New Interest Stack
Interest StacksAnime with great worldbuilding, or the development of the fantastical environment and world! None of these anime take place in what you would call 'our universe', rather taking place in an alternative universe or fantasy/ sci-fi setting with amazingly well-tailored and fitting details in technologies and architecture that makes every world unique. Anime with less than 150k members (in fact, most of them have less than 100k members) that are well rated and deserve to be watched by many more people. This list is dedicated to Pre-2000s anime that has a visually impactful animation, regardless of the year they release. Every animated media that has been made has the idea to tell a story and to express a feeling on the watcher. But then, there are some series which has a particular way to evocate their sentiments and they use different tools to do that. Thought provoking writing, displaying the characters' internal monologues, their struggles and fears, using particular cinematographic angles and by blending contrasting styles of animation, coloring and highly symbolical and metaphorical imagery - these are some of the many hallmarks signifying the said animation has psychological themes, and that it is avant-garde in it's approach. This method of expression is not limited to any genre, as well. This is a part of a series of stacks that are about artistic tendencies in anime (and that border the fine line between sophisticated and pretentious). "Elitist" has been a very generic and broad term to generalise many types of not-so-mainstream or "deep" anime, so this list is very diverse and it's criteria are not always clear cut and objective. Nonetheless I try to provide a proper explanation for why each entry is included. Generally speaking these are shows that fit one OR more of these adjectives: Experimental, Avant-Garde, Psychological, Philosophical, Obscure, Classic, Critically Acclaimed, Artsy, Old, etc... List of anime for "elitist". These anime have been considered as "deep" animations by various critics and analysts. some nights you just want to not be ok. when you can relate to that, these series are for you Although none of these anime have a tag/theme that denotes them as psychological, they all use cinematographic tactics often seen in psychological media to explore different aspects of the human condition and tackle atypical and philosophical topics. Very few stories can craft a setting that leaves a memorable impression, in fantasy fiction creators tend to fall back on safe and familiar settings which to me is always a missed opportunity in a story. These are anime that go above and beyond to envision and breathe life into unique and inspired worlds. A significant artistic effort is put into the locations, technology, vehicles, clothing, props, and architecture of these anime and have been masterfully crafted to facilitate these stories. Avoided a bit of the really obvious ones (The Big 3 and Death Note) and some that were really similar to something already present on this list. These are anime I recommend you not miss out on in your lifetime. Anime made by the first generation of anime fans. This inhumanly derivative, formulaic, escapist, consumerist and incestuous genre is one of my guilty pleasures, and in my journey through it I have found some good stuff. Here are shows which either execute the classic isekai tropes well and simply have quality, or shows that may not be the best, but which at least have an interesting execution of the isekai concept that subverts expectations or at least isn't so derivative, generic or mediocre as others. |
