how far did you get before dropping it?

Well the answer to your to root A is that it's story was changed a lot. Well even Tokyo Ghoul 1st season was a rushed adaptation. 70+ chapters of tokyo ghoul manga were adapted into that which are a lot. Lot of content was cut out whereas root A was not good either. The author changed the story so it may feel better as studio hadn't enough money or they didn't want to put enough money on Tokyo Ghoul. It was done so that the rush feeling don't come as otherwise would be an rushed season like 1st one which was already a disappointment for manga fans but then it come with even bigger disappointment because it come as changed story+rushed adaptation.
I think you thought that tokyo ghoul fans would hate you to say that about tokyo ghoul root A but they themselves hate it. I watched Tokyo Ghoul anime first and it was enjoyable for me but manga is a lot better than it I read 2nd part with some rush when I heard the story is changed but I think I would've read it completely at some slow pace but one thing I do get is that manga makes more sense.
Tokyo ghoul:Re is another tragedy though.
