Why? Haruhi boom on 2006 made people on Japan become otaku. As far as I can say, Haruhi is not that bad, its actually a light fun story and introduce animes archetype, like slice of life, high school theme, that protagonist which his seat near the window, the moe girl, the megane-silent girl, that large eye, and the list go on. But KyoAni fcked the series with the endless 8. You know that adaptation based on LN is increasing since Haruhi aired right?

Haruhi is one probably best watched earlier on yeah. Honestly it's a relatively average anime compared to other SoL, so the sooner someone watches it the better it will seem. The movie however is still amazing!

This is interesting, I would actually suggest Mushishi and Monster as some of the first things to watch. Depends on the person though.

Mushishi is something I could even get my mother to watch (she mostly watches nature documentaries and BBC crime mysteries). Monster is for anyone who can enjoy a good mystery. These don't rain heavy on you with the anime tropes, perfect for getting people slowly used to anime by not throwing the most obscene ones at them first.
If you generalize, you're wrong.

Lucky☆Star for very obvious reason. It require an extensive knowledge of older anime to get the references. Same goes with other works of the smae type like Haiyore! Nyaaruko-san.

You guys and gals care to elaborate why you wouldn't recommend some of the better shows that the anime medium has to offer?
Many of you said you wouldn't recommend Monster, Texhnolyze, SSY, LOTGH, Ergo Proxy, NGE, Ghost in the Shell and plethora of other shows, why is this? Do you think those who are entering the anime medium are dumb, unable to understand symbolism and metaphors, or that they're kids perhaps?
Perhaps you shouldn't recommend shows that have Japanese references/folk stories to them, i.e. Mushishi and Mononoke, but to say you wouldn't recommend shows that have no or very little Japanese reference and don't recommend them is, I don't know, stupid or insulting maybe to their intelligence.

I'd say I wouldn't recommend starting with ecchi and harem, because most of them are your counterpart of Western mediocre tv shows.
And Gintama probably due to the sheer amount of references that it use to other anime shows.

I think NGE is very good for newbies. For all of its mind-bending psychological stuff, it's a very fun show that lays out a lot of common cliches. It's not the most accessible thing, but it's attention-grabbing and will make someone want to explore more.

Lol I also watched a mushishi episode with my mom. She liked a part where a baby starts crying opening a mouth bigger than his face.

Anything content-questionable by normies standards, I guess.
Like Fate/Kaleid. Mostly Fate/Kaleid. And Fate/Kaleid.
Also, for equally obvious reasons, huge franchises that requires a lot of commitment to finish and series that require a lot of medium knowledge.

I don't get why so many people are listing dramas and dialogue-heavy stuff.
Mushishi? Wtf?
Folks, there's a lot of that in western mediums and even more on literature. As long as you're not some underage cancer, seeing that animated won't make a difference. I'd actually be glad if I was introduced to anime by something like Gunslinger Girl or Satoshi/Mamoru movies, this way I'd know from the start that there's more to this medium than the battle shounen popular stuff.

The Tatami Galaxy. I watched it a month and something ago and I could barely catch up with the subs - they literally flashed out before I could read them. I hardly managed to read a whole sentence throughout the entire series and I needed to rewatch the show, pausing after each spoken line, in order to read the subs. No need to say it was boring and I doubt a newbie would be eager to stop the video every now and then, in order to understand what it is about. It would only alienate them from Anime in the end.
