Hello everyone! The top 5 most nominated members have been tallied. IMPORTANT! Remember to check out the user's actual list before voting. Screencaps, if they are done by me are at a resolution of 1280 x 800 (a laptop). Iri's list especially suffers from this low resolution. Same goes for Ranivus to some extent. Talon ![]() Ranivus ![]() Kanashimi ![]() Iri ![]() Krelian ![]() BEFORE VOTING CHECK OUT THE MEMBERS' LISTS BY CLICKING ON THE SCREENSHOT! Vote in the poll for who you think has the best list design. You do not need to post to say who you voted for, but you can if you really want to. Up to you. Voting closes on the 29th of February at 10 PM GMT + 10. Congratulations to all participating members and our top 5! Be sure to vote. In two weeks the winner will be announced. Be sure to take part in the signature designs also! Random Note: This poll is made up of the usual participants in these contests. The newer members have no chance any longer (since these guys have a lot of experience and are fairly well known around here...). Maybe I should make a newcomers category... |

Hmm, well, that sounds like it might be rather difficult to manage. Maybe people who win should be ineligible for future contests? Or for a few rounds, at least? I dunno... I do agree that it's rather difficult to garner much support if people aren't already familiar with your work (through prior contests or intentional campaigning) |

Good luck to everyone, and I kinda agree with Crystal when trying to get people known that haven't been around. I think it might be easier if was organized it some way though, doing two contests seems though. |

seriously, when I look at those thumbnails my list is complete the oposite then the other lists with the feeling. My own list makes me smile when I look at it.. maybe it's because it's my own, maybe because it has happiness and carelessness in it when the other themes are build on emotinal and in mind agonized characteristics. my list isn't cool... it's warm (and colorful!!) :P I voted myself because my nominations didn't made it into the final round (and I really wonder why o_o) |

no offence, i still dont understand the greatness of krelians list... its color coded and it has a picture (a low qual at that) ...a few ppl told me because "spike is hawt" if that is the only reason why thats going to win so be it but ill be a bit sour coz i lost to a "popular character" xD btw good luck yall... i still havent voted so my vote is up for grabs still.. EDIT: oh and for that thing that crystal said about having all the same ppl over and over again, i agree with that, could at least make a rule where the mal nominees from the previous "mal award" should not be eligible. or something to that extent |

For best actual design, I voted Rani despite not much caring for Lain (I haven't even finished it, each episode feels like a bad acid trip >.<) though I like the -look- of Iri's best, it seemed to really lag up the tab in FF for some reason... which really shouldn't happen with a modern CPU, let alone a dualcore. Seeing this sort of stuff makes me want to do something with my list. But the effort seems far too excessive. ^^; |

It ended up being a toss-up between Kana and Krelian. I would have voted for Iri's list, but that 'wall' thing on the bottom left irritated me. I went ahead and voted Krelian. Sorry Kana! >.< |

If I could ask, what is the version of FF you are using? I'm guessing the latest official one. It's sort of hard to believe, but that lag you're experiencing is from one small 60kb animated GIF that is highly optimized. One surprising thing I discovered in making this list is that Firefox 2 has a documented flaw in scenarios like this. I watched processor loads closely before I put the list up and I noticed on mine that IE and Opera w/ the Kestrel rendering engine hovered at 2-3% usage while FF2 went up around 20%, and I'm running a C2D at nearly 3Ghz, so this worried me, as FF seems to be the browser of choice here. Luckily version 3 of FF fixes this and keeps it right at IE/Opera levels. I guess I was hoping FF 3.0 would go final before I put up the list! Doh! Anyway, sorry about your troubles, and many thanks to all who take the time to look and vote, regardless of whom you choose! |

But the tab still responds very sluggishly. Mouse wheel scroll doesn't seem to work at all on it, either. o.O |

Either that or you could also implement the rule that people could not be nominated more than twice in a row (Meaning at the 3rd contest they would be ineligible if they had previously entered the top5 of the last 2).Crystal said: Random Note: This poll is made up of the usual participants in these contests. Talon cheats, as always =P, and I'd normally vote for him. But since I nominated Kana, and her list is also really good (dispite the fact that I'm unable to click the anime links - and I highly dislike that ^^) I'm gonna vote for her. Rei is always win, and smooth colors are always win. |

Yeah. I wouldn't vote for a list just because it has a char I like. This competition is supposed to be about list design, right? Of the selected entries I think Ranivus' is the best designed. A nice balance of simplicity and aesthetics, not too munch of one or the other. Thus it's a nicely designed list. Even though I don't like Lain. |

Ranivus said: no offence, i still dont understand the greatness of krelians list... lol opinions I voted for it because it has a surreal feel, the colors are good, and the headers are well done. Also, I think the background was meant to look like that. I don't know, maybe I'm just weird, but I vote for the one that looks the best to me, not the one that has the most complex CSS or the one that has the fanciest effects. |

I'm not offended in the least, just pointing out that it looks kinda bad to be questioning the quality of your competition in the middle of a contest. Anyway, people usually just vote for what they like (though some vote more based on who they're friends with, perhaps), but people always have differing tastes. Some people like dark themes, others like light ones; some people like complexity, others like to keep it simple. Subject matter seems to play a pretty big role too. I don't really understand why one thing turns out more popular than another any more than you do - I just don't let it bother me =P With things like this, it's better just to make something that you're happy with and have fun. So yeah, let's just have fun =D |

Very nice observation, especially the fun part. For me, it's always interesting just to see how different people approach the same basic "problem/challenge" over and over. In the end, though, I think it's very important not to forget the "M" in MAL. Express yourself the way you want to -- otherwise you're best just leaving everything on the defaults it came with. |

Woah rani, don't be so sore? I would love to "raep him" or whatever you say... But that is not why I nominated and voted for Krelian. I don't see why you're such a sore loser.. it really is all about the fun. if you REALLY want to know the appeal, I love how the sketchy-blurry-ness contrasts with that brilliant glowing green. The picture is not "low quality", it was made like that. Not everything has to be crazily vectored. Stuff like that gets boring all the time to see; sometimes I like some artistic flare. AND I did not vote for Krelian because I like him more than any of the other list designers (who I like the most is a hi-mi-tsu ^_~)... Nor was it about characters.. Hell, I love Kanashimi's list but I don't like particularly Eva (and have not finished it).. and I have no idea where Talon's list comes from.. and I did not like lain but I special mentioned you as well... for me it's about the list design. I don't care about CSS (to an extent), I see lists as pieces of art which must also function (which is where kana lost a point and Iri lost.. all the points because.. I cannot even scroll xD) I also really love everyone's list... except iri's as I was saying (I am using firefox + mac..... I cannot scroll down on your list, this is the first time I have not been able to properly see a list.. even your one piece list I could see perfectly meh) .. just, stop bitching about it. (And this is why I am glad I am not in the competition :D) edit: but of course, I still love you Iri, since Maaya wins, and you know it :D Plus, I've enjoyed many of Iri's lists. xD I wish the pokemon list was still around hahahahhahaha |

I was able to replicate it on FF2+Mac and the best I can tell is that it's a DIV issue w/ FF2 like Talon noted above. Oh, well, I'll try harder next time. That Pokemon list does need to go back up -- the fun lists are always better. ![]() |

hrm... lil comment @ Talon´s list : I kinda love the artwork and the list design is plain but fits it... there are things I don´t realy like ( header, the pictures above the score, type, progress rows ) because I don´t think they fit in... the header in particular just doesn´t seem to live up to the background you used... again... the real beauty in this list lies in the coding ( as I think ) ... I don´t know if others even notice... but I tried to fiddle around with some of the stuff you used and I know it´s hard... pretty fucking hard ( and as it seems impossible to do with css2 )... And I just have to love the way you changed the header =D ( that stupid thing took all my interest in list design... ) All together it´s a plain but beautyfull list design which ( as many others do ) doesn´t sacrifice being an anime list for design and keeps a good balance between being usefull and looking good... lil comment @ Ranivus´s list : First thing that came to me... "Header waayyy to big" ... but then I noticed it´s not that much bigger than others ( I still think this one as well as all the others are too big... but this one seems even bigger ) Second thought was "Lain ftw yays!!" ... and then I startet looking at the list... Much like Talons this one is plain but functional and ( in my eyes ) good looking... the black & white list suits the mood and the idea of using animated pieces is just brilliant and works very very well with the whole "lain feeling" ... only thing I would change is the color of the background(s) you used... I think a black & white image would´ve been even better... It looks a bit like a great idea for a list searched for a background but didn´t find one it liked and took whatever was available... The white border of the list "helps" the idea that the list doesn´t have much to do with the background... sad thing... lil comment @ Kanashimi´s list : "This list has been made private by the owner. Only they may view it." ... jeah... that was probably a very good idea... I mean... I can totaly vote for you now... lil comment @ Iri´s list : Nice picture... But I had a hard time to find the actual LIST that this one´s supposed to be... Could be because the header just about fills every bit of space you can see if your resulutions not high enough to see that the list shows up below the picture... Or could be because even if you, by accident, scroll down and notice something changes you can harly read anything... I´m all in for matching colors or z-index experiments... But they both come with some problems and you managed to get full score on "how to not use these two"... First of all... if you put an image in front of text or whatever... it realy "will" be in front of them... and regardles being transparent enough for the viewer to look at whatever lies behind... every browser I know has this habit of not letting you do a lot of stuff with whatever is behind the pictures ( because basicly you can´t see them... ) So... in terms of usefullness your list should be around and below zero at this point because it´s not even possible to use links at most places... And the little detail that I noticed you had a "process" collumn just as I was testing "where" you could use links kinda showed me just how "big" the images you used where... Don´t get me wrong... I still like the picture and little details like a fake mirror image of the list in the water and tiny animations... But I was under the impression that this was a contest for "Anime List" Designs... And while the whole "Design" thing was done very well... there´s not much of an "Anime List" in here... lil comment @ Krelian´s list : I can only think of "old school" right now... every list ( at least the ones I could watch ) in here had something special about it... Talon has his little funny thing with torturing css ( in a good way ) Rani had this little animation thing going... And Iri´s list was just one big explosion of effects and toying around with different ways of taking the list css to it´s limit... This one just has a background, matching list colors and some headers for each categorie... it´s something allmost everyone could do, and yet it all fits together perfectly... Maybe it´s because there´s not much there to begin with... but I can´t find anything about this list that doesn´t fit or seems odd... it´s a list, as plain as it can be and that´s all there is to it... So... wrote what was on my mind ( simply because I think it´s not fair to just go and post the name you voted for without ever telling what made you choose this one over the others ) and allthough I think that won´t happen I hope that noone´s angry at me right now for what I said... Lastly... my vote goes to Krelian´s list... Because allthough I, as allways, love the way Talon´s list looks and realy liked some ideas in Ranis list, this one just kinda stood out for me... As I said all the others had something to make them special... this one was just a good looking list without flaws... and that´s what made it special for me... It shows how you can still manage to make a good looking list without having to study cascading style sheet´s to the point where you could´ve invented it... |
