Madougushi Dahliya wa Utsumukanai

Tragically perishing from overwork, a young Japanese woman is reborn as Dahliya Rossetti, daughter of a newly entitled baron. Her father, Carlo, is a beloved magic artificer, a maker of magical tools. Inspired by him, Dahliya uses her memories from her previous life to create practical inventions and become a magic artificer like Carlo.

A few years later, the now adult Dahliya has made a name for herself and has gotten engaged to her father's apprentice. However, her life takes a turn for the worse when Carlo suddenly passes away and her fiancé leaves her for another woman not long after. Although having to fend for herself, Dahliya is not quite ready to give up on her dream of becoming a master artificer yet. She may be a single woman but, with the help from old and new allies, she is prepared to overcome any obstacle in her way.

This is a slow-burn slice of life type anime. Yes it's set in a "fantastica land" the protagonist has been reborn into, but it's not about the swords and sorcery, there's no high-drama or empire spanning plots. There's no dastardly villains that need defeating, this is, if you were to really narrow it down, a coming into your own as an adult story. The character development of the main characters is well done and the side characters are "mostly" well done. There are one or two that could have been fleshed out a bit more and their relationships established, but to ... do so probably would have detracted from necessary time spent on the main characters. The "drama", what there is of it, develops in the small bits and the small moments.

Characters are showing growing by small things like subtle clothes changes, hair, posture, and bearing. People are just "people" there are no moustache twirling villains tying people to the train tracks.

The musical choices are understated but apt. There's no "dance along and get with it" opening or closing pieces, and they're not "wallow in the melancholy of this song" pieces either. But they work for the production. The art style isn't dynamic, but there's no huge action set pieces either, and it flows well enough with the world design and the moments. Could it benefit from a more fluid style? Maybe, but it's not exactly a slide show either, there are just one or two moments where you're hearing speech but it doesn't seem lips are moving.

I have no idea of the source material for this, but I would be happy to see a 2nd season. I think there is room for growth and development of the world and the relationships. I think some of the negative reviews are from people who need every box opened to be closed, and want "drama" and/or 'world changing events' in their stories. Which is fine, but if that's what you're chasing, this anime is NOT for you. It's not even a "sweet nothing" anime like "By the grace of the gods". But it is enjoyable if this type of show is what you're in the mood for.

My personal review is 7.25/10 which with the site I round off to a 7. I recommend this anime if you are in the mood to watch a low-stress story that is quite enjoyable. But not if you are looking for either "sweet nothing mental floss" or "political drama".

Mixed Feelings

A simple but sweet story. That's it.

Dahlia, our freaky genius girl, has reincarnated into a world of magic and adventure, but unlike other isekai stories, her reincarnation has little relevance in this anime's plot. Though mentions of her past life are sprinkled as random afterthoughts occasionally, this story focuses its entirety on Dahlia's development of magical devices for everyday use.

Of course, the show begins with more gusto and intrigue outside of inventing, but the quick pace quickly tapers off after episode three. The show becomes so slow that we, the viewer, become victims of an onslaught of repetitive still shots that have absolutely ... nothing to do with the scene at hand (i.e. the leaves on the windowsill of the trade guild that I could most certainly draw from memory at this point). We also spend a tremendous amount of time watching Dahlia and co. eat and drink to the point that I wondered if the genre had changed to something more cooking-related halfway through.

Ultimately, Dahlia in Bloom is not the most outstanding show in terms of well...anything. The characters lack presence and the story often feels disjointed at best, with many scenes posing conflict only to cut to the resolution later without explanation. However, if you are looking for a simple yet sweet story that offers nothing more and nothing less, you might find joy in this one.

Characters are a 1/3 - None of them are annoying but no one notable either. Aside from her love for her father and magical devices and that she's kind, is there anything notable about her? Interesting? Not really. This is what is expected from any anime that at most only has 12 episodes in a season. With so little time, you're never going to get fully fleshed-out characters you can truly feel for. This applies to the FL as well as the ML. Show, don't tell. That's the rule in films and animation. Glimpses of their pain are not enough. You have to immerse your ... audience, a 10-second flashback or a 5-second scene of being ogled at isn't sufficient enough for the audience to connect to the characters. Being told "My friendships keep failing because I'm too handsome" will never be as impactful as a scene where we can SEE his friendships failing or being ostracized for his looks.

The story is a 1/3 - I have said in previous reviews I like it when it's Romance & Plot, not Romance = Plot but for this anime? There isn't even romance so what was the point? Don't get me wrong, I like how it's a slow-burn romance where it isn't love at first sight but there was no progress in the magical devices department and the story with her father was about for only four episodes or so. There is no climax. 1 season, sure it's just the beginning of the story but it's still a mini-story on its own and every story has a beginning, climax, and end. Here, it's just beginning. It feels like you got half of the episodes of a full season one then never got the other half.

Art is a 1/3 - Hey at least the ML is hot (in the panels when the art isn't wonky)
