Devilman: Crybaby

So in my opinion this was an awesome series.

I understand why there are a lot people hating it but I felt so many emotions during the last episodes that I just said WOW. It shows you some important things like civil war and has a very good end.

The only thing i would change would probaply be the plot because at some points you get confused and dont unedrstand what is going on.

The caracter developments were well-done in the main caracters but at the others not as good.

I really enjoyed every episode and i am happy i saw it.

Definitely not for everyone. A story about the nature of good and evil, about people and humanity, told very bravely.

I fully understand anyone who thinks it's complete garbage, doesn't understand why and thinks it's overkill.
But this is a story about human nature, most of us don't want to hear about what monsters people can be. This show pulls the right string and evokes the emotions it should.

Everything fits together here, graphics, music. This is definitely a very artistic anime that is not ashamed of anything and that's why I will definitely remember it.

... The obvious references to Evangelion warmed my heart.
I don't give it a 10 mainly because at times I wanted more to be said, and at times, the chaos was hard to watch.

I watched all Devilman stuff since the 1970s before watching Devilman Crybaby. I'm glad to see that this version is a faithful adaptation of the manga, and interestingly, they set it in the modern era. The OVAs left me hanging. However, I still prefer the animation style and the 80s setting in the OVA.

I found the story enjoyable, and the gradual focus on how terrible people are is one of the most interesting aspects of the plot. Although the show seems to be about a creature that is half-devil and half-man fighting other devils to protect humanity, as the story progresses, we are presented with ... more evidence that makes us question whether humanity deserves to be protected. I understand that this type of storytelling is not everyone's cup of tea, but I personally find it enjoyable, as humanity is flawed in many ways. I appreciate stories that are not necessarily black-and-white and have a more ambiguous setup. There were likable characters on all sides, including the sweet Miki, the post-transformation Akira, who was crazy and cool, and a wide variety of creepy and weird devil creatures. The show explored the idea that "goodness" is a choice, and humans often make poor choices while believing themselves to be correct. I had issues with the pacing toward the middle and end, but that ending was so good! I really like anything unusual, and the events of the last two episodes were extreme, as expected! However, this show's adaptation of Silene's episode disappointed me. It was a far cry compared to the OVA, but the sexual stuff is much appreciated.

Initially, the animation style didn't appeal to me. I still prefer the style they used in the OVAs. The new animation seemed hasty and unfinished, with very light line work, washed-out colors, and often disproportionate body proportions that suggested a rushed production process. Although I eventually grew accustomed to the style, I was still put off by the characters' excessive "stretching out," which made their legs unnaturally long and thin, as if they couldn't support their own body weight. While this may seem trivial, I believe an unusual animation style can be distracting and detract from the show's content, which happened to me while watching Crybaby.

Devilman Crybaby, like its predecessor, is extremely graphic, which should be considered when deciding if it's something you'd like to check out. There's a lot of nudity, some graphic situations of a sexual nature, and a lot of violence, including gore. It's animated, of course, so it's not quite the same as watching a super-bloody horror movie, but it absolutely has the capability to disgust and disturb based on your own personal lines.

I enjoyed the show overall. I appreciated the mature content and the commentary on humanity. The show was intriguing, entertaining, bizarre, thought-provoking, and somewhat mesmerizing; I found myself eagerly anticipating the next episode. Although the conclusion was a little bit unsatisfying, it didn't make me dislike the show, as I've had similar experiences with other shows. While some elements could have been executed better, I unreservedly recommend this show to those who enjoy graphic anime with supernatural themes.

Probably the most significant anime of 2018. A netflix original project with the direction of Masaaki Yuasa and created by his studio "Science SARU". Another one adaptation of the famous early '70s manga "Devilman". The former Devilman anime titles were great, including 3 movies "Devilman: Tanjou-hen", "Devilman: Yochou Sirene-hen" and "Amon: Devilman Mokushiroku" which is an alternative version of the story and an adaptation of the homonymous manga. That makes Yuasa work more difficult cause he should create something similarly terrifying and disgusting but if the series wasnt something special it woundnt have any value. He guided the anime with his signature and present a ... well done ova with a different prespective but still with the vibes that someone who love the original story or the genre wants.

From the first episode becames clear that it was a series full of gore and without sexual or any other taboos. Sex, alcohol, drugs, weapons and other illegal activities taking place in the series building the best conditions το highlight the story. All the pieces works properly together, animation, colors, designs, aesthetic in general, music, characters and plot. The theme is hardcore and all characteristics of the series follows that. Music composition especially is one of my favorite element in Devilman: Crybaby, raps were well writing, seems it was a professional work and operate with the series perfectly either presenting part of the plot with a very interesting way or for hype and feels with the butterfly rap scene. OSTs were on point too, trance beats gives a powerfull disturbing feeling that the series needs.

The only problem i have with Devilman is that the series needed 2 more episodes to connect the last parts of the story, the transition was steep and doesnt help the story to present the important momments as good as they need to be presented. Maybe it probably needs a better work in some details visually cause in momments designs and the scenery seems kind of poor made but the general image fits the theme almost perfect so that wasnt an important issue at all.

Devilman: Crybaby - An dark Anime with a good hidden Message.

Story:I don´t know, what i should say...im speachless. Devilman: Crybaby started a cool atmosphere and an okay story and will destroy your brain (or your your PC) at end. I dont mean that in a bad way. No Every person will like the story, but i think its a cool and dark story (with naked Boobs), that represents the stupidity of humanity really good. (╯°□°）╯︵ ┻━┻

Character: One person makes so many Bitchmoves, that i really hate him...But i loved the maincharacter(he is SO COOL in demonic form).So, thats an compensation!

Artstyle is fine. Nothing nore. Not ... the best, but also no eye-cancer.
I liked the music. It was pretty cool.

My biggest critic point in this anime: the ending. I dont like it. It ripped a hole in my heart. Mo, this Anime has no ending in my opinion T.T (-2 Points for this ending xD)
Result: The first cool Netflix Anime with a cool Maincharacter and a dark, thought-provoking Story. 8/10

REVIEW WITH NO SPOILERS

Devilman Crybaby it's a really dirty anime. And I mean it in many ways. So if you don't tolerate profanity, curel deaths... profanity and cruel deaths in once (this last one happens a lot in the anime) i would recommend you to be away from this show. But if you don't care or like this stuff let's continue the review.

The animation is bizarre, specially in the fight scenes (some people will find the fights really ugly and confunsing), but I couldn't imagine an animation more appropriate for this plot.

Oh and the plot... it's basicaly a boy who ends up to become a ... demon. But there's a lot of symbolism, mysticism and religion in the story; and the end was really surprising to me.

So Devilman Crybaby it's an anime for adults with a lot of violence, perversity and death. I did not score 9 or 10 because there are some unnecessary moments and characters... but it is still higher than the average of gore animes!

Devilman Crybaby is one of those series that takes you by surprise, at least to me it did. Beware though, because this Anime is NOT FOR EVERYONE. It contains gore, extreme nudity, and violence (rape, suicide and other sensitive matters)

The story is great, presenting unique and believable characters and an extremely original approach to the "humans against a more powerful being" (like in Tokyo Ghoul or Parasyte). It is unpredictable but it is one of those shows that leaves clues for you to find and make a conclusion on your own. Much like Evangelion, which was created with inspiration to the original Devilman manga, ... it tackles heavily on religion and the right to live which is uncommon for a show these days, at least in such a scale

Because of the lack of limits that were given to the studio (Science Saru) from the hand of Netflix, it stands out as one of the most original and grotesque anime that I´ve watched. This is due to the animation which has a very different style (much like Shinsekai Yori) and accompanied by the beautiful OST by Kensuke Ushio which gives to life to this broken world.

Devilman Crybaby is amazing and all the credit should go to Masaaki Yuasa (Director) and Ichirō Ōkouchi (Writer). I really recommend this anime, then again this Anime is NOT FOR EVERYONE

I have to tell you in advance, that I have never written a review on any anime, so be gentle with criticism.

Devilmen: Crybaby, the fresh and crispy Netflix anime took 200 minutes of my life, but I would never swap it for anything. I managed to finish it yesterday midnight and I’m still in catharsis, in a completely different state of mind than I usually am after experiencing art.

In medias res, I will talk about the flaws I have discovered in the series, because there are way less of these, than positive features.

1. The foreshadowing in the first episode was a bit too obvious, especially ... for the eyes of a person who was brought up in a Christian family and has detailed knowledge about the Bible. I think it is only a minor mistake, and if we take the framed structure of the anime into consideration, it comes out beautifully in the end, and makes it a very well thought out, in a way lyrical story.

2. In my opinion the usage of the name “Satan” was not the best option. The original name of Satan in the Bible is Lucifer, which means “bringer of light”. This name would have given Ryo’s character an additional dimension, and I’m a bit sad that the writer (Go Nagai) did not exploit this opportunity.

3. The most frequently mentioned flaw of the series is the somewhat dumb implementation of the change in posessed characters’ appearance and personality. But if we consider the character design and the entire aesthetic of by the anime, the harsh changes in appearances can be overlooked. Furthermore it was a crucial to understand the complex nature of people possessed by demons who have previously been completely pure. It helps the viewer comprehend the message that we all are “devilman” with flaws and evil features besides having a human heart that is capable of producing an entire range of different emotions.

4. The last thing I’d like to mention is that some initial questions of the anime, most of them emerging in the first episode were left without a proper answer. Why do people need a certain drug to get possessed by demons, and what is that drug? How did Ryo know about the existence of Amon, and his exceptional powers if he lost all his knowledge about who he was before (leader of demons)? If any of you can come up with an answer or explanation, I’d be more than happy, maybe it was just me who didn’t notice some minor details.

Now let’s move on to the positive features of the anime, which basically includes EVERYTHING, but I might be a little biased.

1. Story: I loved the framed structure of the story, which produced a bit of confusement in the beginning, but the last episode made everything clear so beautifully. The first half of the anime can be characterised by the adjectives gore, dirty, perverted, sexual, hypnotic, funny and extremely modern. The scenes incorporated today’s nightlife and club culture, the sexualizing of everything, the sexual perversion of people in modern society of high living standards, even fashion and music were completely on point. The story gradually transverted from this extremely dirty and materialistic phase to a divine and supernatural aspect. The gore still remained (fortunately) but it became more serious, and actually making the viewers’ heart ache. It might just be me, but animes in which EVERYONE dies is my kinda thing, so I was happy that not even the purest, most innocent characters received mercy.

I really appriciated that despite my Christian education I was still surprised by certain turns of the story. The counter attack of God’s divine army, the unfolding of Ryo’s evil plan and so on. The ending was very emotional, and it close the circle of the events with the destruction of the globe perfectly.

2. Characters: Character development is definitely the biggest strength of the anime. Not only the three protagonists (Akira, Ryo, Miki) went through great changes and development, but minor characters (Miko, Mayuta, Wamu) as well.

For me Akira represents human nature the best. He goes into great depths through the story (e.g.: raping and fighting Silene) and exploits the full potential of his demon powers, but still manages to keep his human heart, and this duality shows great emotional strength. This is where the title gets its meaning: a devil that is capable of crying, which is an ultimate way of expressing emotions. Even if there is no practical difference between demons and “Devilman” (it is just an artificial name given to Akira by Ryo), the self-identification is determining. It is a beautiful allegory to human nature, which is never black and white but the mixture of good and evil, and the only thing that counts is how we look at ourselves, how we define ourselves. Declearing that one is a “bad person” deprives him the will to act right.

Ryo and Satan cannot be identified as completely the same person in my opinion. Ryo have lost his memories about being a fallen angel, and was conveinced he was a human until the “relevation” he found in the Bible, that made him discover his past. His subconscious though, led him to fulfill his eventual purpose, but certain signs throughout the story showed that he was doubting himself (especially when it was concerning the life of Akira). In his Satan “form” there was no doubt written on his face. He was 100% sure in his goal and was ready to deploy all the means necessary to achieve it. The greatest surprise in my view was the fact that even Satan was able to change in a way. This is a feature of most anime that no character is purely good or evil. (This is the reason why I prefer anime to Hollywood shit.) In the closing scene he cried, which was a bit predictable and “too perfect”, but it was essential to understand his struggle. It proved him that love exists, and that “He cried too”, thus it was sort of an enlightment for him, in the exact moment when the annihilation of the world began.

One of the most interesting supporting Characters was Mayuta or Kukun. He was the only openly gay character in the series, and his sorrow after the death of his love was extremely moving, it made the show even more colorful. It was visible that his sadness fed the demon inside him, thus is it a good allegory for depression or other mental illnesses. He experienced the worst traumas in the anime (being revealed in front of the whole world meanwhile a massacre) and maybe because of his lack of emotional intelligence, he couldn’t process these events completely. He was easily manipulated, weak and a coward. It might sound like I hated him because of these traits, but that’s not the case. He was not able to achieve as much as Akira did, but he had a far worse backstory as well, which made him the ultimate “sadboy”, and that is exactly why he appaeled to me.

3. Art: Straght up perfect. In the first few minutes I had to adapt to the character design, since I was used to a more elaborated, “classical” design. It is very avantgarde if I can say that, there is a bit of everything in it from constructivism to pop art. It is also a great mixture of ancient and ultra-modern, since the Biblical nature of the story placed into modern times requires that as well. My favourite thing about the art was the naturalism it represented. The raw sexual and gore scenes, that had an extremely strong impact on my senses were to live for. I don’t easily become shocked of horroristic scenes, but the episode in which Taro ate his mom while his dad watching them, crying and hesitating whether to kill him or not had me straight up SHAKING.

4. References: There were no direct references in the anime, but the nature of the story and certain scenes have very much resembled those of Neon Genesis Evangelion. Both series are based on Biblical symbols and are centered around the theme of creation, genesis. In my opinion Devilman: Crybaby does a better job in that regard, with less waisting of time on fucking tsunderes and annoying complaining (yeah, I’m talking about Shinji).

5. Music: No words are needed, I’ve already mentioned that it’s exceptional and really sets the mood.

Now to the closing remarks. I know my review is not perfectly structured, since thoughts are still circling in my head like crazy, but I tried my best. Sadly I do not have the capacity to write about a dozen of more detailes such as Miki and Miko’s beautiful relationship or the historical and social dimension of the story (which is actually the most interesting thing so idk why I skipped it, I might write another review on just this later). All in all I loved the anime despite its flaws, tbh I love it even more because of them. I highly recommend it to everyone, since it’s extremely thought provoking. I warn you, around episode 9-10 you’ll be like a Crybaby.

Devilman Crybaby is not for the faint of heart. At its core, Devilman Crybaby is a show about the corrupt nature of man and explores heavy topics like fear mongering, mass hysteria, and even love, all disguised as a massive sex and gore fueled acid trip. It does have some pacing issues, but otherwise it's a great series to binge, preferably by yourself.

Art: 9, It's cool, striking, and charmingly seizure-inducing, but the show does know when to turn it down a notch. But there are a couple of times where the art style can feel silly, instead of stylistic. Oh, and Akira has a ... butt chin, so there's that.

Sound: 8, it's lovely. There are very few songs, but they don't feel out of place or repetitive, and no two songs sound the same. However, because all of the songs are so different, the soundtrack doesn't really feel cohesive. Devilman no Uta is a bop tho.

Character: 8, The main characters, Rio and Akira are polar opposites and play off each other quite well. I absolutely loved the cast of side characters--Miki, Miko, and the rapper gang were all so charming. Miki, Akira's good female friend, gets much more well-deserved attention, as does her friend Miko, who I think has one of the best character arcs of the series. There are a couple of really nice, fleshed-out LGBT characters too.

Enjoyment: 9, the remake of Devilman could have been released at no better time. Like I said before, it deals with topics like fear mongering, mass hysteria, and distrusting your neighbor--all of which can be traced back to the political climate of the US today. I thought it was pretty good.

Overall: 8, It's pretty solid.

Being someone who has specific tastes on anime, this anime is one that has exceeded a lot of my expectations. First off, the story is strong and has a clear beginning and end, this is different from most shows that are out now as they like dragging on making a story that just never ends.

Another thing is characters. Characters are not invincible, so if a character makes a mistake consequences erupt, and die quite brutal deaths. Characters are constantly growing and also portray a multitude of human emotions that aren't seen commonly in most anime.

Other things such as the soundtrack is good because when ... situations arise, they are used appropriately and to a degree that is effective. Other things such as the art style is that is psychedelic and over the top with sexual and violent themes which is uncommon in anime today.

Overall, this anime is not for everyone, it's an acquired taste for those who want something fresh for the season that is not "moe", "imouto" or "isekai". This is an anime similar to an age for people who liked Ghost In The Shell or Akira, a very mature and violent anime geared towards adults.

Devilman Crybaby, Netflix's first great anime ... but it's not for everyone


When Netflix announced that they would be directly producing several anime this 2018, I could not help but worry. After all, their first "attempt" was Neo Yokio. But if Devilman Crybaby is the sign of the times to come, we can breathe in ease

Based on the manga of Go Nagai, Devilman Crybaby has a story that will be familiar to older anime lovers. Not for nothing the original work is from 1972, with multiple adaptations to the anime in a series and several OVAS. This review is late. I had several weeks thinking about ... what to write for this review, because basically the whole community has already spoken and the verdict can not be more positive.

For some, even though January was not finished when it premiered, it is the anime of the year. A daring and perhaps premature affirmation, but one that has a certain credibility. Directed by Masaaki Yuasa, known for his work in works such as the acclaimed Mind Game (2004) and more recently by Tatami Galaxy (2010), Ping Pong (2014) and Space Dandy (2014), Devilman Crybaby is a statement of intent.

The demon has arrived


Using a more mainstream version of his peculiar style of art and animation, Yuasa takes us on an apocalyptic journey in which no one is safe from demons, both real and figurative. Devilman Crybaby is a series that attacks us from all directions and confronts us with the worst of human nature. But he also shows us its positive side in characters like Akira Fudo or Miki Makimura, Akira's romantic interest and his reason for preserving sanity. However, before the deep darkness that nests in the hearts of humans and demons, it is impossible to leave unharmed of this trip full of violence and sex of 10 episodes.

For those who are not familiar with the original work of Go Nagai, in Devilman humanity is under threat because of the appearance of a race of demons. Beings dominated by their lower instincts that take over human bodies and then devote themselves to killing and devouring others. Ryo Asuka, Akira's best friend, believes that the way to exterminate them is to expose them and that is why he convinces our protagonist to accompany him to a party in which he attacks many of those present, seeking to attract the demons. In the face of danger, Akira is possessed by the powerful demon Amon. But by keeping his goodness and humanity, he dominates and uses his powers to eliminate the rest. This is how Devilman was born, who swears to defeat monsters to protect humanity.

A very changed Akira, more attractive, more voracious and savage, emerges from the transformation. However, his sensitive nature and love for humanity remain intact. So much so that he is still very prone to tears when he sees someone suffer. He remains a compassionate soul and therefore dominates the inner demon. An allegory of what happens with many real-life demons, unable to control their worst impulses.

In that sense, the original work of Go Nagai, although disturbing and with a downright depressing ending, is at bottom an instructive experience.

Devilman Crybaby is not for weak stomachs


But as much as that is the message behind this original Netflix anime, the truth is that it is not a series for anyone. In a sense, it is a work that belongs to another era of anime. In the late 70's and during the 80's there was much more anime like this. Bloody, terrifying, with provocative ideas and a singular appetite for destruction. Those were the times of Akira, Guyver, Violence Jack. As a medium, the anime was much more daring, both in their films, as their OVA's and even on television. Even harmless series like Dragon Ball were allowed to be much more gore.

It is not that today these elements are not preserved, but in general they are seen in products issued late in the morning in Japan. In general, the anime is now much more measured when it comes to violence and sex ... In quotes, of course. He who seeks finds, if those are his tastes. But in the case of Devilman's manga, it's not just the graphic violence, but the ideas behind it.

In Crybaby the original story is modernized, adapting it to these times of social networks, rave parties and rappers. But this work, which is definitely not for the faint-hearted, does not use its disturbing images for free. There is a purpose and that is what makes it special. It is to look at the most unpleasant of mankind. It is to look into the abyss in a superficial way, without risk. That's why the series plays with our expectations, going from moments of exaggerated sexualization with breasts bouncing like basketballs to scenes in which human beings are devoured alive by demons.

This series insists almost recklessly in showing us how we are capable of persecuting and killing those we do not understand, the different ones. Be it humans or other devilman, who like Akira are not evil. It is a clear comparison with the intolerance and hatred that abounds in social networks, and in the streets in the light of the sun.

Although its origin is a work with more than 40 years of history, Devilman Crybaby feels modern and would say that it is new if it were not because it is not. With this series Netflix has shown audacity, taking full advantage of the fact that it is not a conventional television network. Devilman Crybaby is a series that for many will be better to ignore. There will be those who criticize it for its strange animation and for its unconventional history, but it is an irrefutable proof that anime is also for adults. It does so by subverting prejudices about masculinity or giving a total turn to the classic story of the hero.

In addition, for everything that manages to leave us speechless and amazed at how far it dares to arrive, it also manages to break the heart of the spectator from one moment to the other. I insist, it is not for everyone and you have to have the right mentality before you start to see it, but even if I do not dare to call it "the best of the year" so soon, without doubt it is a candidate.

What takes away the 10


But for all the good that I said about Devilman Crybaby, I can not close without being completely honest. The length of the series plays against and takes away points. Certainly this is a problem that also suffers from the original manga. With only 5 volumes it is difficult to establish a relationship with many characters, including Miki, who has a much lower weight in the original work.

The loss of many lives loses impact for this reason in the manga, and the anime suffers from the same evil. It is difficult to feel empathy for characters that you do not get to know at all. While the original anime, despite its 39 episodes, does not adapt the real end of the manga, this one does, but its rhythm is devilishly fast. So much, that it reaches its resolution abruptly.

Furthermore, in his praiseworthy attempt to make many secondary characters visible - without a doubt trying to counteract the aforementioned problem - it tells in a very superficial way the effect that the appearance of demons has on society. The mere revelation of its existence leads the humans of the series to a destructive spiral that is too abrupt, which, while it may seem realistic, does not follow a process. Although perhaps I turn on the same point: the series needed more episodes.

However, I recognize that although that would make it narratively more cohesive, it would reduce the impact to the viscerality of seeing it in one sitting. Anyway, I'm left with a solid 9 and my recommendation to see it, if you have the willingness to tolerate it.

Summary

Devilman Crybaby is a visceral experience that leads us to explore the darkest side of humanity and its demons. Suffers a bit for its brevity, but it is certainly a candidate for the best of the year ... although it is just beginning.

It's really confusing to me how some people actually dislike this anime?? First off Masaaki Yuasa did a fantastic job of creating an anime adaption of devilman which was created in the 1970's to bring into the modern times of the 21st century. His use of narrative starting the series with much action and gaggy humor only to turn it into something completely dramatic serves the title well.

The music works perfectly well, everything from the demonic chanting blending with the EDM influenced music to the rap/beatboxing segments - which mind you if you actually pay attention brings in a lot of symbolism about the story ... but also the philosophy about it, e.g when they rap about the how the demons are roaming the earth and taking everything, which can be very frightening but also saying how are humans any different to demons because were basically the same. I MEAN COME ONE IF THATS NOT SYMBOLISM RIGHT THERE???

The anime bombards viewers with images of neon, jiggling, distored women and sliced up, bleeding men. The action is uncomfortable to watch, but eventually you find yourself becoming numb to it, as you'll realize it's not there for entertainment it's been shown like this because as viewers we need to visualize what it would be like in that situation how things would have looked like and I think Masaaki Yuasa again does a gorgeous job by portraying these images of distressing humans and demons.

The use of editing by Akari Saito, also serves the aesthetics and context of the series quite good (e.g when Miki wrote an article about Akira saying how she doesn't think his a bad person whilst those scenes of hate comments raided the screen she still continued to type, which i thought was great as it shows that this is what reality is and people no matter what you say, people will continue to hate on what you have to say), with the same applying to the drawing and the rather intense animation.

Another thing that stood out was the ending, most people seemed to also dislike the ending and maybe that's why they dislike the anime, but if you dint know that manga in the 70's ended like that as well, and the fact that Masaaki Yuasa didn't do a whole 360 turn where it's been changed and just stuck the original ending made me quite happy. As much as I love a happy ending as the next person you could say I've been selfishly waiting along time for tragedy ending and devilman crybaby has satisfied my needs. It might have left a bitter sweetness in heart but to me that was the goal, although how much I and many people didn't come to like Ryo towards the end Masaaki Yuasa created such a great ending that made most people sympathize with him even though we didn't want to.

I believe the fact that most people didn't find this appealing was because (and i hate using this word) was for a more "mature" audience, and I'm just taking about age in general, I'm talking about emotionally and psychologically. There's a lot of heavy and intense subject matter this series encounters, and not many people will be able to handle or understand for that matter. personally I think devilmen crybaby was a straight 10/10. I haven't seen in a long time where there has been such a show that tackles many harsh topics that can relate to reality in many ways but still manages to create such a fine animation specimen out of it . Well done to Masaaki Yuasa.

Devilman Crybaby is an absolute masterpiece of an anime series that is sure to captivate and amaze viewers with its stunning visuals, gripping storyline, and unforgettable characters. This show is a true work of art, and I give it a solid 10 out of 10 rating.

The animation in this series is simply breathtaking. The bold, vivid colors and dynamic character designs create a vivid and immersive world that draws you in from the very first episode. This... This adaptation of Devilman is just, hard to explain. The art style is just magnificent. It's stunning and new and takes a lot of chances with it acting goofy (the running... god the running) and the character designs are on par with the aesthetic they're going for.

The music and sound design are like no other with a house party/EDM OP that just SLAPS! The side tracks are amazing as well like the ED track "Judgment" being one of my personal favorite anime songs ever. These songs have been produced marvelously and the sound design of the environment in the anime is superb.

The main ... characters and side characters have very good development for the anime only being 10 episodes. We get to see enough of all of them that nothing feels left out.

Overall, Devilman Crybaby is a great change of pace and a breathe of fresh demon air. It isn't at all what i had expected going into it, but I'm glad I did.

This anime had a unique art style.. similar to Japan Sinks 2020, so if you liked the art style there then you'll like this one.

I think some things didn't make sense. I guess it is up for the viewer's imagination/look at the implications and assume, but even at the end some things were unexplained and some characters' actions were just weird/did not align with the character's morals and did not have an explanation.

I did not expect this to be a sexual anime, as I had only heard this being talked about from friends and I watched it blindly. It had sexual content almost every ... episode--it being very explicit. There was a normal amount of gore for a psychological/thriller anime, so I wasn't too disturbed by that.

The story was very good however, and I really liked the character Ryo. He also made some good facial expressions lmao

Why do we run? There are a plethora of answers to that simple question. Many of us do it for passion; others do it for social status and attention; one could do it for self-improvement, and we could do it because we are running away from something undesirable. These decisions are purely individualized and running could also have a metaphorical expression exhibiting many of the things mentioned and more. Devilman Crybaby tackles many and I mean many reasons as to why they or we run, depending on which character is being focused on. The show describes many of the issues that surround the world today, ... that if taken to a certain point, humankind would be at the brink of extinction. The societal issues disclosed in the show are a reflection of the individual's preconceived notion against others, and the harm it bears with it: envy, discrimination, paranoia, loss, Christian theology, manipulation, and the cycle of change are one of many themes found throughout this 10 episode series. At a philosophical level, this show can tie in with ethics and morality; I saw a lot of parallels with the show Parasyte which also attempts to address such a complex topic in a comprehensible way so that the audience can be left pondering on life. The aesthetic of the show was on a whole other level, bizarre; I think that's the only way I can describe the art style. This show probably is one of my favorites if not my favorite art style in anime to date. The music was superb and they transition from playing such a joyful and pleasant song to a touching emotional piece contingent to the events occurring in the episode; the contrast in moods is seamless. The experience with the whole show was surreal. Surprisingly enough, for such a short series, it doesn't leave you wanting more; you find solace in the bittersweet ending because of the faith put forward in the characters. And granted, this show is not for everyone, for obvious reasons. Nonetheless, I strongly recommend this show to anyone, absolutely anyone; whether you are into violence/gore, intensity, simplicity, thematical expression, philosophy (not being pretentious), or just want to vibe, just watch this show, you won't regret it.

Devilman: Crybaby is a highly criticized anime. But I don't think people realize their plot or what they want to tell. Dementia is the mind-boggling genre of anime and Devilman: Crybaby does it very well.
Character analysis and analogies are very successful. It is also very nice that they benefit from rap in the anime. I really liked those parties. Also the other music used was absolutely great
I saw English parties being criticized, but when you adapt it to real life, it is quite normal to speak like that? Because it's not your own language. It is normal and not disturbing to speak this way. ...
The graphics are not bad, a different drawing style was used and I think it looks better because it is original.
I'm not arguing that the story is logical or wonderful, but the way it works is fine and I think they've successfully brought it to the part they want.
Finally, I think it is a successful anime that confuses the mind and emotions of the human, makes them think and stay in mind so you should watch without looking at the comments.

I can understand the bad rating this anime is getting, the story may seem bland or hopeless. Which is what it is supposed to be, hopeless.

Story: Sure, the story is fine. It is original it looks like and creative as well. A lot going on for 10 episodes, I would like ... to see it progress more slowly perhaps, I felt like it was rushed a little bit. I mean unless they rushed it for the purpose to show us the hopelessness of the story, then sure I would allow that. So I mean, without knowing the reason for the fast-paced story. I will rate this a 9 here. But I will give it a 10, if it was meant to show us the hopelessness, and the dread of the message.

Art/MESSAGE: To fully understand the message, symbolism, and story, in the end, we need to relate to the passion of the other characters and especially Satan in the end. We get to see what the anime is about; there is one thing mentioned most of the time in the anime, and that is love. Love in this anime is very important, it is supposed to be mysterious, it is supposed to be unknown in some way. This story tells you about love, how it is represented, and how it feels. But for the demons and especially Satan, they do not know what love is nor do they know how it feels. Satan throughout the story believes it does not exist, and so forth means sadness and suffering are nonexistent as well. This is mentioned seconds after the first episode starts.
"Love does not exist, there is no such thing, therefore there is no sadness."

But what does this mean for the characters? Were the hope, dedication, and the drive to stay alive completely useless? Was there any point or reason for all of this? The point of the story is supposed to be hopeless, it is supposed to be sad, it is supposed to be depressing. This is because you are human, and you, I assume are watching from a human viewpoint. This is how you are supposed to feel about the anime, you are supposed to be angry, and the cause for the bad ratings come from that you are angry, and do not understand the reason for all of this. This is because you have experienced love, but for the demons and Satan they have never experienced it in any way; so the question, "Was there any reason?" to a demon. Would be like asking what was before the big bang, the question itself makes no logical sense. But as you see at the end of the series, Satan for the first time learned to lose someone and experienced the loss of a loved one. He learned, to experience love, and for the first time the question "Was there any reason?" had a meaning, not a value or an answer to the question. But he felt the pain and sadness of every single soul he killed, in the end, he learned to love.

Animation: I was a bit cautious when starting to watch this, because of the animation...But I liked it, it is simple and nice. Nothing was bad with it at all, at least in my opinion.

Character: Characters were fine most of the time, there were some occasions which could be improved. The one where Akira gets the earring and remembers the message Miki got. Did not make much sense, unless it can be explained. If so then I think they should've, made a scene somehow where he was included to hear the message or something. There was not any complex character development either, the story is mostly focused on the art/MESSAGE.

Sound: Sure sound and music was great, fit the mood, made it emotional. I liked it at least, did not see anything wrong here. Also, I do not like rap music at all. But the rap music here fits well into the anime, liked it a lot. When it comes to emotion brought from the sub, they did a good job here (especially when it came to the father and his son, very realistic and emotional 10/10), also saw some people complaining about the English being cringy, not really a review anymore. That is ranting.

Enjoyment: This is the hardest part to rate because it depends on how you measure it. If the anime is supposed to make you feel sadness, anger, and frustration, how can I rate any enjoyment? If so, would I rate my enjoyment out of the art/MESSAGE? If so, then sure, I would give the art/MESSAGE 10/10

This gets a 10, this is again because of the message of the story. Yes, there could be stuff they could improve, but it would not really change much. The story and message dominate.

I went into Devilman Crybaby knowing absolutely nothing about it except that it's apparently quite good (of so what I heard among the grapevines). It exceeded all my expectations and was frankly, brilliant.

The story was great, I've seen some reviews saying that the story was awful, it didn't make any sense, was so bad etc. But me personally I didn't see anything wrong with it. I thought the story made sense and everything strung together nicely. I found the premise really interesting and thought the ... execution was really well done. I saw a review say that the anime "rely so heavily on sex and gore" and I disagree. I think sometimes we are not use to seeing such heavy sex and gore in anime (especially mainstream and popular series). I certainly didn't see it coming myself and personally didn't have any problems with it probably because I'm use to that kinda thing, but I thought that the sex and gore didn't take away from the story much.

I loved the art style and found some scenes really beautiful. The soundtrack was dope (I added a few of the songs to my playlist already). Again from the same review I mentioned earlier, they said that the English dialogue was cringey and unnecessary. I personally thought the English dialogue was fine and it was refreshing to see that they didn't just speak in Japanese when they were meant to be speaking English and merely translate it.
Characters were interesting and fun to watch. They were complex and I really felt myself becoming attached to and becoming invested in them.

I know that Devilman Crybaby might be a slap in the face for some people who are not used to how should I say "strange" anime but I say to just give it a shot. It's short, only 10 episodes long, it's a completely unique experience and I applaud it greatly.

A Quick Review:
I've seen VERY mixed reviews for this show.
While it is very sexual, gory and has a very unorthodox story, there is a rather ambiguous but powerful underlying theme and narrative, which I took away as 'humanity will be its own downfall' though as said earier, its very open to interpretation

The music was great in my opinion.

The art style I found nice as well. It wasn't as well polished which helped set up the environment. Kind of gave me Ping Pong: the Animation vibes, which is to be expected since both have the same directer and all.

While there were some characters I liked there ... were some that I didn't but that didnt really take away my enjoyment.

I went into this not knowing a single thing about it but in the end it left me speechless and kind of changed my view of the world as cliche as that sound.
A truly harrowing show.
