The Utawarerumono DVD Specials take a look on the lighter side of the series, somewhere in the middle when the situation was much more peaceful. These four mini-episodes, each from 6 to 10 minutes long, are hilarious. I thought the first, third and fourth were slightly funnier than the second one, but the second one was still pretty funny.
It must be said that there is a need to watch the first special before the second, and the third before the fourth (which I cannot find a subbed version of). Even so, the fourth special is not all to hard to follow even without subs. The
video says it all.
The art is more or less the same as the original series, with some added humorous expressions of all varieties. The specials also try to get just about every main character into it; Karura, Kurou, all the bad guys, and Tusukuru (well of course, she's dead) do not necessarily appear. Karura will be briefly shown though.
Overall, I highly recommend watching these if you have passed the halfway point of the series or finished it. Watching these specials before watching the original series is something that should not be done, or you will be sitting and watching this thinking, "Who the heck are these people?" Basically, don't watch this until you have seen Touka (who plays a big part in Specials 3 and 4). Enjoy!
set during one of those rare times of peace these episodes are purely for entertainment and lend nothing to the general plot of the story. however... they are very entertaining and any fan of the series wll enjoy them greatly.
all of them are tied together in sequential order and so must be viewed in said order to fully understand the events taking place.
as these are special episodes no attempt is made to introduce any of the characters. that being said if you are reading this and havent seen/finished the anime...TURN BACK NOW! otherwise you will find yourself scratching your head and wondering
who certain characters are.
(I really do not know what happened with my original posting...)
These Specials are a really nice relief from the main series, especially due its dramatic last episodes, and its emotion filled end. It lifts us as we watch our now beloved characters in some unique scenarios.
It depicts some really funny moments involving the daily lives of the main characters.
Especially funny are the Touka centered episodes...I laughed a lot watching them, especiall because Touka is one of my favorite characters.
I highly recommend watching them...
(...and I hope this time my review does not disappear -_-)
If you like ecchi, pointless still shots, and moments such as a tiger being SO humorously tickled, then this is for you. This is not humorous. There is no wit, there is not a moment of humor, just one failure after another.
The story of each is particularly bad, each with a premise of HIJINKS, ZOINKS! Of course they are all as frivolous as possible and utterly asinine.
I penalized the art heavily for the still shots, the bad expressions, the bad comedy art in general. The ecchi too, of course.
The sound is really obnoxious with the endings, mostly, with drawn out, really dramatic music as something
plays out (either an unnecessary repeat or something actually slightly different but also obnoxious and not dramatic).
So, if you dislike the things that I mentioned, I hope you know that this is NOT for you and that you do NOT need to watch (in fact, I have been writing this through the whole time to distract myself from how awful it is). Please, stay away if you are a person who does not like slice of life.
