Spotlight Anime: La Maison en Petits Cubes

MAL Series Information Page: La Maison en Petits Cubes

MAL Score – 8.60 (by 1016 users)
Ranked - #41
Popularity - #1350

For the next week I would like to have a discussion about the anime that focuses on the key elements that we here on MAL use to critically rate an anime: Animation, Sound, Characters, Story, and Enjoyment.

I would like everyone to approach this thread as if you were going to write a review and structure your initial post like this:

Animation - insert rating
Sound - insert rating
Characters - insert rating
Story - insert rating
Enjoyment - insert rating

Animation - discuss any pros and cons of the animation styling used in the series, try to include some specifics.

Sound - describe any of the things you liked or didn't care for in regards to the music and sound effects used in the series

etc...

If you are having trouble writing up a review or coming up with specific pros and cons, please don't worry. Just do the best you can with it and if you can only write two or three sentences about any of the 5 elements then that's OK. Not everyone here is currently at a level which will allow them to articulate their thoughts and opinions.

After your initial post is made you can feel free to civilly discuss issues of contention. I am sure there will be many opinions expressed here that some of us will disagree upon and criticise and it is for that reason that this entire club exists. So I hope everyone has fun and I am really looking forward to watching this discussion unfold.

*Due to voting rule changes, this series is permanently inducted from its first poll data.

RESULTS OF THE YOU DECIDE POLL:

La Maison en Petits Cubes was inducted into the club Anime list:
45 Yes - 78.9%
12 No - 21.1%

58 I don't know - 50.4% of the total number polled

On 18/12/2009 La Maison en Petits Cubes will be voted on for a second and final time

A brilliant short, quite possibly the best one ever made. I loved the watercolour aesthetics. The story, told in an interesting way, was simple yet touching with its soft melancholy, enhanced by the beautiful music. For a twelve-minute feature, LMePC is truly outstanding and it will obviously get my yes vote.

^Couldn't have said it better myself. A masterpiece of a short. Perfect length, perfect pacing.

It looked beautiful, had a simple and charming concept, and was executed in a very artistic matter.

Very beautiful in every aspect. I see many of these in competitions, but this surpasses most of what I've ever seen in a skillful way. Such a short story and so many interesting things inside it.

Pleasant. Not a masterpiece, not great, but really good. It reminds me of a lot of the shorts that Nickelodeon used to show when I was tiny, so it gets points for the nostalgia factor.

This may not seem relevant, but can someone tell me what kind of production was this?

I'm a sucker for films and manga like this. It's amazing how some stories feel more concentrated when dialogue is reduced or removed altogether.

What do you mean what kind of production?

The budget.

It's completely different if this was a work for college or some Hollywoodesque pass-time.

Haven't read anything about the budget but the animation was by Oh production.

Having watched Tortov Roddle a few years ago (back when I didn't catalogue this type of animation as anime) I went to watch this new short piece by the same author with some expactations but not very high.
Later when I finished this, I was astonished.

The greatness about this short piece comes from having a story of a lifetime being told in a few minutes, the art and animation only did complement the main objective and they did it perfectly.

It was a 9 from me.

Life-affirming short, and I'm glad the majority of MAL like it as much as I do. I've seen it many times and it always brightens my day, the animation would get an obvious 10/10 from me, wonderful and personal. The story develops quickly yet the pace feels perfect. Just a wonderful and immersive short. Great music too.
