New Game!! is the definition of an anime knowing what it is, and executing it perfectly. It's 'cute girls doing cute things' done fantastically with great characters, and I really do adore it. Season 1 was great, and this season is shaping up to be even better!
After accomplishing her dream and becoming a game developer in the first season, this season continues on with Aoba's adventures with her fellow coworkers.
This anime does get serious at times, but it always keeps that saccharine sweet, warm feeling to it that makes whoever's watching it feel light. The animation is really, really nice and fluid and the art
is gorgeous. Every character design feels unique and looks great.
There's also tons, and I mean tons, of yuri moments. Some of them are indisputably romantic (Rin's obvious crush on Ko being an example.) while others aren't confirmed, but still definitely there, so if that's your thing (it definitely is mine ;D) then you're in luck!
Overall, New game!! is a series to watch to de-stress and grin like a dope at your screen while you do so, because it's just that cute. This season is shaping up to be even better than the first, and I eagerly await the next episode! 9/10.
* Im still getting used to these Reivew things so bare with me if i dont do a good job*
In every seasonal anime you need a palette cleanser or something that you can watch to make yourself feel good. Usually they are rom coms, comedy or slice of life.
New Game!! is a slice of life comedy that does a really good job at doing this because of its loveable characters and animations. In most slice of life animes the mc is super annoying and is surrounded by talented people in every aspect. However in New Game!! the mc is talented in
her craft and is easily likeable. If your looking for something that makes you feel warm and happy after every episode i highly recommend watching this anime. If you haven't watched the first season make sure you do so! If your a slice of life fan this anime is a must watch
A friend of mine saw me watching New Game!! and smugged: "Dude, you sure don't know how a real game-developing workshop looks like." Right. It's not real. This is just some altered reality where designers sparkle with flower patterns, ADs go around smile and talk gently, and coders simply blush over a fatal bug. But who cares if it's not real? Or even, isn't it because of that unrealisticness that we are able to enjoy it so much?
- The art cured my internal cancer.
- Lovely style of comedy.
- A rare case of a "cute-girls-doing-cute-things" slice-of-life anime with actual character developments.
- Talented, pure and hard-working
characters. Make you admire them and adore them at the same time.
- Soundtracks provide good ambience-feeling. Mostly cheerful. The OP/ED is nice, too.
- They actually put in some tension this season. Not too dramatic, but enough for you to understand how hard it is to make videogames, while still having you enjoy the show as a cute slice-of-life one.
- Yuri hints. Yuri hints everywhere. Yuri banzai!!
- Sometimes it feels awkward with the cuteness-overload high-pitched voices.
- Ok, this is personal, but I don't like Umiko's voice.
I think if you can stop being serious and put reality aside, then everyone, from a guy who has no idea how videogames are made to a coding wizard with pitch-black undereye circles, can have this anime put a stress-relieving smile on your face.
If I knew that this anime were heading into a K-on route of nothingness I would have skipped this second season. is not that I dislike it, but it gets boring that at least from my side, we don't get what Initially was an interesting premise: girls programming games while having some comedy and references. in fact I felt it as misleading as K-on was, K-on looked like a music anime, but it turned into a Tea party fest with nothing actually happening but Cute girls doing Cute stuff. in this case, NewGame! got away from the programming side and went into the Cute girls
doing Cute stuff Formula. at least, that's for the 4 episodes that have been released at the moment
At first, it looked like it would go on a serious route, the first 2 episodes went all in into their next project: deciding ideas for the plot, art, characters, etc. even having a clash between members making it look like possible rivals for efficiency. it looked quite good, but then what happened? we get back to the cute girls doing cute stuff with a bit of yuri-bait and 5% of actual plot progression. I had thoughts of how good was the change in Saekano Second Season when they were serious about making their visual novel and how the interactions were really important between each character in order to accomplish their main objective, sadly this doesn't happens here, or at least, not for now. I hope that the rest of this season doesn't turn out to be more of the same with no progression.
Aside of cute girls designs, I liked how the art of both games showed on this season look, they explained right how specs works when making a game and the physics of it, So I will give points for that. so far this is the only thing right on this second season
Nothing really relevant to this point, soundtrack for comedic relief is okay overall
at first, it looked like the characters were going to have a nice development, for example the relation between Aoba and Yagami was interesting, since the character design team were having a clash on character design that made it look like an interesting rivalry between the Master and his pupil (ever heard of "The apprentice overcomes the teacher"? ) sadly that is thrown away when we got back into the "Cute girls doing cute stuff" plot, I hope that they don't turn this just "cute girls doing cute stuff" and kill the development by the end of the season
As I said above, is not like I dislike it, but it could have been better if they didn't go K-on all over again with doses of "cute girls doing cute stuff" (for fucks sake, how many times have I said that?) yet if that remains, I'm afraid that this season will be nothing new in comparison of the first season.
if you are willing to watch cute girls doing cute stuff, keep watching, but if you were expecting more plot, this second season just doesn't deliver, at least not yet
