Violet Evergarden. I have never cried at multiple episodes during a seasonal anime, usually it's at the end like Anohana or YLIA or Angel Beats. Episode 10 is the most relatable episode I have ever seen

Your Lie in April
I know it's kinda cliché but the mixture of the tension, character emotions as long with the music just blend so perfectly to make the ultimate saddest (and beautiful) scene I've ever watched. That scene alone was so perfect it made up for the slow and boring first couple of episodes.
It's crazy i almost dropped the anime but i'm glad i didn't.

As a Honorable mention, Chrono crusade, that end was just a good example of a well made sad End.

Technically Elfen Lied because of how shitty Lucy's life was?

*shrug*

My takeaway were the ketchup fountains, so...

Fuck, I dunno. Someone go though my list and tell me what the saddest thing I watched is.

A Silent Voice since it hits pretty close to home.

Probably Clannad.

Episodes 16, 18 and 21 of After Story was some of the most depressing content I've ever seen. So much so that whenever I hear some of the OST, I can't help but tear up a little. How people can watch this series more than once, is beyond my comprehension.

Violet Evergarden had a couple of episodes as well. Notably Episode 10.

I can only speak for anime I've seen.

Made in Abyss is more horrific than sad (as it deals with a lot of fairly complex themes that are in contrast to it's lighthearted surface coating) so I couldn't say that one.

Angel Beats had it's moments but given that I haven't watched any famously sad anime yet (yeah, I'm working my way round to your Clannad's, your Ano Hana's, your Silent Voice's, etc) I'd have to say the saddest anime for me so far is WataMote. There's something funny and endearing about the way this poor girls crippling social anxiety is presented though that keeps it from being classed as "properly sad", but some of the moments in there are very sad indeed, specially in the eyes of anyone who has any experience with loneliness.

No one here seriously listed "Little Busters: Refrain"? Wow, that's like one of the saddest anime I've watched and I'd even put it up there with Clannad: After Story and Your Lie in April. Little Busters was actually one of the few anime that made me emotional for 3 episodes straight.

Grave of the Fireflies is the one I could never bring myself to rewatch. I can stand Clannad, AnoHana and all the rest, because there's always some kind of relief, but Siscon Convinces Loli Imouto to Run Away with Him is just too much for me.

The typical "sad" anime people usually talk about are depressing but they never really made me cry. The ending of assassination classroom made me sob like a baby though

berserk was going to be my initial answer =(

I haven't watched a lot of sad anime so I guess the saddest I've seen is sorayori (the e-mail scene in one of the last episodes) and HxH (king and snotface for example)

I guess whatsitcalled, fruits basket, its only aim is to be sad and make people cry and I think it does a decent job of it. It gets old fairly quickly (the same way GOT gets old "oh wow, someone died, I so care I swear"-kind of thing) but it's well executed.

Kimi no suizou wo tabetai was also pretty sad. Even though I was expecting it, it stil hit pretty badly.

Can't think of many more anime that were that sad. Sure, some had sad scenes (steins;gate, mushishi, natsume yuujinchou) but from there to "omg saddest anime evah" lolno, not even close. I usually don't actively look for tearjerkers and those considered as such by the community (clannad, angel beats) bored me to death or made me laugh at how bad they were.

This is the correct answer. Next question.

Seriously though. It has to be Clannad. Everyone knows at this point that Clannad is THE sad anime that makes almost everyone cry. I want to mention one more that is a solid runner-up for me at least and that's Violet Evergarden. I'm rewatching right now and it had me tearing up in a few eps, but there's one in particular that comes close to THAT Clannad episode. Big recommend, but it's quite slow. Not for ADD-afflicted.

Saddest anime? I am not sure... but the saddest moment I've seen recently was the ending of one of the Re:Zero episodes, the snowy background, weird music, head chopped off etc. Not sure which episode was it, but I almost cried. Not because of what happened in the anime, but the atmosphere was killing me.

All these sad Anime didn’t get me crying at all. I’d say the only Anime that got me balling was FMA during Hughes’ funeral. It was how Elicia was crying out for him that got me. I even teared up while reading that scene in the Manga. Damn it...

I'm probably missing something, but I'd say 5 Centimeters per Second, Ride Your Wave, A Silent Voice, Your Lie in April. Definitely not anything made by Jun Maeda (e.g. Clannad, Angel Beats, Little Busters, etc.), they're all cheesy as hell.

A Silent Voice really made me cry because I struggled with bullying as a kid and suicidal thoughts. I guess I related to the girl even though I am not deaf. The male character too was interesting...seeing him go from a bully to a friend. It isn't often that we hear stories about bullies being redeemed.
