BanG Dream! It's MyGO!!!!!

In their last year of middle school, the five band members of CRYCHIC went their separate ways after an unpleasant disbandment. Each wrestling with their own regrets, the girls enrolled in different high schools, hoping never to hear from one another again.

Meanwhile, Anon Chihaya transfers to Haneoka Girls' Academy in the middle of the school year. As most students play in a band as a hobby, Anon desires to fit in and spends her first days trying to recruit members for her own band, envisioning herself as the group's vocalist. She befriends Tomori Takamatsu, a shy girl who seems interested but hesitant about joining. As it turns out, Tomori used to be part of CRYCHIC, an experience that has scarred her deeply.

Through Tomori, Anon meets Taki Shiina and Soyo Nagasaki, both former members of the same band. Although Taki detests the idea of playing with Anon, Soyo is delighted to help her out. Now with Soyo by her side, Anon's dream of forming a band is within reach—if only she could find a few more members.

Note: This review was made before I watched the sequel "Ave Mujica". Some criticisms may be refuted in the sequel, but I am reviewing this as a standalone work. If you are wondering, I personally recommend this anime, but beware if you hate melodrama (you will punch your screen).

Spoilers ahead.

There are a ton of anime focusing on girl groups and music (ranging from idols to bands to DJs to superpowers). MYGO is another one of these anime, and it excels in creating extremely realistic (and irritating) school drama. This can be compared to a work such as White Album 2, where the purpose of the ... anime is to make the viewer want to punch the screen (this is a compliment). The four main girls are incredible in which nearly every action they did until the climax made me facepalm. I have to applaud the writers because even after all of this tomfoolery, I was still invested in the band's future.

Even though this is a positive review, I will start by addressing the flaws. Notably, Raana is barely a character and more of a plot device (specifically for episode 10, the climax). The only characterization we get of her is that she was supposed to perform in her grandma's live house, but it got shut down. That's... basically it. Nothing else to say really, which is a missed opportunity. I also have to criticize the actual ending of the series for MYGO (where Anon and Tomori talk to one of the girls in Ave Mujica). To me, this is a bit inconclusive. We also don't know anything about Mutsumi except that she never thought CRYCHIC was fun and that she joins Ave Mujica (I'm assuming these will be explained in Ave Mujica, but her inclusion in the series does literally next to nothing over than be a person Soyo hates). Lastly, the fact that Sakiko's reason for leaving CRYCHIC was never mentioned to the girls and only alluded to the viewer in the last 30 seconds of the anime. I love the drama in the anime, but seriously? Bit contrived and convenient.

Going on to the positives, the drama (which is equivalent to middle school/high school girls slapfighting for 9 episodes) is so well executed. Every single one of the four main girls is developed and fleshed out to an extent they actually feel like real people. It shows people haunted by their pasts and getting through it, possibly to the best extent an anime has done. I especially sympathize with Anon's problems during the series, but credit is due to Tomori, Taki, and Soyo. I also like how even after they got back together in the end, not everything is sunshine and rainbows. Ending their conflict wasn't a magical healing bandage, but rather a change in their personally that finally let them mesh together as "lost girls" (aka MYGO!!!). Music, voice actresses, plot are all phenomenal.

Anon is one of the best anime protagonists realistically. She is a very unique and interesting character, and after Episode 5 she truly does her best for the rest of the band. Tomori is the driving force, both as the vocalist and the lyrics writer, and the person who kickstarted the band's reunion. I respect her willpower even after CRYCHIC and the events of the series. Taki is a very protective character, albeit the least developed of the four. She is headstrong and pushes many of the events in the series forward. Soyo is one of the best examples of codependency in fiction and the wrongness of codependency through her character arc (shoutout to Sakiko's rant). Soyo's collapse and slow recovery is expertly crafted, and while I hated her at times I could sympathize with her at the same time.

Overall, this is an amazing anime. One of the best character studies made in the medium (possibly THE BEST), which definitely could change perspectives and lives (it sure did for me!)

Mixed Feelings

The first few episodes are quite amazing, but I think it drags on near the end, becoming a much more generic idol show. It's clear that the final few episodes are written just to get people interested in the new group, that (if you already know Bandori) just looks like Roselia 2.0. And, MyGo (the band) itself felt forced in the way it came together. Most of the characters don't feel like genuine friends, and it's treated like "once people get over their argument, they'll be besties!" which doesn't really make sense. The animation isn't bad, but I think it looks quite choppy at times ... when they reduce the framerate to make it look 2D. The voice acting is pretty strong.
I think people who liked Girls Band Cry or maybe Bocchi The Rock would like this, but I didn't, so I can only partially recommend it. Good luck

Beyond my expectations, I hoped it would be a fun anime according to the anime title and the previous series, but in reality there were many dark sides and betrayals in the storyline, to be honest, I couldn't enjoy this anime and several times I wanted to stop watching it, but I tried to keep looking for the positive side and maybe A good resolution at the end of the episode, which in fact remains a mess with a loose ending where the root of the conflict from the beginning of the episode is never clearly revealed, instead showing an antagonist scene with a ... broken home background, maybe if there is a season 2, the antagonist character Saki will be the main MC with the background of a broken home and to make the story darker, scenes of domestic violence are added which usually lead to scenes of immoral acts committed by his parents which change the character of the good-hearted patient into a traitor and aloof. This is in line with the last episode where a mysterious band was created with elements of gothic appearance imitating Rosalia's band. This is just my assumption, yes that's the bad impression I can imagine from this BangDream anime series, maybe this is the dark version of BangDream. I'm disappointed with this series, there isn't a single good soundtrack, there isn't a story that creates motivation related to the band and the goals they achieve, all the characters have bad social problems that end in prolonged conflict without complete resolution, so don't expect There are cheerful and positive characters in this series but there are characters with social ills who provide negative energy in the story cycle and for those who watch this anime it is really bad. I liked the previous BangDream series but not this series. So the story line rating: 4

for the soundtrack song, score: 5 (the songs don't touch my heart.Nothing can be saved for my playlist of songs from this anime soundtrack )

the graphic animation is: 7.5 (the graphic background is good but yes I don't like 2.5D characters because they don't have details, they look like inflated balloons and don't blend in with the background graphics, big-eyed anime characters are not suitable for 2.5D animation)

I don't recommend this anime because it's not a fun anime with positive motivation girlband, 80% of the story is just full of conflict without creativity that reflects the band. There is not a single element in this anime that reflects the anime title BangDream!!
