and panning shots, and the lack of any sort of dynamics or anything interesting in the fight scenes turned me right off. There were also scenes were they seemed to have gotten very lazy.

Nothing too offensive, thankfully. A different song each ED. I particularly liked 'Still' (which was from the original game) and 'Honed Moon', which was by the same artist.

The BGM was alright, but mostly forgettable.

[Character] [3/10]

Now, don't get me wrong. I love each and every one of the characters. But this rendition of them made them flat. Like cardboard cutouts. No development, barely any background at all. No depth whatsoever. Which is a real shame.

[Enjoyment] [4/10]

As someone who has played the game, read the manga, etc, I was able to somewhat enjoy this. However, those new to the series most likely will turn up their noses and walk away, and if I was a newcomer to Togainu no Chi, I would probably do that myself. (Go off and play the game more likely).

Overall, I'd say this is an anime 'For Fans'. Not that good for people who are looking for anything worthwhile to watch.

When I first heard about this anime I found it really interesting, because it is a new combination of different things;
Action, a huge amount of blood and a lot of pretty guys ( And like it is said in the discription even shonen-ai).
So, I don`t think that a lot of people would watch this series anyway.
Because for the male audience... well there are too many boys (and in fact only a single woman), and for the girls there is just too much ... blood and violince.
But I am one of the girls, who really love all this things, so I decided to give this anime a try.

And now after 12 episodes I am really disappointed.

Story 5/10:

In the beginning the story seems to be kind of interesting:

After the third world war, Japan is splited up in two different areas.
Toshima (Tokyo) is controled by a criminal organisation, called Vishio, who are holding a battle game known as Igura there. ( I wonder if this “Igura“ comes from the russian word for game: Igra)
And than we have a guy, who is arrested because of a crime (in which he isn`t even involved), and who have to win against the most strongest player in the Igura, if he wants get his freedom back.
So the story has got potential...but the producers failed.
In fact I think that they could put the whole story in 6 or 7 episodes, because there is really no need for more.
Some episodes wese so „empty“ that in the end, I couldn`t even tell something about the content, because there isn`t any.
Only in the last 3 or 4 episodes the whole anime became interesting and finally I have got the feeling, that something happens there and that it ins`t just about stupid dialogs (which are horrible in fact) an a lot of absurde violence.


Animation 6/10:

Nothing special at all.
Sometimes it was good, sometimes I just think: Holly shit what happend with the poor characters and backgrounds.
After all I have the feeling that the animation became better towards the end.
But what is really horrible...is the colour of the blood, I became every time so aggressive, when I see it.
Because it looks like some cheap acrylic colour, and not like blood at all.

Sound 6/10:

Well, the opening was really okay.
Also the whole endings, I suppose ( Altough I do not like so many different songs for a single anime)
The soundtracks couldn`t be good too nice, because even after 12 episodes I do not remeber a single one.

Characters 6/10:

Annoying, annoying and...yeah annoing.
It`s the same like the storyline.
They COULD be interesting.
They really Could.
But in the end they are just some pretty guys, who haven`t got any personality or depth.
They are just empty puppets, who are just acting like, the plot wants them to act, without any meaning behind it.
Only Kaisuke is discribed a little more, but his personality just going on my nerves, so I could not enjoy this.


This shonen-ai thing:

Where the hell is it?
Yeah I know the anime is based on a Yaoi game, but in anime there aren`t any scenes, which are near to this genre.
Yeah, you may say that Keisuke has a too depth connection to Akira, but I just think, that he has a kind of a complex.
So please, if somebody reads this and just does not want to watch this anime, because of this:
There is no shonen-ai, no boys love, no hints at all.


It is just a bloody anime with a lot of guys, a lot of fights and a lot of disguisting deaths.

So if you are a fan of all this things, you may like this anime.
If not, just forget about this series and search some new one.

Confusion-inducing. Aside from the fact that there are hardly any women in this show, there’s also that little problem of the viewer being thrown into a fictitious world that doesn’t even attempt to explain its existence, not to mention having to relate to characters whose ideas of a backstory come off as stale, contrived monologues. Technically, though, Togainu no Chi is wonderful, just something you’d expect out of A1 Pictures. Although the blood is a bit too lipstick-red – probably intended to stand out against the dark, shadow-filled environment – the EDs are amazing, and the camera angles bring out the best from the relatively ... realistic fight scenes. Possessing neither a strong plot nor remarkable characters, Togainu no Chi’s selling point is its close resemblance to a scripted but still exciting boxing match.

Before i write anything I just want to remind all the readers that I did not read the manga or play the game.

This anime shows 'friendship' NOT 'boy love' so i recommend it to everyone. (if you like slow anime that it)

The story...well, I kept of telling myself ''I'm sure there is more to the storyline'' while watching it ,but sadly I was wrong. I think that 12 episodes are just too long long for this anime as there wasn't much of plot at all.

BUT i must say they did a good job with the 'friendship' part. I enjoyed it a lot. Not all ... anime can pull off the importance of true friends. But i still don't understand the issue with this 'Shiki' (II Re) or Nano the military and the Nikko Group. They are still a mystery to me...

This anime showed drug (Line) which makes people stronger and stuff. And the main character, Akira's blood resists Line, and if his blood is mixed with line, it'll create poison. That's basically a little bit of the anime.

The story was lacking plot greatly. I watched the whole series completely but I still don't understand the story that well. Actually, its not me, the story was too 'weak' and a little boring i must say. Mainly because they did not explain anything completely. It felt like the team behind this anime gave up on it, and probably assumed it'll sell well since the game was popular *Note:: I was told the game was a success.

Art 5/10

The art was average but not up to my taste. If you enjoy animation with realistic art, you might enjoy this. The character design is suited for a game but I felt that they couldn't make it impactful in the series.

Sound 9/10

I really enjoyed the soundtracks of this anime. I really loved the opening! The OSTs was probably the thing that kept me from dropping this anime.

Well, it was okay more to bad. Anime had a lot if potential but it was a shame how it turned out. I really hope they would consider a remake that at least follows the original storyline a bit more closely.

I suggest that if you've played or read the manga then don't watch it? Because almost everyone is saying that this anime is bad and stuff BUT its all up to you!
Or don't have any expectations, because you may be disappointed.

Togainu no Chi is an anime that had a lot of potential, but... ultimately failed. There was one thing I liked, which was the characters. But, in order to love an anime truly, you must like both the characters AND the story. The story was... honestly, barely there, with a disappointing ending. The game is apparently quiet popular, which is sad, since the anime turned out so horrid. The plot was great, but they didn't use it for the great-ness it could have been. The art style was good, though. Although, I did enjoy the theme music, but something about the ending themes always felt ... too long. Anyways, Togainu no Chi is a good anime, but only if you are able to enjoy an anime just for it's characters, and not for it's plot. Thanks for reading!

This anime has the premise of fighting, blood, and potential Shounen-Ai. Now the blood and the fighting we get and the BL, the main reason why many girls watched this-none at all.

the story is about Akira getting convicted for a crime he didn't do, and he has to go play Igura, a fighting game where a person has to collect dog-tags to beat the "last boss," Il Rey. The BL element, as i have said, is almost non-existent, The most one might hope for is Akira and Keisuke's relation to hopefully blossem of Rin and someone to get it on

It was ok, however, half ... the time i felt like i was watching a black screen. Sure, i heard the clanging of knives, or someone hitting up against a wall, but i saw only a black screen while they fought. I don't know if it was because of my computer, but looking at a black screen during a fight. It also ddn't help that the art was dark to begin with. (A little note:Rin was the best drawn character :))

The characters had no depth to me. They were as flat as flat can be, and I felt absolutely no connection to them at all.

Ok, between the almost non-existent story and the black screen moments, i can't say i enjoyed it. Its just one of these bad animes that you can't help but to watch and hopes that it would get better.

This is my first review: Togainu no Chi is based off of Nitro+Chiral's first BL game. Me, a BL fan and who is currently playing their newest game DRAMAtical Murder, I feel like they could have done a better job with this show.
Yes, they did create this anime based off from the game because of their 5th year anniversary but I feel like the story could have been better.

Story(I'm not going to spoil it too much):
Akira is accused for a crime he didn't do and is forced to participate in a dreadful game and in order to survive, he must face off with the boss ... "I re"(did I spell that right?)
Okay, it was a good thing that they had the main point on the road.

Art:
I actually enjoyed the art style. It had a dark scenery and that's what I'm interested in. What also made me wonder was why the blood was a extremely bright red. When there was a dark scene (night and rainy), the blood was still extremely bright red.

Sound:
The anime had a decent soundtrack, not the best but cool. Each episode ended with a different ending. I didn't really focus on the endings but I was very into their 12th ending "Still" because it was used in the original BL game.

Character:
It's a but difficult to explain about the characters but I feel like they all have the same attitude in the game. Akira is a character that doesn't show his feelings to other people. Shiki is a character that we don't know much about in the beginning. Keisuke, Akira's friend is a friend who always want to be on Akira's side and Rin, is a character who has a mysterious past. I remember these characters had the same attitude when I was playing the game so I'm glad that they didn't change their appearance.

Enjoyment:
Though I wish they could have done a better job, it was alright. I'm glad that their is now an anime based off from one of my favorite BL games but I don't think I'll ever watch it again unless I'm really bored one night.

Overall, I'll give this show a 6. If Nitro+Chiral were to ever make another anime based of their game again, I just hope that it based off from the actual game plot and scenes.

I liked it. It had potential, but it failed to adequately flesh out the characters/character-relationships & story.
It just didn't flow & explain the backstory well enough for those of us who haven't read the manga, novel or visual novel. Which made some parts a bit confusing.

Also, what happened to the bl? There was nothing boys-love about this anime, which was disappointing. I mean, I didn't expect explicit, but there wasn't even a hint bl, not even implied, it was more bromance if anything.


Still, I liked it, it was average. I certainly didn't dislike it, I just think it had potential to do much more. ... Maybe if I read the manga/novel & play the visual novel it will make more sense.

Togainu no Chi is an enjoyable anime for those who like anime with hot guys angsting and fighting each other.

In a dystopian future, the city of Toshima forms the setting of a bloody battle royale. Fighters are drawn by the prize money or just coerced into competing. You win by collecting a good poker hand of card dogtags each fighter wears, then fighting the ultimate boss. Meanwhile, there’s a massive conspiracy involving a mysterious street drug called Line.

The anime is pretty heavy on innuendo between the male characters (let’s be honest, there’s only one female character in the cast). I’d call this basically badass versions ... of the guys from Gakuen Heaven if they were plopped into the dark, corrupt world of Deadman Wonderland. So that’s right up my alley, and it really worked for me. The chemistry between some of the characters is just off the charts; for example, I liked Shiki/Akira—or really any of the other characters with Akira.

But there were also lots of problems with this anime, such as the lack of backstory or character depth (which does improve later on), the strange camera work during battle scenes, Nano’s stupid, falsely-dire opening voiceovers about color, and the fact that only the depraved antagonists seem to be actually out of the closet. Also, a warning to the squeamish, because there is a lot of blood in this one. Whenever any character gets so much as pricked by a needle, literally a rivulet of bright red blood spurts everywhere. And the “dog”/pet character is one of the most disturbing things ever. Still, those things didn’t hinder my overall enjoyment.

Small spoiler! This anime is definitely....different. That's really the best way to describe it. I really wanted to write a review for this one even though I don't do it often because I just wanted to elaborate on all the what dafuqery that is going on.

Story 5/10
First of all the story is pretty simple and easy to follow until it decides to take a left turn out of no where every 2 episode. Once you think you know whats happening it completely changes directions on you with hardly any explanation at all. Though I have to admit that while in the ... beginning I strongly felt like dropping the anime about half way through I felt myself being pulled along constantly wanting to know what was going to happen next but I think that was only because my brain was so lost that I wanted to constantly have my questions answered even though they weren't and though it's very cynical all the craziness made for a good laugh. The pacing feels a little off it was like it had its best 2 episodes and then immediately its worst. The final two to three episode feel very slow and drawn out and extremely repetitive.

Characters 3/10
The relationships and character development are not particularly all that great in fact I found at one point that the characters actually began to fall off a little bit. Not fully coming to expectations. Also the relationships feel extremely forced. While I am a huge fan of the shounen-ai genre in general I felt through out much of this anime that the idea of it was being shoved down my throat without very much see. What I mean is that the anime would make a point to express that the characters were intimate without giving us anything to show for it. And not just the main characters either, the supporting characters where like that as well. Also pretty much everyone in the anime ended up being gay and if you weren't gay before you certainly were as soon as you took drugs. I mean seriously there is a point in this anime where the characters decide oh I'm crazy on drugs so now all of a sudden I'm going to become a gay pervert who is going to molest the main character......WHAT?!?! Not even joking.

Art 6/10
The art in this anime certainly throws you through a loop sometime it can be absolutely stunning and others its simply mediocre at best, particularly between transitions or fast paced scenes, it just never feels very fluent. Also the censoring is very whacky sometimes it feels like they forgot they were supposed to be doing it and was just like oh crap lets throw some in here to make up for it.

Music 7/10
The music is okay nothing very exciting although I do like it when the executioners would come on scene. The ending song is constantly changing which is different and fun but overall most of the songs were not anything too spectacular. It does however always seem to follow the ambiance of the show so that's a plus.

Enjoyment 7/10
I do have to say that I surprisingly had fun watching this anime constantly trying to keep up with all the twists and turns. How ever I am not sure I would recommend it especially not to anyone looking within the shounen-ai genre because it truly is a poor representation of how fantastic it can be. A lot of animes in this genre for what ever reason like to make it seem like all gay people are complete cray-cray perverts and this anime is no exception in fact I would say it almost takes it to a whole new level.

I also feel like it did not live up to the expectations brought forth via the game though that is not hard to believe since that is a continuous problem with projects like these. If you have a few hours to waste and you want something strange to watch with not very high expectations go for it, if you're cynical like me you might even get a good laugh from it, otherwise I would suggest something else. However if you do watch do everyone the favor and don't take it seriously AT ALL. :)
