So I've noticed that going over my list, I've clearly stayed in a close patter of anime's mainly being:
Calm/Comedy/SliceOfLife/School Animes.
I've also noticed that 53 I've completed, only about 4 have blood in it and 4 aren't set in schools. I find it very hard to watch something different like bloody or emotional and I do (but not that much) feel like I'm missing out, but at the same time, when I do find these, I end up not giving it less care/ respect than the ones I'm used to. (End monologue)

How hard did / do you find it trying to get out your box and watch something out or your comfort zone?

I never really got too comfortable with any particular genre. I'm pretty willing to give a chance to most anime. Although I may have to suppress my prejudices towards moeblob "cute girls doing cute things" animu.

It's not really that hard for me since trying things out and see it for myself is my motto...I started watching mostly harem/ecchi shows...but I branched out and as of the present... I have as my top anime... an anime I never thought I'll like.

I pretty much watch all show I think might be fun and can entertain me for hours, not really that guy who like a certain genre. Can watch any genre aside from ecchi the likes of highschool dxd, I rather watch porn than to watch that though I don't hate it or anything, just saying.

I do have my preferred genres, but I am pretty open to anything. It's good to experience other genres, and get out of your comfort zone. Plus, it gets rather tedious and boring to watch a certain genre over and over again. Keep it fresh by exploring other genres.

Same as @InducedPhobia, I also have to control my biased opinions when watching moeblobs, though.

Funny thing is that when I started watching anime, I would only watch horror anime. But now I watch a wide variety of anime (yes, including hentai).
"Yah!" -Tatsumi (Shiki)
"You see, in our society, the phenomenon you call emotions is a mental disorder." -Kyubey (Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica)
"USODA!!!!!" -Rena Ryuugu (Higurashi no Naku Koro ni)

After finishing a series, I switch to an entirely different genre. It's not really that difficult for me since I'm open to every genre.

I don't really have a comfort zone for watching anime since most of them according to their genre, will be the typical stereotype for that anime. An easy example would be ecchi anime. Gonna have the same "plot" with big boobs and lots of panty shots. Which for other people isn't a bad thing, but my point is, is that your comfort zone isn't really challenged really when you're watching the same anime with different settings and "characters."

My box is relatively large. I enjoy most genres or have enjoyed at least one show from many genres. Mainly if a certain genre starts to get stale, I start watching different types of shows. It feels nice to switch it up now and then but when I start enjoying a genre I normally stick with that type of show for a while.

I'm confortable with a lot of things. I'm generally looking for unique art styles, and a a fan of hard sci-fi I try to balance it with episodeic shows, comedies, and a couple ecchis here and there.

Last time I really had to do an effort was for Shoujo Kakumei Utena. I had no problem wiith the whole magical girls thing, but the art style and animation almost made me close the first episode... For, like, 2 minutes.

You should give it a try. It's not so far out of your confort zone (highschool setting, some wtf comedy) but it's definitely not calm or upbeat.

Well, if you have always never enjoy those type of anime, then I don't think you need to force yourself to watch. Only if the series is receiving a lot of praise that's when you could give it a try. Just out of curiosity.

Not that hard to be honest , My outside of the comfort box show would be either Moeblob or Josei but I'm currently watching two shows that are from that genre or tag (K-On! & Shouwa Genroku) and I'm not regretting my decision so far and I'm Sure if the shows are good enough whether its outside my comfort zone or not I will appreciate watching it since I tend to mix things up and watch different kinds of genres at the same time

It's a pretty good box to stay in. There are cute slice of life anime like Shirobako and Idolm@ster that aren't set in school. Magical Girl anime tend to be somewhat similar to CGDCT. Even if you can't seem to actually escape your box there are still some things that are within your reach.

I mostly watch cute stuff, but it doesn't have to be slice of life. I try not to watch two of the same type of show back to back.

I'm fine with most genres so its pretty easy to watch stuff outside of my favourite genres, while there only two genres that I avoid altogether is hentai and horror. I don't find horror fun to watch by myself, just like I don't find horror games fun to play by myself. Whereas hentai I just don't feel comfortable to watch it at all.

The best way to do this is to not have a comfort zone.
Im up for watching anything and I'm also able to critically analyze it and base my judgement on them.
In fact at this point I'm willing to take whatever is thrown at me.

I don't know what comfort zone I have in terms of genres but there are tendencies.
Themes that I like or try to avoid and art / visuals are the main deciding factors.

Sometimes you get outside of your box only to find yourself in a bigger box. As long as there are anime you know about but don't want to watch then you will always be inside some sort of box. It's up to you to decide how big your box will be.

I used to be like this, but now I do the opposite.

I'm afraid of staying inside the box. I want to stretch, to expand my horizons. I try to make every anime I watch to be very different than the last one.

I solved this by deliberately watching things that I wouldn't normally, such as watching all the currently airing shows. I don't typically watch sports but still decided to watch Pride of Stride, for example.
It's an entirely different kind of flying, altogether!

As of like a few years ago my box consisted of literally nothing but generic shounens with the occasional out of genre mainstream show but eventually I ran out of good stuff to watch. I started trying to watch stuff that was out of my norm and found that I could like other things so i rapidly started to watch things from other genres hoping that I would enjoy them which I found out that i did.

Let me tell you a story.
Once upon a time there was a girl who used to watch only sci-fi, thriller, and horror anime.
But one day she decided watch a sports one.
And she ended up fucking loving it.

Never stay in your old box.

If you want to get out of box, try to find best anime for specific genre.

You really dont want to spend time to watch something you didnt like and bad.
Nah, i dont think sharing anime ratings in signature is cool thing.

I deliberately try to watch something not like what I am usually watching about once a month. Sometimes it's because my friends or forum goers tell me something is awesome. Sometimes I just try to be more broad-minded.
Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. But for me, it's easy to start, but I tend to drop those shows in the middle.

When you hit that threshold where you don't enjoy the shows you're picking up, it's really easy to go outside of your comfort zone.

Earlier on I watched A Certain Scientific Railgun to try and get myself into the more action/sci-fi genres, liked the 1st episode.
Then went on to watch A Certain Magical Index, after episode 1 i was like "O.K" but after Episode 2 i was like "Eh, don't think I want to watch it anymore" (Maybe it the blood or fights scenes, it just didn't click).

Happens quite a few times where I try to join 2-3 dots but end up in watching something I dont feel right with and end up back where I started.

The only thing out of my box is hentai and I'm not going there.

Otherwise I really watch anything that makes me interested either for the story, characters, art, seiyuu... I think I am not picky at all, I had my share of slice of life, magic, crazy comedy, blood, sports, romance, sci-fi, drama... And I plan to watch much more~

You have your preferred genres and things you like in Anime. That's not a bad thing :)

However, if you continue this way, watching the same stuff over and over, you may get bored or burnt out, or just run out of good Anime to watch in general. Try deliberately picking Anime you would never consider watching to expand your horizons and go outside your comfort zone. You may be surprised and find something you like that you never thought you would have.
