What is a manly anime? It may be hard to define them at first glance. Rather than a textbook definition, it's more of a specific "vibe". You can feel when you're watching one of them.

One might associate them with a specific artstyle, starring adult male characters with a muscular build and detailed facial features, and while that is definitely a common trend, it's not necessarily a requisite.

To me, a manly series is one where the characters represent the ideals of manhood. They have an unbreakable determination, they protect their loved ones and are willing to risk their own lives for what they believe in, to achieve their dreams, or for a better future. And while the majority are battle oriented, they might not even need to throw a punch to be considered manly, sometimes their strong will speaks for themselves.

These characteristics apply to many other series, but a manly anime just hits different. You look at them and think "that's what a man would do".

This is not a comprehensive list, but rather, a collection of the series I feel represent these ideals best and would recommend to those interested in this type of anime.

One of the oldest anime magazines in Japan, being devoted to animation and comics aimed at a general public and not for professionals, with the first issue being released in May 1978. The Anime Grand Prix started in 1979, with the first prize being announced at the issue of 1980 January. The results for most of the awards are made public in either May or June issues.

The choices are made by popular voting, using ballot postcards from the official magazine volumes (not by online voting), so it's the most popular anime for the magazine's reader base at the time.

This list will have all winners of the "Anime of the Year Award", plus the runner-ups that got less than a 50 votes difference to the winner, and the winners of the "Best One of All Time", that ran from 1980 {2nd Half} up to 1999 (there is no info for the quantity of votes). This will be updated every new award publication. Updated with the winner of 2022/2023.

Wanime is a block in the Latin American Warner Channel created in 2022 for the sole reason of airing anime. It serves as a spiritual successor to Cartoon Network's Toonami block, whose revival went defunct that same year. Dragon Ball Super is the flagship series of the block, with Goku's hair being part of the logo.

Crossover cosmology. Characters, myths, historical figures interacting with each other. Stories, timeliness, worlds clashes into each other. Shared universe. Avengers archetype. Peak fiction fantasy.
Cartoon version (western animation) of what I’m referring to: Ever After High, Monster High, Clone High, Marvel & DC multiverses, Arcane.

Toonami was a block in Cartoon Network Latin America created in 2002 mostly dedicated to anime, which served as the main hub of the medium in LatAm TV until its cancellation in 2007. After the block's death, anime slowly became a rarity in Cartoon Network Latin America, slowly disappear from LatAm airwaves until becoming all but extinct, with very few airing across the 2010s.

Toonami was revived in 2020 with Crunchyroll's support to air more anime in the channel, but the block would eventually die again in 2022 after Sony bought the streamer, ending its deal with Cartoon Network. Wanner Channel's Wanime block was born as a spiritual successor shortly afterwards.

That second death was not to last, as the new channel Adult Swim announced they would bring back Toonami as part of its schedule, with the Wanime block coexisting alongside it rather than overriding it.

Note: For obvious reasons, all Western series aired in the block, such as Justice League, won't be included in this stack.

What the title says, any anime which has over 1,000 fanfics on AO3. (Note: anime with 10,000+ fics are on their own list, so if you see anything that’s super popular that's missing, that’s why) And since the tagging system on AO3 is a bit inconsistent I made a few choices:
For anime with separate tag categories for the manga and anime adaptation, I only took the fic number for the anime entry, I did not add them together. For anime and manga which have already been lumped together under one tag I used that number.

For anime with reboots where the reboot and the original got lumped together I chose the version with the most members on myanimelist to represent it (like Fruits Basket)

For franchises which have all been lumped under one tag, I chose the earliest tv series installment of the series to represent it. (for example Gundam, or Lupin III). But if an individual installment of that franchise tagged separately also reached 1,000 fics by itself it also got included. (like Gundam Wing)
Exceptions to this rule are the Fate franchise and Yugioh, because I don’t want to make another list just to squeeze those in lmao. Here are the individual installments of those which have all reached 1,000:
Fate/Grand Order
Fate/Zero
Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's
Yu-Gi-Oh! GX
Yu-Gi-Oh! VRAINS
Yu-Gi-Oh! Zexal
Yu-Gi-Oh! ARC-V

And if you notice that I’ve missed anything feel free to let me know

Magic Kids was an Argentine cable channel which aired cartoons, anime and live shows aimed at kids and young teens. The channel was founded on January 12, 1995, and went defunct on May 24, 2006.

Personally, I never managed to watch the channel because I'm not Argentine, but I recognize the importance it had for anime in Latin America

In these anime, characters use musical instruments as weapons.
Usually shows up eventually in long running shōnens where antagonists all have their own gimmick. Also common in magical girl shows. And in wuxia shows.

Also, add Thunderbolt Fantasy S2, which doesn't have a MAL entry.

This is a list of Great, Long Anime. Watching these anime as a glue to hold together shorter anime is a great way to experience these anime. They are quiet long, so binging them is out of the question. Having long seasons, these anime anime start to blur the line between a show and a life style.

This list is filled with Action, Sports, and Military Anime as these genres and themes are more able to be spanned out to many episodes with enemies increasing intensity every arc. In many of the listed anime, the plot revolves around the struggle between two or more groups. The conflict in the opposing groups allow for many interactions that frequently span many episodes before resolving. The main characters have incredible physical power and have intense action scenes with notable conflicts with other characters, taking advantage of the opponent's weaknesses.

The selection is made by the best of the long anime, and are currently ordered by number episodes.

This is the second part of a collection of articles where I aim to explore the evolution of anime related music. This part of the list attempts to collect a list of most iconic performances on the "New Age" of anime music.

The term "New Age" used in this list refers to a phase after the "Anime Songs" phase. During this phase there started being more "tie-up songs" that that essentially were "tied" to the animated series in order to gain more exposure and market reach to the song itself. This was an interesting approach for many as it opened a new model on how to sell these products to the market.

The theme songs essentially dropped that strong connection to the series demonstrated by their lyrics and the emotion invoked by the song related to the series. Instead of that the song and the lyrics talk about the series or the characters with an indirect manner forming a supposed link between the performance and the series in question.

The supposed link consists of "the spirit" of the performance which refers to the indirect nature of the performance in relation to the series itself, and "the product" which refers to the stand alone nature of the performance itself as observed without the supposed connection to the initial series. The root of "the spirit" can be said originating from the earlier phase.

These types of theme songs were more common and popular after 1980s. The defining moment that can be said had influence on changing the theme songs away from this model is the popularity of the series "Urusei Yatsura" and how it used to promote a several "tie-up" songs that in contrast to "Anime Songs" by their nature don't necessarily have anything to do with the series, story or the characters as far as the direct approach goes.

I will write my thoughts on each of the entries on this list to further explain why I think the series and the theme songs included as a combined package have attained "iconic" status when it comes to the scene of "New Age" anime music in contrast to the "Anime Songs". I will also give a score related on how well "the spirit" and the "product" perform parallel to each other while complimenting the series as a whole. The series are ordered based on that score.

The term "iconic" in this list is defined by the popularity and how deeply established the spirit and the elements of the performance relating to the spirit establishing the product are in addition of them being supposedly intertwined with the series as a whole experience.
