Before I read this manga I wondered why a series so short doesn't have a single review. Now I know better: it's because it's as dumb as a pile of bricks and as interesting as this metaphor.
The story has a lot of potential, but it's all wasted on a extremely weak main character. There is royal intrigue going on, Fred (the-count-my-brother) seems to be some sort of spy knight that does all sort of interesting things between pages (as in: we hardly see it), there are dashing knights and a tsundere princess. But it doesn't matter because the main character is never really involved in
...
anything relevant to the overall plot and spends more time thinking about a boy than wondering why the hell she was raised away from court without any idea of the fact that she's a royal* and a Countess to boot. I kept reading expecting either Mirelle to grow as a person or for the plot to actually involve her, but it was hopeless. There is nothing here but a lukewarm romance and a convulted plot.
And, before I go, let me tell you about the one thing that made me terribly mad, seeing as I'm a professional pastry cook: the whole "her bread is terrible" thing. In first place let me just say it's really hard to make terrible bread, you kinda have to push yourself, and if you do manage there is no way you'll not know it. In order to be so bad it's inedible a loaf has to be either hard as stone - so you can't bite onto it - or very funky tasting, possibly because you added something that has no business being in bread to it (my spouse once made red wine bread. It was terrible, but not inedible, just something I didn't felt like eating). There is no acceptable excuse for being raised in a bakery and not even knowing you make terrible bread. Does she not have any taste buds? Or is it an eyesight problem, so that she couldn't see her loaves looked different from anyone else's? It bothered the hell outta me. More than a 16 year old girl not knowing she's in love.
In sum, if you want a dumb shoujo romance to read, go get anything else, because this is a seriously bad series.
* Seriously though, by my calculations she's either 4th or 5th in the line of succession, depending on how exactly the inheritance works. THIS is interesting, but never makes the page.
