GONZO announced that they will sell the Department of Digital Movie, which was in charge of the 3D CGI and visual effects of the animations, to a movie post-production company Qtec. 25 employees out of 80 will leave GONZO.

GONZO intends to establish an efficient production system by yielding the high-cost department.

Not really. It's actually a wise move. Most of the anime companies doesn't have their own 3D CGI departments, which are pretty costly to keep.

CGI looks out of place more often than anything anyways, so this could be a good thing.

As far as I know, Madhouse, Kyoto Animation, SHAFT, BONES, Production I.G, and Satelight have their own 3D CGI departments. Toei, asreed. Hal Film Maker, Brains Base, Nomad, AIC Spirits outsource the 3D CGI to Gonzo, Sanjigen, Studio Galapagos etc.

Sunrise also have their own CGI studio I believe. They use it for minor things in 00 and SEED like ships while they use it full out in their MS Igloo CGI series.

But hopefully this news means Gonzo has realized the way they abuse CGI in their shows is not well liked by many fans and rethink their animation strategies.

Wait, what? So the wonderful mix of 2-D and 3-D we've come to love from Gonzo will be gone?

I'm upset now. ;_;

One more step for an efficient Gonzo or just delaying the inevitable?

Only time will tell.

It took 80 people to create that seamless CGI we all have come to love?

I guess they can go out and buy a playstation and get the same results.

they put CGI on new level after their first Blue Submarine OVA. it's a shame that company which was a leader of CGI usage is going to sell it out...
though their recent works wasn't so descent when it comes to 3D.

Just because they aren't working for Gonzo doesn't mean they will al be un-employed. Whoever buys the 3d-studio will more-n-likely keep the current staff instead of having to completely rehire competent workers.

80 are the number of gonzo employees. 25 are working on the 3D and VFX. and those 25 will move to the new company.

This is funny(not really) since they specialize in "digital" types of animation. They will be gone soon.

Good thing they aired Blassreiter already, otherwise the project might get cancelled since most of the scenes required aid from their 3D CGI department. It is such a pity to see GONZO fall into this economic position. I liked many of their animes. I guess there won't be any new ones coming from them anymore..

wow lots of negative posts.
I haven't seen all of gonzo's recent anime, but have thier quality slipped all the way or something?

I don't need all this cgi in my anime but it was nice when they made anime with it before.

This means GONSO will have to start using more, GASP, 2D! Good, now maybe their shows wont have so much of the CGI abuse they're notorious for. One step to their revival, or one step into their grave?

And by the way, the only anime I like from Gonzo are Hellsing (not the OVAs, plz) and Seto no Hanayome (which I haven't finished xD). And there's none (or almost none) CGI there. I've dropped like 6 Gonzo Animes just because of the unnecessary and random 3DCGI

So, I think this may be the best thing that could ever happen to them xD

Seto no Hanayome was a joint production with another company(AIC), Gonzo were only there to animate what the other company's staff told them to.
