Shuumatsu no Walküre

The gods of the world—from Greek to Norse to Hindu mythology—gather every one thousand years to make one important decision: whether or not to wipe out mankind. Repulsed by humanity's selfishness, the council unanimously votes to destroy all humans. But before the decree is enacted, Brunhilde, one of the 13 Valkyries of Valhalla, interrupts the meeting to give mankind a chance at survival.

Brunhilde proposes the idea of enacting Ragnarök, an event in which the strongest 13 mortal warriors fight against 13 gods in one-on-one matches. Although the trial is ridiculed by the gods, the demigod takes advantage of their pride and forces them into an agreement. However, Brunhilde herself must recruit the mightiest heroes throughout humanity's thousand-year history and guide them to victory before they meet their untimely demise.

I found "Record of Ragnarok" on Netflix, and since getting off work early, I've been binge-watching it! I’m currently on episode 9, and I have to say—wow, this anime is fantastic! It's filled with action, stunning animation, and a storyline that keeps you hooked.

The plot is unique and surprising, making every episode exciting. The artwork is great, and each character has a personality that matches their mythological background, which adds depth to the story.

The English dub is excellent too; the voice actors really bring the characters to life.

If you enjoy Greek mythology, shonen anime, or just thrilling action, I highly recommend "Record of Ragnarok." It’s ... a hidden gem that deserves more love. Don’t miss out on this amazing series!

Mixed Feelings

In short: Watch only if you have patience. Otherwise read the manga.

After being in my bucket list ever since it first aired back in 2021, I decided to give it a watch just now, and I must say that this anime is NOT accurate lore-wise. And the pacing is just another letdown.

If you are looking for cool fights, and
you are not into mythologies and stuff, not sensitive, and ok with weird logic, then you can watch it. For someone who is interested in mythologies, this anime was hurting to watch. The power scaling is also not good.

Animation and pacing are just another letdown, I ... wasn't expecting much of it anyway but whatever I was expecting it was NOT this. The animation gets somewhat better in Season 2, but the pacing is still slow.

If you are into mangas, then I'd prefer you to read manga rather than watching the adaptation.

This anime is what happens when you take a promising concept/manga, the tell the studio to produce it with a tenth of the budget you initially promised.

Coming from a non manga reader, the entire concept seemed super enticing: Famous human in history fighting powerful Gods in mythology. The anime does a good job in providing flavourful and conceptually fresh designs for well know figures such as Loki or Jack the ripper.

Unfortunately this is almost all the good thing I can say about the anime.

I have heard previously that watching Record of Ragnarok is basically watching a PowerPoint presentation, and it was not wrong. So ... many frames are shown as still pictures toggling between one another where animation should have occurred instead. Even when animation did occur, it was neither flashy nor fluid, literally only as a formality for you to view the show.

The fight themselves were not hype. The excessive amount of stalling that will put even one piece to shame, combined with subpar animation and fight choreography, results in a fight sequence that feels frustrating to watch, especially due to the fact there will often be three different types of audience reacting after each moveset.

Now, let's ask ourselves the question: what do we do if our budget is a tenth of what we need to make an enjoyable anime? The answer: Let's fill it with some God awful comedy, and draw half the anime in this goofy dumb dumb style.

Does this look like a bad idea to you? Don't worry, it's just as bad when you actually get to see it. I'm not sure which genius thinks comedy is a good concept to chuck into this anime, but someone ought to tell him that making the cringiest content possible does not make a scene funny. To even further ruin the mood, make sure to shove these scenes, drawn in an intentionally dumb and goofy style, in the middle of this supposed "epic battle".

The studio did not have what it takes to realise even a fraction of the potential of this work, and rather than accepting its flaws gracefully, it opts to gaslight everyone into thinking everything is fine with the most questionable approach I have ever seen in anime history. This anime is a prime example of sub-quality work, created by people who does not understand, or most likely don't care how the end product will look.
