Fate/stay night Movie: Unlimited Blade Works

Fate/stay night: Unlimited Blade Works its probably one of the best anime movies that i have ever seen. In my case, Im not a fan of Fate/stay night but the movie its something that it would be good to watch after people ends to watch the anime to get the story.

As the story its another way to tell you how the anime was , changes a lot of stuffs. The story its mainly concentrated in Shirou and Archer, they both have an important role in this movie. For those that didnt watched the anime, will be hard to understand at the begining.

The art ... is something that you can really notice very well comparing the anime, and not only even in the anime, even in most of them. Fights, situations when characters talks or stages its something that is not normal to see on an anime.
Makes you want to take pics in most of that part of it.

Sound 10/10

As Fate/stay night: Ultimated Blade Works its an anime of action, its important the sounds of the fights. At the time of the fights, every single move its able to
hear it very clearful adding really good sound effects at important parts of them.

Characters 9/10

Like the movie its another way to say how the anime was, wont be a big difference of characters, but will be in the roles that they play. The main charactes of the movie are Archer and Shirou, of course Shirou is the main guy of the anime, but in the movie takes a more important role and with Archer will show a big difference in his way to be. Others characters, for example, that were the mains in the anime, wont take an important role at all.

For those who are fans of Fate/stay night , really deservs to watch this movie, most of them (in my opinion) will enjoy it a lot. For those who didnt watch the anime but know at least of what it is about (the anime) , will like and will make them watch the anime, but for those that dont have any idea of what its about, maybe will be a bit hard to understand the concepts of the meanings of the movie and cause of that maybe the wont enjoy it at all.

Fate stay/night: Unlimited Blade Works its a movie that most of the people have to watch . Although, amazed me that its way more bloody that there is a point that you think ''From where it comes all that blood? '' and a bit sadic than the anime. I have to say, that i recommend this movie, deservs to be watch

for fans who have read the fate/stay night visual novel, this movie would be very disappointing (except for one part)

basically the story is rushed through, no surprises there as it is a movie, and the visual novel has too much to cover, but to name the movie "unlimited blades work" would be to put into focus the main point of it from the visual novel, which is, emiya shirou's convictions and archer's convictions.

as someone who has read the novel, i can say that nothing is very well explained, even the things that MAKES the movie.they should have shown more "dreams" of archer on top of ... the hill of dead bodies, and have emiya shirou monologuing what he sees, describing the true nature of that scene.

i found the revealing part, where archer revealed he is emiya shirou to be underwhelming (of course i already knew, but even after that fact, i still found it unimpressive due to the lack of buildup)

yet the biggest problem i have with this film..is the chant. they show it at the opening needlessly, and never once in the movie has the full thing been said (it has been shown yes, but i feel emiya shirou saying his chant would have been alot more epic)

but, if there is one thing i love about this movie, it's emiya vs archer..the soundtrack by kenji kawai was amazing, all throughout the scene, i was completely engulfed.
the perfect movements, the conflict of ideals, and of course, the music made that scene the best moment of the movie (though this is just my opinion)

and now, emiya shirou vs gilgamesh.

first of all, when shirou declared he will take care of gilgamesh instead of saber in the novel, everyone was surprised, the thought was absolutely ridiculous, and the reaction of both saber and gilgamesh reflected that (and it was a great buildup to the epicness that lied ahead)

i have nothing against the soundtrack played during the fight, but playing "emiya" again would have been epic. that theme was also played during the novel while shirou was fighting
gilgamesh, and it was awesome.

i have already stated i did not like the chant, so i'm going to talk about the fight itself.
of course, shirou said the line everyone was waiting for, "do you have enough weapons in stocks, king of heroes?" but during the fight, we see emiya shirou using the same weapon over and over, just like gilgamesh. the point of "unlimited blades work" was to count gates of babylon, countering a limitless number of weapons with another endless supply of weapons.
in the novel, gilgamesh constantly changed weapon, and emiya shirou constantly took the same weapon to match him, that was the essence of this battle.

the story wasn't well told, but that is to be expected since the movie had a time constraint.
the art was amazing, everything was extremely detailed, i especially love the reality marble "unlimited blades work"

the soundtrack was also nice, my favorite being the theme "unlimited blades work" (not to be confused with emiya, and kenji kawai's emiya

i can't say much about the characters, if you read the novel, you know them, and i did not find anything i had a problem with. i think they managed to flesh out the characters enough for us to know their mindset

enjoyment? there wasn't a lot to be intrigued by, until archer vs emiya, and just for that scene, i can say i will rewatch the movie again and again

overall, i'd give it an 8, though i wish i could give it a 10

It was really good honestly, some parts were changed from the visual novel, even Emiya Shirou's incantation and Rin's, the epilogue was rushed like some parts too.

The only reason why I would tell you not to watch it would be if you didn't watch the Anime or play the game because they skipped the obvious parts that happened "in between" so you would be confused by the sudden time jump in some situations. But if you are curious about then just forgive those parts because they were meant for viewers who already watched the Anime and/or played the game.

Story:

The story was a very good translation ... from the Visual Novel given the time they had, even tho there is time skip you can really get into some parts of it. But since they had such a short time they couldn't naturally represent it at its best so my score is 8/10

Art:

As expected Art was very good for me, they did indeed give their best to make it as high quality as possible and depict the scenes as best as they can, I have no complaints about that so my score is 10/10

Sound:

I find that the music is really fitting for every scene and if there was no sound then it fitted it too. About the sound in general I have no complaints because I didn't find any irregularities with the synchronization or similar. My score is 10/10

Character:

It was all about Emiya Shirou and Tohsaka Rin so that part was clear while you watch it but as for both they didn't really have the time since they are tightly connected to the story, some parts were hard to understand about em too without concentrating on it. The most important character here was Emiya Shirou, he was shown very good but not in the best way because of the rushing, some parts were skipped too about him making it unable to show him 100% but it got very close to it despite of that. My score for Characters is 8/10 because they couldn't depict Emiya Shirou, the main character, that well and it is a merciful score from my side.

Enjoyment:

I honestly enjoyed it very much because I knew what each scene was since I played the game and watched the Anime but the time skip was a let down on the expectation I had. But of course, it couldn't be helped give the time an Anime movie must have. My score is 8/10 because although the Anime was fast paced you could get into it and really enjoy it making it worthwhile to watch.

Overall:

In the end it was a really good movie although a bit hard to understand at some parts because of the time skip but that shouldn't stop you from enjoying it. I definitely recommend everyone to watch it once, it is indeed really good and the best they could do with 1h and 45min, really well put together. My score is 9/10 because it is a really great story and they did the best you can do with what they had on hand, the only reason it wasn't a 10 was because they couldn't depict Emiya Shirou very good as a Character and rushed the story.

I must say that I had mixed emotions about this movie. I didn't like original anime much and I never played the game. What I didn't like in season one was mostly Shirou who pissed the hell out of me with his stupidity and the whole Saber/Shirou romance. Not that it was bad but I think that there was too much attention on it.

And yeh, Saber obessed Gilgamesh also was not my thing. Iactually dislike stories where everyone are after one person and where main character is basicly unbittable.

But here comes the movie with alternative story and I have several things to say about it.

Despite ... not liking anime much, this movie would look bad without watching anime first... or playing the game.

Major minus of the movie is that it had rushed a lot of things especially at the begining. One moment we have Shinji and Rider meeting Shirou and Rin in the forest and then suddenly we see them all at school fighting some random skeletons. It's like if they had skiped several days there. If not the anime, I would have been lost even more while watching the movie.

Another minus just for me was the fact that my favorite servant got almost instantly killed without any background or actually doing anything.

Those things made me want give movie lower mark. However, the upcoming pluses made up for it.

1. The movie has great quality animation as well as fantastic action scenes.
2. I enjoyed this story version much more. Shirou didn't piss me off even once here, though his ideals still seem to be the same.
3. It isn't all about Saber and her romance with Shirou. The romance is kept to minimum, actualy I would call it more on friendship stage, so it doesn't get in the way of actual story. Things are progressing and other characters managed to get more background and screentime.
4. More characters got their deserved screentime.
5. We are able to understand Archer much better since he mainly is the lead character here. He seriously lacked in attention in anime series.
6. Despite still being one of the strongest servants, Saber doesn't look like unbittable main character anymore. She actually looks on even ground with everyone else what makes fighting and her characte more enjoyable.
7. Gilgamesh is not Saber obessed and has new looks.

You might dissagree with some of the pluses, but I'm sure that you will agree on majority. And to those who love Saber and her romance with Shirou, don't get depressed. Saber still had some cool moments and they did have several moments.

If not the cut out scenes, the movie would be perfect. I hope that if studio will decide to animate other routes, they will create a series version but this time with 12 episodes. Because old anime version was too dragged while movie was too short. 12 episodes should be a good alternative, or maybe 4-6 OVAs.

Note 2: Ill add, the one thing i liked is this is a lot more gory than the other fate works, showcasing the brutality of the battle.

This is a great watch for those who're already a tad familiar with Fate/Stay Night. As a standalone it's a bit lacking in context, but either way it'll still be a good watch. It's a simplified version of a much longer story, but it's pretty tastefully done and the directing is fantastic. The dialogue is also noticeably better then the TV counterpart (which was extremely hit-or-miss at times), while still certainly being cheesy. But Fate/Stay Night is mostly dumb fun with maybe a bit of emotional investment for some. It's not exactly the most intense of Battle Royale story-lines, but you gotta give Kenji Kawaii ... (the man behind the music) heavy credits for giving the Deen series a truly unique feel for the Fate universe that was never again matched. While other Fate stories may be more in-depth with plot and characters, I think this movie has the best overall package for those Fate vibes. It's a shame they didn't make a whole anime of this quality back then. And I should note I watched this way back when it was a thing, just gave it a rewatch and still like it (while TV counterpart not so much).

If you're going to step into the Fate universe with this though, definitely watch the first 3 episodes of the original Fate/Stay Night anime first. They brush over that part in particular which hurts it a bit.

I will write this as a non-gamer person, and someone who never played (nor will play) this game, so this comes from a no gamer anime fan.

Being such I need to say that this anime was confuse and too rushed, and lucky me I saw the first series and talked with friends who played the game, so I could enjoy some of the show, but being aware that studios should be more attentive to viewers who might not be interested in games but would watch a given show by its quality, story and artwise.

Artwise it was really good and you can enjoy it if only ... by it, but again be warned, if you never heard of the story, never played the game nor talked with someone who played it, nor saw the first adaptation, you will be at a loss on many parts, and you will feel the story rushed and with many gaps.

Fans may flame me for saying these words but will not be able to say I am wrong on this.

One thing is good though, Rin got better attention, which is good.

After reading the reviews I still couldnt find anything absolutely wrong with this movie. People complained that it was too reliant on the anime and game but it is a movie based on it so what else can you expect.

STORY:
The concept was really interesting. This movie was mainly centered around Archer and could be told also by the title of it "Unlimited blades work", which is Archer's power. People complained that there isnt much explanation but its a movie, they cant break down everything like an anime because it would be boring and a waste of time. The movie had great action scenes and the ... twist was great. I loved how it sums up the anime and really shows Archer's true power. This movie honestly wouldnt make sense and need explanations for people who NEVER seen the anime, played the game, or etc.

ENJOYMENT:
Off the bat, I put an 8 because the fights and deaths were pretty awesome and the animation was just fantastic. The powers some characters had was just epic and was shown amazingly. The beginning was cool but after that part might have been a bit boring but it hints off something important about the main character, Shiro, especially when it shows him fixing stuff( I cant really go into detail because that would just spoil it for those who knows nothing about fate/stay night.)

ART:
The art style was good and the animation was amazing.

CHARACTERS:
I really liked how each character was different and cool in their own way. Rin didnt stand out much in this movie but she honestly isnt that important in this (this is mainly about archer, and shiro). The servants were cool(im not sure how else to describe them) but certain ones of them stood out more and had super cool powers(especially the guy in the yellow, i forgot his name).

I honestly dont get the super negative reviews about this but overall its pretty good.

Edit: I've changed to a different way of working out the overall rating I give anime now, as I think it works better than just my hype from the moment of watching an anime.

As a sort of disclaimer I'm going to say this: At the time of watching this movie, all my knowledge of the Fate/ Universe is comprised of Fate/EXTRA (which I recently started playing and have yet to finish) and Fate/Stay Night (The 2006 Anime), as well as the fact that I am aware Fate/Stay Night (The Visual Novel) is split into three routes Fate, Unlimited Blade Works and Heaven's Feel. Additionally for ... this review until my conclusion I will pretend that Fate/Stay Night (The 2006 Anime) does not exist until I after my conclusion.

Ok so now to talk about this. I highly recommend that if you're not able to play the Fate/Stay Night Visual Novel, then go watch the 2006 adaptation of Fate/Stay Night Visual Novel's Fate route before watching this. Also it is to be noted the only reason this got a lower rating is due to the fact I believe this movie requires to have either played the Fate/Stay Night Visual Novel or watch the 2006 adaptation of the Fate route, this is primarily due to the fact that Unlimited Blade Works is a a parallel timeline that happens alongside the Fate route and as such it required to have been approached from the same point as the 2006 adaptation, so people without prior knowledge could fully understand all the points in the film.

They should've restructured the show for the movie instead they made a summary of the show with minor changes.

Animation and fighting are fun to watch. Other than that there is nothing special here.
The TV show is far better than this.

It's only for people who are familiar with every character. It lacks character development and there is no storytelling or narrative. It feels like a compilation of random events.

It does not feel like a movie at all. nobody should watch this at the cinema because this thing has nothing to do with the cinema.

This movie is a mess whether you've seen the original series or not. It starts out rushing to introduce multiple characters with fight after without any context. Each fight has many dramatic twists and turns but as an audience you're left wondering who you want to win or why the fight is happening anyway. Even the overall story has no history to tell you why anyone is fighting for the holy grail, which turns out to be an odd pile of goo. The only real positives are the general character designs and the slightly greater focus on Rin, who I always thought was more interesting ... than Shiro. Don't waste your time or money on this.

Initially I wanted to review Fate/stay night: Unlimited Blade Works disregarding the visual novel it was based on. But that is not wise, because Deen made an adaptation targeted at the fans of the original. If you haven’t read the novel, you probably won’t understand half of the things on screen. So in my review I’m assuming that you’re familiar with the source as I’ll keep in touch with it. Just be warned.

Fate is probably the most successful franchise created by Type-Moon, Japanese game company, and its author Nasu Kinoko-shi. For most people Fate/stay night anime acted as introduction to bizarre magical realm of Nasuverse, ... the world of Nasu-shi’s writings, and it laid the foundation of Type-Moon’s international fame as well as other works by Nasu-shi became widely known beyond Japan. Thereby the UBW film was highly awaited here.

Personally I think that UBW is the best route of the original novel. It has strong plot, which deals with the mystery of Archer’s identity and contains nice turnarounds and memorable scenes. The first route, Fate, which became the basis for TV series, was predictable and pretty much boring, and Heaven’s Feel, while having some advantages, was just… twisted, so having film based solely on UBW is surely tasty.

The characters, being the same old guys from Fate, are shown from other angles, which is interesting for some of them. The core cast of UBW consists of three characters. Emiya Shirō, the protagonist, whose wish to protect the weak is balancing on the edge of dementia, actually has to do something with it here. He directly faces the consequences of his behaviour and has to fight to protect his ideals. In UBW Emiya is still not as reasonable and level-headed as in HF, but more interesting character, then in Fate. The second one is Archer, and it is the most curious case. The whole thing we know about him from Fate is that he is some cynical mysterious anti-hero, so it is attractive to uncover his past, his motives for joining the Holy Grail War and his real identity. The last, but not the least central character is Tōsaka Rin. That’s subjective, but she is just my favourite female character of Fate/stay night, so it is nice for her to be in the highlight. Another little thing to point out about the characters is the presence of Lancer. This guy is sarcastic, but noble warrior, who sadly doesn’t have a lot of screen time, but most of the scenes with him are hilarious. His interaction with Emiya and Tōsaka and that event with Kotomine easily made Lancer one of my favourite characters ever.

With all advantages of the original plot the film got a problem: it is rushed, and many of the background things not important for the story are left behind. But that is understandable, because it’s impossible to cram the whole UBW route into two hours film, and I think Deen has done all it can. Scenarists could try to adopt the plot by removing some of the main events, but obviously nothing good can came out of this. In fact, simplification is common problem for adaptations of Nasu-shi’s works. He has an amazing fantasy, and his stories have a lot of unique weird concepts, which are left unmentioned or unexplained in the anime adaptations. Tsukihime suffered greatly from it, and Fate/stay night TV series wasn’t untainted too. (I cannot say for sure about Kara no Kyōkai, because I still cannot find enough time to read the original, but I think it has its moments either.)

So, in this film we got perfectly animated key events of UBW route. Regarding it as an addition for the visual novel, this film is a great thing to remind about good old time spent on reading the original, and there is nothing new or unexpected came out of the viewing, therefore I think it is 8 points worth.

The only Fate Stay Night anime I have watched is the original 2006 version which I really enjoyed. I know that this movie is based on the anime of the same name, which I will also watch however, as a stand alone movie, it was shitty.

I find anime movies based off a series are usually just a really long summary of the anime and as a summary this sucked pretty bad. I usually never watch anime movies based off an actual anime because most of the time they tend to be just summaries. This is where I would rather have a filler anime movie ... instead of a whole retelling of the story in movie format. It's just pointless and a waste of money and resources.

I love Studio Ghibli movies so much more, because the movies are originals, they don’t just hash out the same material even if they have a source, like Howl’s Moving Castle and Ponyo which are both based on books.

First off, the first hour of this movie, was way too choppy. This is supposed to summarize the series yet, if I hadn’t watched the original and had a basic knowledge of the show and characters, I would have no clue what this anime was about. Especially, considering they edited it in really weird places. I had to mentally process how we got from point A to point B and before I knew what happened, I was already on point C. It made no sense. As a story as a whole, if someone were to just pick this movie up, they would be totally confused. They wouldn’t know what was happening at all.

The animation was nice to look at and a lot better compared to the original, especially the fight scenes. However, during that first hour, you just get this fast pace, basic knowledge of the plot: Of seven hero spirits in history who fight alongside magi (sorcerers) for the Holy Grail that grants any wish. They literally explain that in less than 2 minutes.

From that measly introduction, you get the main character Shiro, cleaning up after dinner, walking his friend back home and than you cut to a magi summoning a spirit and from there is goes everywhere. You get snip bits of characters meeting and fights and before you can wrap your head on what’s going on, the pace slows down a little, to where characters are finally having full fledged conversations with each other rather than just fighting.

The only real time the pace of the movie really slowed down and stopped being choppy errrr stopped being as choppy compared to the beginning was during the fight scenes.

It felt like the animators wanted to bombard you with characters so you couldn't recognize the lack of plot and story in this anime and before you know it, these characters are fighting again.

This movie to me is more confusing than Akira. I understood Akira, even though I really need to watch it again because, dame that movie really fucked with my head. Hell, the mangaka made Akira before he had concluded his manga series, so the movie and manga are different. That's what I call original!

But, this was in a completely different category of mind fuck. This turned my brain into putty with it’s choppy editing and terrible pacing. This is even worse than Angel Beats and that had 12 episodes, they had good solid episodes but terrible over all pacing. Too rushed. That’s what this was. Too rushed. They wanted to go to point A,B,C as fast as possible so they could take their sweet time on Z. Which is absolutely pointless, because a GOOD movies has a solid beginning and middle but this one lacked all three.

Of every Visual Novel adaptation I have seen, this is by FAR the most faithful to the source. Every point that advances the plot, and every bit of character development, it is all in there. This unfortunately makes the scenes seem schizophrenic at times, jumping around in a way that is likely confusing if you are not familiar with the game itself.

The music is good but they regrettably chose not to include any music from the original, not even remixes, and so some of the most epic songs simply aren't there. I left certain scenes feeling "This would have been much better if 'Emiya' had ... been playing", if it isn't broken don't fix it.

The art is clean and crisp, and fitting of the style, and Nasu's amazing storytelling isn't absent either. (The only shame is the Realta-Nua parts, but that is to be expected I suppose.)

If you've played the game? This movie is a 10, if you haven't, it will sit at around 7-8.

I watched Fate/Stay Night and Fate/Zero's first season before and enjoyed both a lot, so I had really high expectations before watching Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works. The Story and art are good. However, there is a little problem with the characters. Since the movie is only one hour and forty minutes, it fails to portray its characters in depth. Everything is happening as if in a rush. Perhaps if overall duration of the movie were longer, it could bring more depth to the characters. But still I enjoyed it and believe that everyone who watched TV series of Fate/Stay Night should give it ... a try!

I'm really disappointed by this movie! First of all, I'm a huge fan of the "Fate" franchise and have watched "Fate/Zero" and "Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works" the anime and am currently watching "Fate/EXTRA Last Encore", but this movie really is bad.

The worst thing is, that it feels like a summary of the anime, but without all the important scenes to understand the story.
Don't get me wrong here, the visuals are outstanding (Like you'd expect it from the "Fate" franchise), but I don't see any reason to watch this movie! This is also the reason I didn't enjoy it and giving it only a 1. ... To make this clearer: If you watched the anime, then there's no need to watch this movie, since it's the exact same scenes, just cut together with important scenes cut out so it fits into movie length. And if you haven't watched the anime, you shouldn't watch this movie, since there are so many scenes missing to understand the movie, that you will miss out on great things from the story and should just rather watch the anime.

The anime is great and I really like "Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works", it's actually my favorite "Fate" show, but I just don't get why this movie exists. If you ask me, just watch the anime, you'll enjoy it more...

The movie adaptation is just horrible. You can't even call this a summary, because 75% of Shirou's monologues and voice lines are cut. This is not a good starter for a first timer watcher. I can't really amass my dissatisfaction after finishing the movie.

The only scene I liked from the movie is the Shirou vs Archer, other than that all of it are completely dumpsterfire.

PLEASE IF YOU WANT TO WATCH THE FATE UBW ROUTE AS AN ANIME ONLY WATCHER AND IF IT'S YOUR FIRST TIME. WATCH THE UFOTABLE UBW ADAPTAION. ALTHOUGH ... THE VN IS STILL SUPERIOR, THE UFOTABLE ADAPTATION IS FAR FAR FAR BETTER THAN THIS.
