“All this living, killing, and dying…
Do you really need a reason for it?”



For some manga, it’s love at first sight. The title may be intriguing, the story might be riveting, the characters possibly lovable, or perhaps the art just blinds you with sheer awesomeness. Either way, you flip through the pages and get instant gratification.

Because Goodbyes Are Coming Soon is not one of those.

Despite that, or rather, because of that, no other one shot has impressed me as much as this one.

This is about the aftermath of a revolution, portrayed without the romanticism you usually find in manga portrayals of the Shinsengumi and the bakumatsu. I like how subtly the mangaka portrayed everything - Okita's flashback was particularly affecting. It starts off a little slow, and I think some will be disappointed that the artist stuck to a close portrayal of how everyone actually looked, but the art is gorgeous with the imagery telling the story just as often as the words. Nicely done.

Sayonara ga Chikai no de is a short, quiet one-shot that says more in a few pages than most series manage in volumes, or at least it tries to. It’s written and drawn by Makoto Yukimura, a mangaka best known for Vinland Saga and Planetes and someone whose works have always stood out for their deeply human pacifist core. That theme is alive here too.

The story follows a sick man during wartime, and for most of its brief length, not a lot "happens" in the typical plot sense. But there’s something underneath it all that lingers. A statement about the futility of violence, the fragility ...
