The following is the voting for the anime movie Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust.

RULES:
1. You can only vote for a title if you've finished watching/reading it. You must’ve read or watched at least 60% of the published content for unfinished titles. There might be exceptions for very long finished titles – they are decided on a case by case basis, but usually amount to more than half of the published content.

2. Write your vote at the very top of your comment.

3. Below your vote, give a substantial explanation to back it up. It doesn't have to be lengthy; it just needs to cover the points you want to make.

4. If you have only read/watched the adaption/source material of the respective nominee, please state so in your post.

5. It will take a minimum of 5 votes for either Enlightenment or Relations to make it into any of the lists as an anime (3 votes for manga). If it fails to reach that, it will be deemed Unremarkable.

6. The votes for Enlightenment will have to outnumber the votes for Unremarkable and Relations for it to be included in our list; the same goes for Relations. If it fails to reach that, it will be deemed Unremarkable.

7. Behave yourself. We accept discussions and debate, not flaming and incoherent fanboy/fangirl behavior.

8. The fate of the poll will lie in the hands of the officers if it turns out that there are more first time voters than regulars or the series cannot be gauged by both voting and discussions.

This polling process will last 7 days, and end on July 28th.

Option 2 - This title should not appear on either of our lists.

I'll just reiterate and elaborate on what I've already said about this movie.

Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust, while a visual spectacle to behold, is not Enlightening. It is good. Very good in fact, but it is not an eye-opening or revolutionary vampire story. For it to make Enlightenment despite that, it would need to have exorbitant amounts of well done suspense or horror, which it doesn't.

What it does have is a cast of well designed, but mostly shallow characters. This movie has a diverse entourage of Vampire Hunters, Demons, Gate Keepers, Kidnapped Damsels, Half-breeds, Hands, and spaceship riding Draculas. Sound kind of messy? Well, yeah, sort of. It all makes for a Gothic and entertaining ride, but a blood pool that isn't deep enough to soak your ankles in. This movie does atmosphere wonderfully, but that's sort of what these characters come off as: just set pieces to enhance the atmosphere. They have nice concepts, but none of them exude large amounts of personality. Couple that with a story that is solid, but lacking any true creativity or intricacy, and you've got Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust.

The only other escape it could pull from 'Unremarkable' would be if it was some cult classic, desperately needing to be rescued and exposed to the light of day (pardon the expression). Again, this is not the case, as it has many fans completely content with where it stands in the community.

Bloodlust is a movie that oozes style, and holds the warmth & care of it's creators. It succeeds in delivering an enjoyable ride, and I recommend it for any Halloween night, but otherwise, it is not Enlightening.

Oh, and a hearty thank you to Zeru for setting up the poll.

Option 2.

While I didn't get the chance to go back and view it again, I think most of my points would've been covered already. It's highly stylized and well animated thanks to wonderful work by Madhouse, but it's entertaining at most and not much beyond that. It's story is a straight forward one, with little food for thought or innovation in the vampire medium for anime. I would highly recommend this movie for an anime themed halloween party, but I don't think it deserves praise beyond that.

Option 2 - This title should not appear on either of our lists.

Honestly I saw this a few years ago so I'm mostly working on a stoners memory here, but I do remember enough and it definitely is not enlightening. I'm not even sure how it made it this far to be honest.

Vampire Hunter D is just a good movie, plain and simple. As a fan of the whole vampire genre/theme I do enjoy both installments, it's sort of a mix of the romantic and horrific side of vampires. The reason I'm voting option 2 is because nothing really stands out as special. There isn't really any notable character development, the storyline is simple and enjoyable but not really creative or particularly noteworthy in any way. The music is average.

Having said all that I basically just feel that Vampire Hunter D is all about style over substance. And it does style well enough to be enjoyable but I wouldn't call something like that enlightening unless it was close to perfect for what it was trying to be.

Like a lot of people, I'm really confused as to how it even got this far.

Okay, this movie is VERY enjoyable and it definitely gets points for both that and the extremely high animation quality for its timrace. But.. that's all it has to it, really. The characters are pretty damn flat and get no development whatsoever. The storyline kinda gets jumbled up and just downright stupid in the third half. I'm sorry, but I'm not going to give a shit about some damsel in distress girl who can't live or make choices on her own without her boyfriend. It had some nice style to it, and the scenes were done dramatically, but there was just nothing there, really.

It's a fun movie to watch, don't get me wrong, but what new does it bring to the table that could make it enlightening? Nothing, nothing at all. It's just another vampire horror story with some sick graphics (in more ways then one) and high entertainment value. A nice movie to kill time with, but absolutely not something that can be seen as "enlightening" in the slightest.

Well I am going to be a non-conformist and say option 1.

It is admittedly a great movie, in a league of its own when it comes to entertainment value and I would recommend any anime fan to watch it at some point which earns it points to be on the enlightenment list.

The characters receive a fair bit of development without shoving it down the audiences throat. It also puts light on fantasy, while it brings nothing new to the screen when it comes to the Vampires, Hunters and Damsel in Distress department it also knows how to do fantasy in a way where it still remains somewhat intriguing where it allows you to come up with an answer for yourself, no explanations are required and does not forget that the viewer is intelligent which is a problem that I have with a lot of anime.

It is clear that this sis a B-movie, and I feel that a show should not be just dismissed for being basic or not being original and Vampire Hunter D is a perfect example of this, the way a B-movie should be done, so thus I say "Enlightenment List".

Option 2
The first thing came in my mind while watching this movie was Animation and atmosphere 10/10 and this score still stands everytime I remember it.
A movie which really define what real vampire movies and anime should look like(looking at you VAMPIRE BUND and BEAUTIFUL Characters academy) with simply outstanding production values. It is Not a sparkling vampire story for prepubescent teens. It has everything a movie of its genre should have which forgone already mentioned but with that being said it doesn't have very strong characters(in development sense) or a story which can really make it enlightening in any sense. Most of the characters are cardboards which you can place anywhere for your convenience. However I will argue about not having any development by the way.You know D's motives and how he works but his actions are not set in the stone.Leila also had a motive for being a vampire hunter so you cant't say Why she is there.Doomed love is played out beautifully.
But a big downhill was, for a action movie fights are really predictable and anti climatic(fight with werewolf for example) and if you have seen better fights in older anime movie Its fights will feel less choreographed and less exiting. Some question about rich man's daughter's actions also rise in my mind while watching it but well.Story plays out too simply for my taste I guess.

2. Unremarkable

Visually it's really good, but plot-wise it was nothing special. It felt more like mindless fun/action like Ninja Scroll, Redline, Hellsing Ultimate and some other Madhouse works. Still a pretty good movie though.
