Vibes. Absolute vibes.

I am attempting to curate the definitive catalog of THE most 𝓐𝓔𝓢𝓣𝓗𝓔𝓣𝓘𝓒 anime, found exclusively between the 80s and 90s!

Many millennials, Gen Z, or younger experience a 'longing' (often known as "anemoia") for the pre-internet world, when VHS tapes enveloped film in a comforting saturation, when stereos emitted synthpop, and when the warm sun caused the rippling seas to glisten just that much more.

This Interest Stack is curated to support members in finding entries which share highly specific or niche interests: that is: 80s-90s anime that boast a retro "aesthetic" prowess: an art style or color palette that evoke "vibes", "atmosphere", "ambiance", or "nostalgia".

These anime are brimming with screenshotable frames and GIF-worthy animations to suit any YouTube lo-fi mixtape, playlist of beats to study to, Pinterest feeds, or cater to anyone's longing for an ethereal bygone era.

“Looking at still images from the blu-ray of this anime makes me want to cry. People throw around the word ‘aesthetic’—they throw is around a LOT—especially when talking about old anime on VHS; but, I have never seen Shounan Bakusouzoku talked about.” — Kenny Lauderdale

Suggestions welcomed!

1990s, 1990's, 90s, 90's

1980s, 1980's, 80s, 80's

P.S. I really tried not to use the word "vaporwave". But yeah. That's pretty much what this stack is.

Fumi Hirano is one of the most popular Seiyuu of the 1980s. I was just thinking that she actually voiced a lot of Princesses

List of anime that contributed to the bishoujo boom (commonly referred to as the lolicon boom) of the late 70s and early 80s, or were made in the wake of it.

I'll be leaving off porn OVAs like Cream Lemon and Lolita Anime as to not restrict this list's visibility, but please do keep in mind the importance of these titles as well.

Canal 5 is a Mexican free-to-air television network owned by TelevisaUnivision. It traces its origins to the foundation of Channel 5 in Mexico City in 1952 (also known by its identification code XHGC-TDT). Canal 5's program lineup is generally targeted at a younger audience and includes cartoons, foreign series and movies, along with a limited number of sporting events such as NFL games, boxing, the FIFA World Cup and, historically, the Olympic Games.

Canal 5 is mainly aimed at children and youth audiences, although in late hours it usually includes a more general concept with television series and reality shows. Over the decades among its programming, it includes many series purchased from networks such as Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network, among others; while the series aimed at the general public often come from Paramount Network, Fox Broadcasting Company, Warner Bros. (now known as Warner Bros. Discovery), Sony Group Corporation, ViacomCBS (now Paramount Global), MTV, NBCUniversal, Lionsgate, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer among others. The channel also broadcasts series produced by the company TelevisaUnivision, which owns the channel. In programming, its main national competitor in open television has historically been Azteca 7 of TV Azteca.

Rumiko Takahashi, The Manga Queen, is a Mangaka born in 1957 that in 1978 started her career in the pages of Weekly Shounen Sunday, and it's been a constant succes from then. Since there has been too much series from then people tends to don't know what to watch first, and how to watch it.
So i'm here to help you, when you finish reding this guide you'll have the entire data you need to know what to do.

My personal recommendation, start watching Maison Ikkoku, it's her best work. The best way to get to know an author is to start with their best work.

List of animated series by Studio Pierrot in the magical girl genre. This list contains important works that share certain common characteristics and that marked a before and after in the magical girl genre.

Note #01: Urusei Yatsura is a Magical Girlfriends series, which although it comes from the same origin as magical girls, many do not consider it one, personally, I DO consider Urusei Yatsura a magical girl series since Lum has special powers, which is a central characteristic of magical girls. Ten, Lum's cousin, fulfills a similar function to that of magical pets in other series. The series itself is from the Magical Girls subgenre, "magical girlfriends", the girls usually have special abilities and are involved in romantic relationships with normal characters, Lum fits perfectly into this description, being Ataru's alien girlfriend with magical powers that fit the characteristics of a magical girl. Although "Urusei Yatsura" is primarily a comedy, there are episodes that touch on themes of self-improvement, friendship, and growth, which are central to many magical girl stories. That's why I, PERSONALLY, put it on this list as a magical girl series.

Note #02: "Tokyo Mew Mew" and "Sugar Sugar Rune" are not considered part of this list since they were born from a manga and not as an original idea. But, personally, I like to believe that they are part of this list.

A basic recommendation of anime classics starting from the important year 1963 when Astro Boy debuted. Only one anime per franchise allowed, and selection is partly based on watchability, so you can get right into what seems interesting.

This is part 2 of 5, it covers 1975–1986.

Part 1 (1963–1974): https://myanimelist.net/stacks/57261
Part 3 (1987–1998): https://myanimelist.net/stacks/57268
Part 4 (1999–2010): https://myanimelist.net/stacks/57273
Part 5 (2011–2022): https://myanimelist.net/stacks/57279

During this parts period mecha reigned supreme. At the same time moe was being formed leading to moe, ecchi, and ero tropes still in use today. This parts stand-out year for me is 1983 (Captain Tsubasa, Barefoot Gen, Votoms, Cat's Eye, Golgo 13, Dunbine, Creamy Mami, Kinnikuman, Stop! Hibari-kun!, Igano Kabamaru, Lady Georgie, Dallos)

Normal folk living life in extraordinary circumstances.

This can be:

1. Characters subjected to odd circumstances out of the blue
2. Characters who are already living an odd life

The only caveat is that there's some form of sci-fi/fantasy element to the story.

~part 2 coming~
