Synopsis

Tanjirou Kamado lives with his impoverished family on a remote mountain. As the oldest sibling, he took upon the responsibility of ensuring his family's livelihood after the death of his father. On a cold winter day, he goes down to the local village in order to sell some charcoal. As dusk falls, he is forced to spend the night in the house of a curious man who cautions him of strange creatures that roam the night: malevolent demons who crave human flesh.

When he finally makes his way home, Tanjirou's worst nightmare comes true. His entire family has been brutally slaughtered with the sole exception of his sister Nezuko, who has turned into a flesh-eating demon. Engulfed in hatred and despair, Tanjirou desperately tries to stop Nezuko from attacking other people, setting out on a journey to avenge his family and find a way to turn his beloved sister back into a human.

Background

As a part of the JUMP START initiative, the first three chapters of Kimetsu no Yaiba were published in English in VIZ Media's digital Weekly Shonen Jump on the same day as the Japanese release. It was published in English as Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba by VIZ Media under its Shonen Jump imprint from July 3, 2018 to August 3, 2021.

Kimetsu no Yaiba won the Special Prize at the 25th Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize awards in 2021.

First off, I know Demon Slayer is one of those some hate it, some love it shows/manga. I personally really enjoy Demon Slayer, sure the characters aren't too fleshed out and the story is admittedly pretty basic. However, what really sells Demon Slayer for me is the feel. I fell in love watching these characters do their thing. It's a super fun watch/read and it's one of the few manga that I read that went by quick.

Honestly, there isn't much to say... The art in this manga is quite lacking, one could even say it's mediocre, which is ironic when compared to the anime, which is one of the most visually stunning anime I've ever seen. The plot is simple and straightforward; don't expect major plot twists and thrilling turns, it's quite predictable and the story is rushed, as if the author wanted to finish the manga as quickly as possible.

But despite all of that, it's undeniable that it's an enjoyable read with a fantastic universe and elements to explore. That's why I love this work as a whole. The character ...

Demon Slayer starts strong and then quickly falls apart. I started with the anime and was hooked the first few episodes, but by the end of the first season was starting to get bored with the direction the story was going. Unfortunately the manga only got worse from there. It was a slog getting through some of the chapters as it gets extremely repetitive

A lot of the characters are flat, boring, and I ended up forgetting most of their names almost immediately. The villain was incredibly weak and there really isn't anything worth saying about him.
