Ao no Exorcist: Yosuga-hen

Unlike his twin brother, Yukio, Rin Okumura never wished to know about their parents and the circumstances surrounding his own birth. Yet the master of time, Mephisto Pheles, gives Rin a key that transports him 40 years into the past when his late mother, Yuri Frederick Egin, was merely a child. With Mephisto's guidance, Rin leaps through the years of Yuri's childhood and her adolescence as an exorcist-in-training.

Early on, Yuri meets Shirou Fujimoto, Rin and Yukio's adoptive father. As Rin follows Yuri and Shirou's lives, he witnesses firsthand the initial appearances of Satan, his true father, and the horrors unfolding at the True Cross Order's special Section 13. Yuri's unique connection to Satan eventually leads Rin to the truth behind the most horrific event in exorcist history and the day he and Yukio were born—the Blue Night.

I honestly loved this season, the animation was already clean but the faces don’t look as weird like before in the last season
Blue exorcist story-line is one of the unique ones I’ve watched and read. I can agree that blue exorcist is not always good but i think it shows so many unique mixed emotions throughout the show.
This anime is still one of my favorites and I really hope for it to be continued. I’ve waited years since season 2 and i didn’t expect it to come back but i’m so happy it did because this anime just happened to be one of the first ... ones I watched when I started watching anime but that’s really not the only reason why I feel ao attached to it, I think I would fall inlove with this serie if I discovered it today and even if people think it’s trash or boring I personally love it just the way it is.

Mixed Feelings

Is it better than the previous season? Yes. Does that make it good? ... No.

The frustrating part about Ao no Exorcist and especially this season is that the story seems amazing. It is wildly intriguing to watch the story of the Blue Night, of how Satan fell in love with a normal girl, of the part that Rin and Yukio's dad played in all of it. All of the characters in this season are really interesting - in fact, more interesting than their children, in my opinion.
Unfortunately, this adaptation just doesn't do it justice. Though the animation seems to have improved slightly after the last ... few seasons made by Studio VOLN, it's still far from being up to today's standard. The art style is also still... A choice. I still missed the season 1 art every time I started an episode of this season. The editing has a slightly weird pace which doesn't exactly help when your animation & art does absolutely nothing to fill up the unnatural slowness of dialogue. The overall direction just wasn't good, though I'm sure that also has to do with budgeting.
Man, was it frustrating to watch such an interesting story be butchered by the execution of its presentation. This series deserves better.

In conclusion, never have I wanted to read a manga more after watching an anime. But not for the right reasons, I fear.

First and probably only review, but I just had to comment on how difficult getting through this season was. To the point where anyone who rated this season highly must've had some superhuman levels of patience. Everything drags in this season, like literally everything. Shots take forever, dialogue is cringy and adds nothing to each scene. Story is semi interesting but also tries too hard to get you to take it serious despite it being goofy half the time. Tonal whiplash is insane. Seeing the 8.00 average, granted from a small amount of ratings, brings pain to my soul. I would say this is undoubtedly ... the worst season of blue exorcist to date. There's been a lot of praise going around about how great the backstories were integrated and how everything tied together, but honestly it's actually not very difficult to write backstories to characters that didn't exist before this season. Even for the ones that did exist, they had minimal screen time beforehand. It just felt like this season was an attempt to do some much needed world building to justify why everything is the way that it is, but found a way to diminish and take away from the few strong points blue exorcist had. Take away the mystery aspect from the plot and you just get overly edgy, my backstory was tragic you should feel bad for me vibes. Not everything was horrible about the season but I can't imagine I'd ever rewatch it. I'll just try to forget this season even exists going forward, it was completely unnecessary.
