Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso

It made me cry. Ugly cry to be honest. For me, that means it's something special.

It's beatiful, fun, sad, tragic all at the same time.

The story is truely tragic. Where you expect things to be fine, they aren't. And when things begin to get depressing, it gives you a little pick up before pushing you back down. Certainly not for those that are either sensitive, or are going through some stuff IRL. It's that good.

The sound is heavenly. Granted you'd expect as much, considering the two main characters are musicians. Still however, pieces are well tuned for the scenes the show presents. It mixes ... classical pieces and pieces made by the show's composer, Masaru Yokoyama. What results are beautiful pieces that melt your heart away.

The characters are fantasic. The main duo of Kousei and Kaori are two opposites that when merged together make for a poetic narrative. Tsubaki acts as a third wheel, but still has her own qualities and quirks that don't steal the show, but certainly adds to it. Frankly however, I could do with less of Ryouta. Bone headed, stupid, and personally somewhat annoying.

The art style. Well it almost turned me off. The way the eyes are presented are...unique. I've never before seen it. You get used to it after a couple of episodes, but apart from that the scenery, the smooth animation and attention to detail more than makes up for that little niggle. Where the art really comes toegether is during the performances. I'm sure the animators both loved and hated making the piano scenes, as the effort put into those sections is crazy.

It's a romance, without really being one. That's what I like. Romance at a distance. However it will leave a hole in your heart, that's for sure. There is nothing more tragic for me than incomplete stories, and this will give you the biggest one I've yet to witness. You'll both love and hate the show in the end. I might even get into playing piano, simply to perform the show's own pieces as an homage. But enough of this, I'm going back to listening to the OST......

This is my first review and it's about Shigatsu Wa Kimi No Uso (Your lie In April). This show is a pretty good drama/music series mixed with some romance and a bit of comedy.

Story-9
The plot really knows how to change without having any issues. The only problem I had with the story is that we never knew at the end what happened to Kousei and Tsubaki, I hope it will be clarified.

Art-10
A-1 Pictures suddenly made an anime where the art style is original and so well done. And the animation... The animation for most of the anime is georgous and always shows us ... the hidden beauty behind the show. I think 10 is the only rating that fit the art quality of Shigatsu.

Sound-10
Oh dear Feelsgatsu, how can you have such beautiful OST's. I just can't get over it, emotional ost that will make you tear everytimes, for sure. Probably one of the best emotional ost of all time. Also, there are a lot of classical songs, like mainly songs from Chopin and Beethoven and maybe some more classical music artist.

Characters-9
I put a 9 because I felt like there were a lot of characters that were either rushed or randomly apeared for no logical reason. Even though, this show has great characters that are well developped and you can really understand them and like them easily.

Enjoyment-10
I loved this series from the beggining from the end and never got tired of this show. The first half is more about the music part and the romance but the second half really throw you an emotional explosion. Some says that the ending was bad, but for me, this ending was one amazing ending that concluded correctly and showed us a lot of information with flawless animation. Also, there is an OVA coming out so this must clarify things for the ones who disliked the ending,

Overall-10
Yes, 10. This series really deserve a 10 and this is probably one of the best drama anime and of course the best music anime (in my opinion). Thanks for reading my review on Shigatsu Wa Kimi No Uso and I hope you liked it.

Normally, when people say that an anime has split the community between GOAT proselytizers and absolute haters, you'd think it would be either, a.) a dark, chock-full of symbolism niche show like Evangelion, or b.) something massively popular like Sword Art Online.

Out of all the recent anime out there, I honestly didn't think that I'd find myself doing a review for this one. I'm honestly rather saddened that somehow, this anime has so thoroughly polarized some portions of the anime community.

I hope you don't mind if I add my two cents to the discussion, but honestly, at times, it feels like I'm taking a knife ... to the gunfight. (Don't worry, I've got a TL;DR version down there). If you only want to know whether I think you should watch it, then I'll just say it right now: Yes.

STORY: 8/10

"Oh boy," the more jaded ones among you start, "yet another high school setting."

"Uh, correction," the pedantic fan mutters, "they're in junior high."

Admittedly, on paper, the setting of Your Lie in April (hereby referred to as YLIA), is certainly nothing unique. Oh come on, a romance? A rom-com at that? *And* they meet in spring? Come on man, the title itself "Your Lie in April" betrays its obvious intentions, and to some extent the plot (I'll stop right there, we're veering into spoiler territory.)

To this, I will already make a concession to the anime's detractors: yes, it does, indeed, bring nothing new to the table. It is cliche as it gets at times (as one character does put it), right down to the typical love triangle. Heck, the comedic timing is off a good proportion of the time, and the melodrama can be downright uncomfortable at times, to the point of dragging us, the viewer, along.

I honestly wasn't expecting much from the show when I first saw it. I really thought it was going to be a run-of-the-mill rom-com, and that I would really just stick around for the music.

What then to me exonerates this series at least a bit to warrant its 7/10? Well, a cliche, when well-executed, still makes for good storytelling, and YLIA does tell a heartfelt story quite well.

What YLIA succeeds in is in giving us a comforting little soup, which is neither too experimental, nor too bland, but with enough spice to give its own distinct flavor. I could go on in-depth about everything in this show, but really, I do want to make this review for someone who knows nothing about this anime.

The drama, while excessive at times, is really nothing out of place for the genre. And that's good, because it's really the drama that runs this show. This is when it shines, when it waxes poetry, which, while, you know, dramatic, is sincere and unpretentious, but not to the point of dumb simplicity. The writing, I must say, while nothing particularly exceptional, especially if you're well-versed in poetry, is still well above many of today's anime, and it hits home when it needs to. I never felt like it was trying so hard to jerk a tear out of me with sad situations, but rather, building up the tension and releasing it on cue.

You know, as good dramas are wont to do.

YLIA, while tackling many themes like child abuse, competition and the nature of classical music, it is at its heart a simple love story. A love story between two people at first glance, but also the story of one's love and loss with something intangible: music. And does it deliver on its love story? Yes. One thing I can respect, even among the most cliched animes is not trying to be something it's not (something I can't say about the comedic timing). It doesn't stray from the main plot and when it does, it's for a purpose. YLIA executes a meaningful romance rather well and while there are lapses in writing and logic, you'll find yourself brushing them off as you get invested in the story.

It's a nice healing story that I feel many can relate to. Being a pianist when I was younger, as well as having rocky relations with my mother, this anime motivated me, or at least made me think about doing something about it. That's one gauge of a good show: it makes you do things.

That's why I can't get why some would go out of their way to trash this particular anime. It's something for the heart, not some failed cerebral exercise. A lack of enjoyment on this series is really a matter of taste, and there's nothing wrong with that. There were genuinely some moments I felt i was supposed to relate to that fell flat, either because of a lapse in writing, or that I simply could not make a parallel to my own life.

ART: 9/10

I'm not a visual person, so I'm really not going to speak at length about this. What I can say however, is that there really isn't anything about the art that should bother you.

A-1 Pictures has pretty high production standards, and here it shows. The background stills have a really nice feel to them and are very vivid. When they say it's springtime, they mean it: it's bright, cherry blossoms are blooming, petals elegantly floating through the air. Just look at the first few seconds of the first episode to see what I mean. The palette in general is very pleasing.

The animation overall is solid. The concert scenes probably have the best animation of piano playing I've seen in an anime.

There are however some lapses wherein the animators just used stills, or instead using chibi-style animations. It's nothing too jarring though.

SOUND: 10/10

I'll say this right now: if you like classical music, even if you don't find any merit in the plot or whatever else I'll write in the review, stay for the music.

What distinguishes this series to me from other music-based animes like Nodame Cantabile and Sakamichi no Apollon (they're both really good, watch them too) is how the character development and story is reliant and centered on the music. The music is not just an avenue for the rest of the story to progress: the music is an intrinsic part of it. I can imagine other music-based series without the music and the story would remain intact, but here, the idea is unfathomable, and that's not a bad thing, because what YLIA does is that it capitalizes on one of its key elements to great effect.

The first opening, Hikaru Nara, is simply amazing, and two months after the finale I still find myself humming it every now and then.

The other opening and endings are good as well, and trust me, in time, they'll grow on you.

This is a music anime, come on, don't skip the OP and ED!

The OST itself and its selection of classical music is exceptional as well. As Kousei struggles with not being able to hear his own music, the first two pieces we hear are from Beethoven. Rather fitting, as his backstory is similar to Kousei's: forced into piano-playing and later in time, desperately struggled to hear his own music. All the pieces are from the Romantic period which is appropriate for reasons that should be obvious enough. As the story progresses and its tone changes, so does the music, and though there are no lyrics, the feeling is tangible. Such is the beauty of classical music.

The insert songs are also very nice, and though original, are based off some of the classical music played in the anime, which is a nice touch.

Remember, this is an anime that is to be heard, as much as it is to be seen.

CHARACTER: 7/10

Here is what has been dubbed one of the series' weak points. The main characters at first glance are really cookie-cutter tropes: the brooding protagonist, the free-spirited love interest, the longtime tsundere childhood friend, as well as the friendly playboy. Boy, are we original.

The show however does give ample time, through flashbacks and other various means of visual aids, for the viewer to gain at least some insight to the motivations of each of these four characters. Though, one does remain mysterious and enigmatic until almost the end, and I wish this wasn't so, and the anime would have been better off at least hinting some of the characters' motivations earlier on. It's a bit of a gripe that brings down the series, but nothing so serious as to sabotage it.

Kousei in particular gets the lion's share of character development, seeing him struggle through his depression and trauma as well as coming to terms with his past. The story is told from his perspective, and the show wastes no time explaining Kousei's thoughts through monologues. We also see his development in terms of the people around him, whether it be a passing remark by a friend or an astute observation by an old acquaintance. The protagonist is fleshed out and there's really not much to complain about here.

While the series does try to do its best in fleshing out many of the side characters, the simple fact is that it didn't get all the bases covered. Kousei's two competitors, while we are given some insight into their history with Kousei, never really evolve into something more than competitors or colleagues in music. Their underlying motives also seem rather immature and over-the-top, which while somewhat realistic, can cause a bit of a dissonance when trying to think objectively about the series. There just wasn't enough screentime for some of the side characters, or rather, it just wasn't used as well as it could have been.

ENJOYMENT: 9/10

I thoroughly enjoyed this series despite its flaws.

This is the kind of series that you'll get carried away in, ups and downs and all. It will make you cry, maybe laugh a little bit, and you'll find yourself invested in the show more than you thought it would.

Much of my enjoyment, admittedly, stems from my relatively low expectations when I came into this show. I was expecting much less, it delivered, and despite its flaws, I wasn't disappointed.

Again, sometimes, there are moments when I just couldn't connect with the show, but overall it was a most pleasant experience.

I understand that the appeal of this series however isn't universal, and that's absolutely understandable. However, as I will again say, this isn't a cerebral experience meant to be coldly analyzed and combed over.

It's just a tale, a story, flawed as it may be, which for the most part does what it's supposed to do: ensnare and engross an audience of watchers willing to be carried away.

TL;DR:

Your Lie in April is a pleasant, enjoyable series which despite its shortcomings and lapses in its writing still delivers a great visual and auditory experience which most people can appreciate and relate to.

A powerful, and captivating tale told through Anime that is targeted at the audience of anybody who has ever endured personal hardship. Together, "Your Lie in April" brings story, artwork, sound, and experiences that can be enjoyed unlike any other. Character development is absolutely phenomenal, bringing together crucial experiences and memories from the past, no character leaves you with a sense of wonder or confusion.

Though, not every individual may be able to enjoy or appreciate this tale due to their own personal experiences, or blocks upon their heart I can wholeheartedly assure each and everybody who lays eyes upon this sole review in the sea ... of hundreds You will be taken for a journey. With an open heart, with an open mind.. The music, the wonder the sensations will course through every fiber of your very existence. Memories once forgotten will be reanimated before you. The very things which hold you back, the excuses you create to hide inside of your shell will be thoroughly obliterated with every note struck during the course of this Anime.

With an amazing soundtrack, the most beautiful of artwork, and a clear story from start to the very last episode I assure you, this Anime is worthy of an attempt to watch, at least from the eyes, from the ears and the heart of this individual who is doing his absolute best to provide you with the sense of wonder that this Anime has instilled upon him through a single review on a story of a lie that was told in April.

Oh god I just finished this series minutes ago and the emotions just won't go away. This is a series that will grip you by the heart and just tighten its grip more and more. First of all the story is very beautiful. The way the mix the music aspects with the rest of the series works so well. The music performances made me feel like I was actually there watching it in person. The cast was wonderful, I loved them all. I feel they gave a good amount of character development to each of them to. A lot of the time, they'll throw ... in these characters in the main cast who you don't really find out much about. But here most of the characters get at least a bit of time in the spot light while still not getting in the way of the main story. The side plots actually worked in harmony with the main plot. The visuals are stunning as is the sound track. This is a piece of art in the anime world and I feel everyone needs to see it at some point.

"Will you ever forget?"

The way they show how to convey emotions through music, and Arima's journey to being able to healthily express what words cannot say, is simply poetic. Not to mention that I love the mix of piano and violin. In fact, that's how I found out about this series, because Spotify recommended one of its songs to me.

At times it felt a bit long and it's not exactly the kind of story that captivates me the most. I feel that sometimes they go around in circles with drama and romance, but maybe I see it that way because I'm not used to the ... genre.

The work of any artist goes beyond technique and theory. Their true mission is to inspire and speak that language that transcends reason.

This anime is an invitation to learn to see the unforgettable among the most trivial. It encourages us to live life without reproaches. It really moved me.

La manera en la que muestran cómo transmitir las emociones a través de la música, y el camino de Arima hasta poder expresar sanamente lo que las palabras no pueden decir, es simplemente poético. Sin mencionar que me encanta la mezcla de piano y violín. De hecho así fue como conocí esta serie, porque spotify me recomendó una de sus canciones.

Por momentos se me hizo un poco larga y no es exactamente el tipo de historia que más me atrapa. Siento que a veces dan vueltas de más con el drama y el romance pero quizás lo veo de esa manera porque no estoy acostumbrado al género.

La labor de cualquier artista va más allá de la técnica y la teoría. Su verdadera misión es inspirar y hablar ese idioma que trasciende la razón.

I have watched a lot of anime, and the reason I watch anime is to find gems like Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso. I've never been big on classical music; not to say that I don't like it, I just wouldn't sit down and listen to it on my own. Yet when I watched this anime I got chills every time they would play classical music. The synergy the anime has with the music is gorgeous and it literally took my breath away. You will cry. You will laugh. When it's over you'll feel like a part of you is missing. It's hard to find ... many anime that affect people like this, but if you want to watch something that you will think back on and get chills, this is it. If you want something that you will look up youtube videos for and tear up, this is it.

This anime is truly worth your time and I recommend highly.

As a low tier musician, not as yer best friend, I implore you to watch Shigatsuwa Kimi no Uso. I really think you will like this and relate somewhat to it. Also, do me a favor and watch it with headphones, exclusively.

I am only 2 eps in and the amount of times this has broken my generic anime mold is over 15, and I love it. Great writing, no cliche crap w/ the exception of the ... comedy style. Ahhahha so gud.


EDIT: This show is so good that it actually exhausts me to watch it, even on my numbing meds, and not just from the laughs like SYD, but because it is such an amazing creation. 11 eps in now.

Just finished it. All I can coherently think about is what I just experienced is "beautiful". The story, music, execution. All of it. Beautiful. 29 of 30. What I just experienced, I can only failingly describe as beautiful, yet as you know words aren't enough to express an emotion.


I...It...It honestly is leagues ahead of Madoka, and story wise is deeper than Bebop. Its soundtrack is better than Sakamichi no Apollon, and it takes you on an amazing, emotional, melodic journey, equal or greater in range to Lagann.

So I wanted to see what the fuss was about on why people cried so much from this anime and I recently just started. Let me just say, I'm on ep 4 and I'm already tearing up holy....not because it's sad, but because it's just so beautiful (cheesy I know). The story-line, the music, the feelings you get, even the animation itself is just so nice. I love the transition between the happy colorful world to the sad black and white world view. The interactions between each character is just really well-done. I don't think I'll be prepared to watch the last few episodes. I ... heard from people that it was just complete waterworks for them the entire episode, some even cried for 3 days after the anime.
I'm pretty scared because I don't to cry haha but at the same time I'm happy I made the choice to start watching this anime.

I know I should be writing a review after I've seen it but this anime is just making me wanting to write one already.

Honestly i can't say i have been impressed. The anime itself has beautiful art and a decent setting but the execution was just lacking.

The music and sound was fair, but i not had a moment where it gave me goosebumps, it was just there and nothing more.

The anime itself was nothing amazing, nor innovative, there are other anime of this genre that are more inspiring and accomplish more.

Towards the middle of the season, the episodes get long and boring, i couldn't watch it in one go since it wasn't all consuming like some other titles.

Personally i think its alright, but not as great as advertised.

(My first review!) Honestly, I found this anime very slow-paced. However, as the rates suggest, this was AMAZING. If you've ever seen Inu X Boku SS, where they pull that stunt on you at the end, THIS is that kind of anime.
The art is AMAZING, along with the music! You get to watch as the characters change throughout the episodes, and altogether is a must-watch. If you love music, then trust me, this will inspire you to do better. You can get a lot of quotes and things to learn about life from this anime, I kid you not. BUT YES. Watch ... it if you have the time- remind you, it's 22 episodes. And you may lose interest, but the end is worth it.

That's the word that describes this amazing anime. It's such a touching story, you get to know and like every single character that are presented to you. You can feel their fears and know their tastes. They were able to condense such deep stories into only 22 episodes.

This is a MUST WATCH for any anime fan. The animation is outstanding, the soundtrack is beyond comparations - which should be this way, since it's an anime about music. I loved the four op and endings that the show has.
Actually, all the musics in the anime are incredible, real ... classics played with real maestry and coordination with the animation. Even from a screen, you feel as if you were there at the concert.
This is not a story just about a teenager romance, is far more than just this.
I don't know if I'd be able to write this when I finished it, because I couldn't stop crying. Seriously, this made me cry through 3 days.
I fell in love with everyone here, specially Kaori. She's such an extraordinary person, she changed so many lives.
It is one of my favorites shows of all time.

"you exist inside spring"

I am a fan of classical music and i had learned the piano before so the anime and manga were pretty interesting to me. there is something about that anime that really dragged me into the story. Kousei's mental pain was really heart striking and i can never hate him if he really can't play the piano back like he did before.

I highly recommend this anime for those people who believes being a prodigy is not something you can for your entire life. That at some point, you will succumb down to your lowest trough yet there are still people who would still ... adore you despite your failures-- even up to the point of making it a death wish.

It is a nice anime and manga but prepare your heart into it because this story is really something.

"Your Lie In April" Is An Anime About Love, Music, And A lot Of Depression. If You Ever Feel Depress ... For "Your Lie In April" So Don't Worry. You Are Not Alone. We All Are The Same.

If I'm Going To Describe The Plot So, The Main Character Arima Kousei Is A Pianist But For Some Reason, He Can't Hear His Own Piano Note's. As A Result, He Stops Playing the Piano. So One Day He Met A Violinist Girl Named Miyazono Kaori. So Kaori Want That Arima to Play the Piano Again So She Became Friend With Arima.
So You Can Say That This Is The Main Theme Of This Anime.

The Soundtracks Of This Anime Is Gorgeous. Every Singal Moment Of This Anime Become Too Dispresional Because Of The Soundtracks. However, The Creators Tried To Put Some Funny Seen's To Light The Environment But They Were Not Enough.

The Animation Of This Anime Is A little Bit Different From Other Anime. The Character Design Is Good But Their Eyes Were Unusually Bigger Than Other Anime. But It's Not A Big Problem Cause Compared To "Clannad" It's Nothing.

Overall The Wole Anime Was SOOOOOOO AMAZING. And To Be Honest I Was In Depression Without Any Reason For Almost One Month After Watching This Anime. So My Recomandesion Is That If You Are A Cry Baby So Don't Take This Anime Seriously And Don't Do Something Stupid.

I have never really enjoyed slice of life anime, so I'm not really sure what compelled me to watch this, but damn am I glad that I did. I kept hearing people rave about it and kept wondering "what could be so great about a sappy music anime". I watched this in one day just because I had to know what would happen. The art is also so beautiful and brings the music and emotions to life in an amazing way. I would recommend this to anyone no matter the age or feelings about slice of life. It is the kind of anime that will ... change your life especially if you like music. I will remember this anime for a very long time.

Story 8: I am reminded again that a lot happens in 22 episodes. I was never bored while watching this mostly because I felt that if I turned away for a couple of seconds I would miss something important.

Art 9: Beautiful art that perfectly embodies the story. It also brings the music and story to life. It is not the cleanest, or most detailed art I have ever seen but is perfect for this anime.

Sound 9: Expresses so much emotion and completes this anime.

Character 7: Good, but not as great as great other anime that I have watched. I would have liked to know more about some of the side characters, however, that would have been hard to express in the 22 episodes.

Enjoyment 8: I really enjoyed this anime and loved watching the characters grow and express their emotions.

Overall 8: Realy is a great anime overall and I would definitely watch it with my family.

I tried watching the first episode of this a few times, but just didn't think I would get into it and kept dropping it. One of the times I went to watch it because of the amount of recommendations I kept getting for it, I just decided to keep going for a few episodes and give it a chance. When I tell you that this show drew me in so unexpectedly, it literally captivated my attention. The characters emotions were just so raw and amazing. It really knew how to stir them up in you. The art style was really beautiful and really captured the ... atmosphere throughout the show. It develops such a strong backstory and ending that leaves you speechless. I'm so glad to have experienced watching this show and I highly recommend that you do too, especially if you like romances, passion, and shows that will make you cry. It's sooo good.

This anime is excellent, it is the best I have ever seen in my life. The ost is brilliant, the characters are really good, and the life that they have is also quite sad, each one has personal problems that are dealt with throughout the anime, Kousei, Tsubaki, Kaori, Emi, Watari, etc...
This anime was not just anime. It was art, it was a masterpiece.
It's so artistic to the point where I don't even consider this as a romance anime that would be too straight forward.
This anime made my heart melt, I'm trying to explain how amazing it was but I have no more words to ... describe it.

Honestly one of the most beautiful series i've ever watched, with amazing characters and a heartbreaking story arc, with the two last episodes having me balling my eyes out. And how could i go so long with out mentioning the soundtrack, with magicly played classical pieces, helping you as the viewer really get into the pianist head, with such feelings as: letting go, proving urself, anger or pride and loneliness. Without question in my top three, i may not have the most experience in anime but this is really a masterpiece, with beauty in every second. this anime i thoroughly enjoyed and would recommend ... to any one.

This is a completely average show. Unless you are into exactly what this show offers you wont be impressed.
The characters might have more to them than meets they eye at first, but it's hard to sympathise with them because of all the unnatural dialouge. It's common for Japanese people to point things out, but this is just lazy directing. Eventually you will feel something, but that's just because you are bombarded with SADNESS and RELATABLE PAIN. Which is not a good as actually relatable characters imo.

Great directors can tell you everything you need to know in a scene without a spoken word. In this show ... they do tell you what you need to know through the scenes, but then the characters over-emphasize what the viewer already pieced together and it feels like they don't expect you to understand a simple connection like "father says he's going away, angry child => police looking at a corpse, mortified child". Everyone looking at a scene like that would understand that the father died and that the child feels responsible or regrettful over the last thing he said to his father. But then someone narrates themselves and says "that's right, my father died, and the last thing i, [the characters name], told him to die. And then he died. My father is dead. He is dead. My father. Just so you know."

This show points out the obvious way too much, and it's full of magic fixes like "i'm depressed" "hey, i'm here" "oh shit i'm ok now".
Something like this can work and be a really fantastic trope if handeled properly, but expect to see the same thing every other episode, and expect characters to just SUDDENLY be different. The catalyst apparently being the most simple character ever and three (3) words of dialouge. THere is no buildup of the character-change. It just happens out of nowhere.

Aside from the dialouge being intended for children, the art and sound are ok. It's just that when i watched this show i was constantly thinking of better shows which handle the same material this show does. So i'm gonna list a few.

Nodame Cantabile for music lovestory but with REAL CHARACTERS, altough they don't have teeth. 3-gatsu no Lion for a depressed boy genius who struggles. Ano Hi Mita Hana for sad lovestory. Toradora for bittersweet lovestory. Kokoro Connect for INTERESTING lovestory. Mawaru Penguindrum for spoiler. Katanagatari for spolier.

Only watch this if you are a sucker for lovestories with some pain. Or if you are okay with average okay shows and aren't spoiled like me. If you are looking for cremé de la cremé then this is a skip.
