Anime that feels like Midwest Emo, Midwest emo is a sub-genre of Emo involving very emotional and sentimental lyrics and lyrics that typically contain a nostalgic nature (Ex.American Football, The Brave Little Abacus, Home is Where, Marietta, Etc).

series that seem innocuous enough but become pretty wack by the end

Animeby eblf2013

Anime with dark/serious plots but with a bright colorful palette for most of the anime. Clear blue sunny skies and saturated colors are to be expected.

NOTE THAT THIS IS BASED ON AESTHETICS ONLY. That means, this has nothing to do with "Not what it seems" as some of these are dark from the beginning despite keeping a constantly colorful palette like Phantom Requiem for the Phantom or Summertime Render.

Note on Tetsuwan Birdy Decode:02
The plot gets considerably darker in season 2 yet it retains the appearance of season one, which isn't dark enough to make to this list.

For the first six months of 2023, I will be watching ALL of the anime adaptations based on Key’s visual novels, because I don’t play that kinda stuff but I want to experience all of these stories anyways! Aside from February, April and June, as February also has whatever I can watch of Clannad, April has both Planetarian and Little Busters! and June has all three anime original series, one anime adaptation is watched a month. Began on January 16, 2023, and is currently ongoing.

This list will always be in alphabetical order.

If the ratings on my profile tell you nothing else it should tell you this; I am very a harsh critic. My average for animé and manga are both in the 5's and, considering how many titles I've completed, will likely always be there. If I rate something a 6 or higher I really do think it's worthwhile. So everything in this stack is something I would recommend at least trying.

This stack is for all of the animé that made me or almost made me cry. Just because a series is listed here does not mean it was depressing. Some of these are mostly happy save for that one story or scene which made me well up. All animé in this stack are animé that I have finished and given a rating of 6 or above. This stack will be updated as I find new titles. Make sure you have lots of tissues.

This stack is dedicated to conventionally realistic (not truly surreal) shows, the main theme of which is the interaction of a straight man character or characters with people whose weirdness and eccentricity is so vivid and powerful that it impresses and leaves you confused in your thoughts trying to figure it out.

The compilation is mostly fun-comedy, but shit still happens, so be aware.

A collection of depressing anime. Some of these shows are very dark and full of psychological tension, contain strongly depressing themes or just leave you empty inside. Enjoy!

These animes are rated low, but are actually quite enjoyable. The plots can be convulated or too big for the number of episodes, but with an open-mind can be appreciated. They have really strong underlying themes and depth. If you finish the whole series, you will be satisfied.
