Man, I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw the headline: "Satoshi Kon, THE Satoshi Kon"? O_o

It's sad that one of the most talented and most dedicated anime directors of this era has passed away. R.I.P.

ANN has a copy of a message titled 'Farewell' that was posted on Kon's official website. In it, Satoshi talks about the day (May 18th) he was told that his cancer was terminal and had spread to his bones. He was also told by doctors that at most, he only had half a year left.

Kon also spoke about meeting with MADHOUSE founder Masao Maruyama about the final anime film he was directing, and said:

When I conveyed my concerns for Yume-Miru Kikai to Mr. Maruyama, he said, "It's fine. Don't worry, we'll do whatever it takes."

I cried.

I cried aloud.

Suffice to say, they will ensure that his final film is completed.

Kon ended his message with:

With feelings of gratitude for all that is good in this world, I put down my pen.

Well, I'll be leaving now.

Satoshi Kon

I wanted to cry buckets over this last part...

I am in tears. I am so glad Madhouse are going to finish his film. I'll look forward to it however long it takes and once it is completed and released, I will watch it and I will love it, and I am sure I'll be in tears by the end. Thank you so much Satoshi Kon and all the staff at Madhouse, and once again, rest in peace.

So, the rumors were true....

R.I.P. for you wonderful works of artistic expression.

Anime sure is dying.

The endless debate between fans and haters. At one point, after spending a lot of time on MAL, you just realize it's totally pointless.

I am incredibly sad and dismayed. I was just re-watching Millennium Actress, my favourite of his works, just last night before I went to sleep.

If his final, unfinished work is ever released, I will be watching it for sure.

R.I.P. Satoshi Kon.

I don't really know what to say. I'm sitting here kind of cuddling my copy of Millennium Actress and I've made up my mind to buy the rest of his work on DVD. I just wish it hadn't taken his death that prompted me to do that.

He was such a brilliant director. I just... he will be missed. It's such a shame. His movies went beyond just 'anime'. They were masterpieces. Genuine films. I never hesitated to recommend his movies to a fellow movie lover like I would any other anime. I hope if they finish his new film, they do proper justice to it and he can have one last masterpiece dedicated to him.

This was absolutely horrible. His work was incredible, and I was really looking forward to a lot more. He was definitely one of the most innovative directors in the industry and a personal favorite.

As if that's not enough, look at what I just stumbled upon

He must have really felt horrible for Maruyama-san, always relying on him.
It's sad for "Dreaming Machine", really it is.
It was a very nice read, I'm still glad that he managed to leave with so few regrets, even if by chance that he lied just to appease everyone's minds, he's done a good job.

To think that last week I re-watched Paranoia Agent entirely in one night and was hoping to see more from him; I didn't even know he already had health problems since early this year, eugh.
Tonight, Paprika in his honor; I've been wanting to rewatch it recently, I guess this will be the good time to do so.

I read about this in the newspaper a few days late. Wow.

May he rest in peace, even though in his final 'goodbye' statement he did express regret about not finishing Yume Miru Kikai and how he worried about the staff as well.

An unfortunate loss.

One of the very few masters working in anime dies an early, painful death.

Meanwhile, thousands of hacks in the industry continue to proliferate their garbage well into their sixties. Depressing, but so very common.

What an unexpected death.

I think I'll watch some of his works really soon (Paprika, Perfect Blue, Millenium Actress, Tokyo Godfathers, Paranoia Agent), as a homage.

RIP.

R.I.P Satoshi Kon. I cried reading your last words- they were so full of humanity and the emotions that all of us feel everyday. Your films 'Millennium Actress', 'Paprika', and 'Tokyo Godfathers' are some of my favorites, and watching some of them were life-changing moments for me. I hope that 'Dream Machine' can be made; If it is, I will definitely watch it, and think, "This is the magic of Satoshi Kon.".
