Really liked your review of Fruits Basket manga. Tohru's "perfectness" annoyed me to no end, but after reading your thoughts about her, I realized she's just like you described her - not perfect herself. Thanks for making this great manga even better for me by making me hate the MC a little less. :')

They were great, too many purists are just bitching about them. And that's true, although I figured it's because in general, dubs are definitely better than they were ten years ago.

I only have Evangelion and Chrono Crusade DVDs when it comes to ADV, so I'll have to take your word for it on top of doing Google searches to see how nice the releases at least looked. I should've looked closer at the DBZ movie VHS tapes for comparison, lol. The DVD releases Sentai's been doing really is baffling. I know that DVDs are basically on their way out now, but it doesn't mean it should be half-assed. I think it's just a result of recovering from ADV's closing and they just don't have access to the same resources. *shrugs* But those spindle cases are terrible, why are they even a thing? Who thought that was a great idea? It makes the DVD case for Samurai Pizza Cats look better in comparison, and I've just complained about the placement and the difficulty of getting some of the discs out (freaking stupid flower button-thingy whatever it's called where you can't just push down on it, you have to do something else).

(Wait, didn't the Elfen Lied DVD release do the spindle case as well?)

They really do, it's just that some people can't stand Hilary Haag. I don't blame them, but she's not a bad voice actress. XD Welllll to be fair, that is one of the routes of the visual novel. Even though the adaptation used the friendship end, to leave a very tiny part (intentionally or not) would be a nod to the true end of that route.

CLANNAD was one of the first dubs Sentai did when they took over for ADV, and I think they inherited the same financial problems, so they had to make do with what they could. Wouldn't have hurt to proofread, though--I at least imagine doing the subtitles is something that could be done at home, or is at least done in a room with little to no distractions.

I'll watch the 5 Centimeters dub one of these days, if only because I have plans to get my brother to sit down and watch it with me. I believe the ADV version is on YouTube, I kinda remember seeing it once some time ago. But yeah, the voice actors at least can stand on their own, that's typically what I pay attention to majority of the time anyway. I haven't made myself go learn the names of some of these ADR director folks, although since names keep popping up every now and then, it's probably about time I start paying attention. Especially since recently, I've gotten upset over the Aniplex dub of Cardcaptor Sakura, and I learned the (six, that I could find) voice actors who worked on the dub are excellent voice actors, yet I hate listening to them in CCS.

I heard the subtitles on the DVD were terrible, although I haven't really sat down to watch the official subs all the way through. I only watched it subbed (fairly recently during a rewatch) on episodes 12-14 of the first season, but I didn't notice anything that made me double-take. The subtitles that briefly pop up to translate the kanji on-screen aren't too bad, but that's about it, lol. I personally don't like the subtitles font anyway, but they're not terribly distracting. Maybe if I'm bored one day, I'll pop a disk in and set it for sub to see for myself. (I got mine from Amazon, so they were like $40-50 each, but I wanted them so bad for my birthday a few years ago, lol. I don't have a Blu-Ray player either, though apparently the PS3 can play them, and I don't know if my Macbook can play them, too.)

Your reviews are beautiful, and thank you so much for defending the CLANNAD dub. With exception of Cromartie High School and all of Appleseed's awesome dubs (although I hear the 5 Centimeters Per Second dub was good), I can definitely see the hate for Steven Foster (and since he's no longer involved with Sentai Filmworks, the dubs have noticeably gotten better). But for one of Sentai's first dubs after ADV dissolved, it's really not that bad, and it makes me frustrated a bit when people don't properly give it a chance. The first season, I can understand a bit, but it got MUCH better with After Story (with exception of Sanae... what the hell happened there?), although that was because he was replaced.
