You took the words right out of my mouth. It wasn't like anything tomino had done prior. I think he should've retired after Turn A tbh.

Yeah, I liked Loran. His archetype is a hard one to do correctly. Usually, characters in his archetype come off as too preachy. But Tomino did a good job with him as you said. He found a nice balance.

I thought Dianna was a phenomenal character tbh. The best in the show. The Kihel and Dianna dynamic was very well done. The commentary was gripping, especially regarding imperialism. But underneath, I thought the show demonstrated a love of humanity that Tomino has never shown before. He is usually very nihilistic and misanthropic in his gundam shows.

I really liked the setting like you said. That whole colonial era, soft color palette really made it stand out. Yeah, I think tomino should've branched out and done more genres aside from mecha. I think he would be good at hard scifi, maybe sol like you said.

how are you liking victory on rewatch?

thanks bro. I hope you are doing well as well.

Maybe there was enough success with the re-release of Char's Counterattack and NT for a theatrical release here.

Release order is normally how I recommend new fans experience UC Gundam. I actually watched ZZ Gundam on my initial viewing of the UC-timeline back from 2001-2003, so I have some nostalgia for that show anyway. I agree, though. Skipping that series is not a good idea. It gives you a much stronger understanding of Char's motivations in CCA. I think some may have issues with CCA because they have not seen ZZ Gundam. Which is a real shame, because Haman Karn is superb as the main bad and there are some incredible elements of Gundam lore throughout the series.

G Reco is a wild ride. I guess at this point I have enough experience with Tomino to understand how he directs, so I was able to follow the narrative very well. But I totally get why it would turn many off. I see you just finished up Turn A Gundam. How did you like it? I think it's one of the best beautiful and spiritually uplifting shows I've ever seen.

I believe Wing was my first Gundam, but I do remember encountering an article about Turn A Gundam in an anime magazine around the year 1999. So, that was probably my first exposure to knowing of the franchise. I still have that magazine somewhere around the house. That's neat you just found Zeta at a used store (probably a rare find) and dove right in. The strangeness is what always attracted me to Zeta.

After rewatching F91 last night, I really wish we could've gotten a full series even more now.

That’s a shame you never got to see it in theaters. Even though I didn’t like the film, it was still a great experience. Hopefully, we can both catch Hathway’s Flash in theaters. Most definitely. The UC timeline is always best viewed in ordered. I’m onto Unicorn now and already enjoying more than previously.

I’ve actually never seen it but heard there’s some good lore in it, desite the film being quite bad. What did you think about it?

I agree with that and was thinking the same thing during my rewatch of ZZ. I did enjoy ZZ much more in my second viewing than my first. I bumped it from a 5/10 to a 7/10. I just wish those opening episodes were more focused and tonally consistent with Zeta. Remember the Moon-Moon arc? That’s up there with some of Tomino’s worst directing jobs. Overall, I still really liked the series. Haman Karn and the lore alone makes it worth the watch.

Oh yes, I’m a big fan of F91. I see the ambition in it and it’s beautifully animated with some great character potential. Shame it never got the 52 episodes Tomino wanted because I believe it could’ve been on the level of Zeta Gundam. I would love to see Crossbone get an anime adaptation with Tomino behind the directors chair. Maybe there’s hope with U.C. Next 100 Years Project.

You gotta give me ur ranking of all gundam after you are done.

Yeah I feel you. But I think the one year war has the potential for infinite stories. Stuff like thunderbolt and war in the pocket, and to an extent stardust memory add so much to the world. But it is good to see some branching out. I know victory is chronologically at the end of the timeline but I feel as though nobody really wants to touch that.

That is pretty cool. Too bad Wing was trash. Maybe I should finish it. Idk you think its worth it? Have you seen pacific rim? I think if a good director like Del Toro does gundam it would be good. But sadly, I know that will not happen.

Nah I never heard of it. Set after victory? Interesting. I still need to see victory although Ive heard mixed things. What did you think?

Tbh I think Turn A is probably Tomino's best work. Tell me what you think afterward.

NT was painful to watch. I was happy to experience Gundam in the theater, though. I just wish it wasn't such a terrible film. I still need to revisit Unicorn. I've only seen it once, but that's about to change since I'm rewatching the UC Gundam continuity to prepare for Hathaway's Flash. Currently on ZZ right now and those comedic episodes are hard to focus on. Luckily, it gets much better from episode 20 onward.

Turn A is my second favorite entry in the franchise. I find it very spiritual, beautiful, and unique with an unbelievable score. I still need to watch Gundam Age and MS Igloo. I'm also a huge fan of G Reco even if it is messy in places and moves at a breakneck pace. I like how it feels like a properly futuristic Gundam show in the UC timeline. It has superb world building with complex politics and some of Tomino's most Tomino characters. It's among the best looking Gundam series as well.

The Origin is a masterpiece. I'm probably giving it a 10/10 when it's all said and done. I plan on reading Char's Deleted Affair and maybe Crossbone Gundam (even if the artwork is kinda meh for me). Do you have any recommendations?
Gundam_Sage Jan 30, 2021 12:42 PM
Thanks for the add! I'm excited about Hathaway's Flash. It looks very much in-line with classic UC Gundam based on the trailer, so that much is promising. Hopefully, it's better than Gundam NT as well. I need to read more of Tomino's novels. I've only read his 0079 novel. Are you looking forward to it?
PoeticJustice Jan 28, 2021 6:04 PM
I didn't think Amuro had a mother complex. I thought that was more of Char's thing since he wanted Lalah to mommy him. Amuro does have unresolved issues with his mother and that could play into his distant relationship with women. He constantly pushes Frau away from him although Im sure he knows he likes her. Thinking about it, Amuro really had a hard life and knew no peace when he died. Rip.

Wow you are pretty knowledgeable about history. I definitely think Japanese politics of the WW2 had an influence on the political dynamics of gundam. Pretty sure the whole family hated Gihren at that point. The only one who didn't was Dozle but the lovable oaf has a big heart. Yeah, that is a good point of Gihren. I was thinking that Degwin didn't seem like the type to assassinate people for political gain. I wouldn't put that pass Gihren, he even killed his own father so he is ruthless.

Nah I haven't seen G Savior. Sounds horrible lol. I don't think Gundam can be made into a good film. It would have to be directed by someone who is passionate about the franchise but Hollywood would just churn out generic garbage with all the themes mangled. I did hear there was to be a Hollywood Gundam film but I have not heard updates in a few years. Speaking of movies, have you read the Hathaway's Flash novels? I heard they were good and am looking forward to the movie. I wish it was a series so I wouldn't have to wait until the bluray releases but it is what it is.
PoeticJustice Jan 26, 2021 9:01 PM
Sounds like a unsuccessful mishmash of gundam tropes and plot points. Apparently, it really shits the bed with the film that I have not seen.

I dont think Amuro and Sayla should be in a relationship. Even in the OG, they barely had any chemistry. I like Amuro being this dismissive, antisocial young man. But who knows, maybe Tomino makes it work. Yeah, I wish in the origin they would've expanded on Degwin and Zeon's ideologies. Seems like a missed opportunity.

We can still hope. Gundam is getting more popular in the west so maybe they will release some more of Tomino's books. I am interested in the manga version of Char's counterattack which is supposed to be inline with Tomino's original vision.

The Gundam Origin manga set is great. I own the entire collection and it is worth the money. The hardcovers are awesome and it is full of extra like conversations between the author and hideki anno, and Makoto Shinkai. Really good shit.
PoeticJustice Jan 25, 2021 8:55 AM
Yea when I watched 00 years ago I thought it was pretty weak. It just seemed like a Wing clone but not as bad as wing, thankfully. Zeta gundamness in terms of the autism? I know setsuna wasn't the sharpest knife in the drawer.

turn a is great. I think it probably tomino's best written anime. hope you like it.

I think seed gets a lot of flak. It isn't nearly as bad as wing imo. idk maybe ive just softened up.

origin is probably the greatest rendition of the original gundam imo. There are a whole bunch of little moments that texture the experience. and the artwork is fantastic. what do you think so far?

yea tell me about them. I know tomino was quite the novelist. Shame we didnt get the novelization of Zeta gundam. I think that would be interesting. I think Zeta could use the Origin treatment as well.
PoeticJustice Jan 24, 2021 9:16 PM
how do you like 00
punishedsneed Dec 29, 2020 10:02 PM
No interest in NT. CDA is not very good. Hathaway's Flash is going to be largely devoid of the Islamic stuff which is sad, but yes I am excited for it. Hopefully it incites a translation of the original books.
Cybereign Dec 29, 2020 6:25 AM
also you should watch legend of the galactic heroes its an amazing space opera that i consider the greatest anime of all time it takes inspiration from gundam too and the mc is similar to char
Cybereign Dec 29, 2020 6:23 AM
i heard mixed things about zz but since zeta became one of my favorites i have to give it a try at some point especially to see the conclusion to fa and kamille's romance arc but for now i still have a few shows that i need to take care of
PoeticJustice Nov 26, 2020 5:08 PM
Maybe Gundam changed because of Tomino to an extent. He doesn't like his older works that have a lot of suffering. He believes that anime is only meant to "entertain." which sucks. I prefer gundam like zeta, 0079, and thunderbolt. And then there is IBO which is a very interesting premise, using child soldiers to fight, but it completely wastes it premise on stupid shit.

I just bought the first 6 volumes of Gundam Origin which I hear is very good. I also own 0079 novelization but I haven't gotten to reading it yet. I have read Char's deleted affair and started reading the Char's Counterattack manga. I heard that the manga is more inline with Tomino's original vision. You should definitely check out Char's deleted affair, it explains his relationship with Haman.
