Oh wait, I didn't notice that. That's cool.
DreamWindow Apr 3, 2023 12:34 PM
For sure. Before Dissaperance, Yuki was my favorite. And yeah, its so good. I just finished rewatching the series so I'll probably end up rewatching that too.

I thought Miyuki was always the underappreciated one honestly. Tsukasa has always been my favorite. That was a good scene indeed. I remember she started crying at some point. Poor girl. I like the recorder scene
Lots of great memes back in the day

Lucky Star, huh? Guess this is the path of enlightenment I must take to be a true SOL Fan... I haven't watched it... yet. Yeah, I like KyoAni's style, especially those five faves. Thanks.

Well, I like her because I think her personality is much more endearing than most of the other girls in the series. But I also like her, because she is rather mysterious, and has a tendency to makes things really exciting! A lot of her scenes are some of my favourites in the series. The scene in the classroom in the beginning is what really got me hooked on the series, when I first watched it. Plus her more active role in Disappearance. Her protective nature towards Yuki, not only established a new side to her, that I really liked, but also built up to the scene towards the end so brilliantly. So ever since then, I think she's been my favourite character.

That sounds interesting. I was curious how Anno's sensibility would translate to in live action, it's nice to hear the results are mostly positive. I'm not sure if I'll be able to watch it soon, but I'll definitely get back to you once I do. Thanks!

Sorry the late reply, was away for a while.

Thanks for your overview of what to expect from Gunbuster. I think I'll be better able to appreciate it the next time I watch it.

Enjoy! Satoshi Kon's films are some of the finer works I've come across in this medium and I'm sure you'll have a nice time.

>As for Tokyo Godfathers, I might just leave it for Christmas then... I mean what better time is there to watch a Christmas movie than on Christmas itself?
Exactly the response I was looking for, although I was hesitant to suggest it myself since I wasn't sure you were willing to wait that long.

Haha of course! Thanks again for suggesting I watch Death Note first. I'm four episodes in and it's been really great so far! Looking forward to binging this over the next week or so

You're totally right, I'm so sorry about that! I'll be sure to check out Gundam then :)
jubbo Jan 29, 2023 7:32 PM
Oh I gotcha. Kinda sounds similar to how a lot of people found the mouths weird in 3-gatsu no Lion

I've actually never seen a mecha before, so that's what made me curious about Gundam! Would it still be best to start with 0079 though? If so I'll go ahead and add it to my list!

I've heard good things about Akebi's Sailor Uniform, and glad to hear that you enjoyed it! Looking forward to watching it then :) Kinda strange to hear that about the animation though. Was it a budget issue or something then?

Lmao sorry to hear you didn't like anything from this season! I appreciate the warning though. How do ya like Gundam? I've considered watching it, but I'm not so sure. I'd love to hear your thoughts on it!
jubbo Jan 29, 2023 4:07 PM
Thank you so much for suggesting that watch order! I'll definitely take you up on that idea :) what are you planning on watching next? Watch anything lately that you really enjoyed?
jubbo Jan 24, 2023 3:02 PM
Hi thanks for accepting my fr. Nice to meet you!

Yeah, that seems especially true for Ritual. I actually did check out the first 10 minutes of Gunbuster, but I found the 80's campiness to be a little off-putting. That said, I plan on giving it another go in the future since I see it being praised by quite a few noteworthy MAL users. Could you make a convincing case for it? I think I need a better idea of what it's about and what to expect from it.

It did feel like a purgatory story to me as well. I interpreted it as the final test before attaining salvation for those who died young, with ones like Rakka and Reki going through more hardships as punishment for committing suicide in their previous lives.

I'd have said Perfect Blue, since it was my first Kon film. But it took me me a more than a year before I found it in me to watch anything else by him, the stuff is harrowing, so you're probably right about avoiding it. Maybe start with Millennium Actress. It's simple, heartfelt and very well-made. I see Tokyo Godfathers as a Christmas movie and Paprika as a celebration of his previous works - it's more enjoyable once you're well-acquainted with his work and his distinctive style. There's also Magnetic Rose, the first part of Memories, which I hear is excellent, but I haven't watched it myself.

Also, thanks for accepting my FR. I hope to have more conversations like this. Have a great weekend as well.

No, I haven't yet seen any of his live-action exploits, although Ritual seems very tempting, it's got a very high score and a bunch of good reviews on letterboxd. I think that's definitely worth taking a look at. Love & Pop seems to have favourable reviews too.

Haibane Renmei is absolutely fantastic, it would walk into my favs if I removed the films. I'd put it right after Mushishi.

Wow, although I can tell it isn't the real thing, the resemblance is uncanny. It's got the tone nearly down. I'm actually interested in creating a new profile layout based on Abe's art one day, but I think I'll stick with the current one until I tire of it.

That's a name I haven't heard in a while. Hope they get the funding for it and are able to complete, I'd hate to see another Satoshi Kon/Dreaming Machine scenario.

All that praise is unwarranted and untrue, but thank you nonetheless. Yoshiyuki Sadamoto is indeed an incredible artist. No, the one you're referring to was a piece of promotional art he drew for Anno's live-action film "Love & Pop" (which iirc was his live-action debut as well).

Btw, despite having SEL and Haibane Renmei in your favs, I'm surprised to not see Yoshitoshi Abe as well. What are your thoughts on him?
