God that CG is bad, Toei, you should've kept the transformation sequences 2D like in Precure.

I was really liking it in till the CG started to become too apparent.... why is CG starting to run so rampant in anime these days? I mean, it's not like it can't work if used sparely, but I think they over did it here. I think it would have been really great if they hadn't relied on the CG so heavily.

funny - usualy Toei is great with CGI (Precure endings for example) but here it's just... well it's based on manga and I don't expect much here so no problem :P

at least I won't be dissapointed.

The CG was not as bad as I thought it would be after reading the comments... But yeah, gonna need some getting used to for a while. The movement choreo and effects looks really gorgeous though, 20 yrs difference is so obvious huh?

It isn't that the CGI is bad, it's just it's too jarring when the rest is 2D.

new opening animation... need to watch in hd :D! Anyway expected the new transformation to be alot worse when I heard it was 3-d cg but it was pretty decent, but still kinda wanted a awesome sakuga animation instead.. Toei were always pretty decent with 3-d cg so I'll probably get used to it.

Personally, the CGI looks really out of place what with everything else being 2D. Feels cheap and honestly it's visually unappealing.

Only in mal would a top of the line computer animation procedure would be considered "cheaper" as 2d stock footage.Only in mal.

Anyway, the comparisons do not really matter since we will see the sequence itself once maybe twice through the whole show - same for the others.

It could be worse:

Having mixed feeling about the CGI transformation I still voted for the new one. I agree, that it's a bit weird / awkward here and there, but I think it's only a matter of habit. I watched it a few times and start to like it, especially the music :D As long as they don't stuff the Anime with tons of long CGI sequences every episode (so far they are only present shortly in the opening and transformation sequence), then it's ok to me.

I don't like the fact that the new scene is even longer than the first one, 60 seconds compared to 72 seconds or something like that.

The time difference only gets bigger when you consider that the transformation scenes will be longer for the other Sailors as well.

I admit Sailor Moon looks kind of stringy and it is a bit disconcerting. With that said, transformation scenes were never important to my experience watching Sailor Moon anyway, so it's not a big deal.

Which matters fuck-all since Manga, after first one or two cases, just has them insta-transform or appear in the scene already transformed.

I've only seen the anime and they always include transformation scenes every episode. Even if they skipped the scenes in the manga, I doubt they will do that here. Especially since they took the time to use CGI and 3-d effects. Well, in the end we can only wait and see to find out. Only a couple days left :D

Considering they will most likely cover the first two story arcs and they have total of 26 30 min episodes(~1-1.5 chapter per episode), that barely gives them time enough to spend ~13 episodes per story arc(~12-13 episodes for Sailor Moon and ~12-13 for Black Moon). AND the first arc has to include SailorV backstory one way or the other. There's no space to waste. And it would not fit tone-wise for ~70% of the content after the introductory phase.

Which yet again would not fit tone-wise.
Kajiura Yuki-esque chorus of doom is more fitting.

The new one looks like it's from Miku Miku Dance or something. :P

Honestly, I think part of the appeal of the original Sailor Moon is that it's so 90s. When you lose that 90s aesthetic, it takes away a lot of the charm of the original.

They have really doner sailor moon a disservice with this. I mean, apart from her being waaaaaaaay too thin, the CGI looks damn cheap. They should have blown some extra money on a high quality 2d animation fitting the legacy.

I mean, compare this with the nanoha transformations (TV version vs. movies). THAT's how you do it.

Older one is better, without a doubt.
They should have just made the CGI (or something at least similar to it), then trace over it so the animation isn't as obvious and cheap-looking.

Like most said, the old one. And I wonder if they use it in every episode since in the manga it's not in every chapter. So I don't understand why they decided to go with CGI.

And if they decided to go with CGI for the transformation, then the attacks may end up in the same fate.

I will miss the old music.

I hope the attacks won't be rendered in CGI. If they have 2D characters performing 3D attacks, I imagine that will break up the flow of animation.

Yeah, I'll miss the old music too. I hope they plan to include a re-mix of Moonlight Densetsu somewhere in the anime. That's one of the things I've been looking forward to in Crystal.

Toei improved a lot over the pasty ears (look at pretty Cure!) but I have to agree.
I prefer the old transformation as well, simply because it is more consistent, doesn't stick out from the rest of the series' style as far as we can judge that for now and is.. well.. not CGI.

No metter what they do, the old will always be better. I'm sorry, I can see they tried, but the old one is a classic. I was wondering if I should even watch this new version since I'm an old fan. I will watch it but all the CGI and the new music....I don't know...What was wrong with Moon Desentsu? It was great, they should have just made a cover.... Yes, I am biased towards the old one :D

Personally I don't think it's Sailor Moon without Moonlight Densetsu. Perhaps it'll be used as the ED song or something. All I know is they better have the song somewhere in the series.

I like the new OP as well though. The animations are good and I'm sure I'll warm up to the vocalists as I hear the OP every episode. We don't have long to wait now. There's less than 3 hours until it airs!~

It sounds a bit too much like a Precure transformation tune. It's better suited for an upbeat cutesy show like that, but Sailor Moon had a softer feminine charm to it.

Take the ending theme for example for the original Sailor Moon anime, it was relaxing and gorgeous.
Precure ED themes on the other hand are full of energy and as many a video shows, the kids dance in front of the TV during.

Odd though that even Precure doesn't use CGI for their stock transformations.

It's mal.

MAL rules:
Everything cgi is evil.
Everything progressive is evil. God forbid someone adds same sex relationships to the show.
Characters showing human emotions makes them whiny. Especially if they are female.
For character to be cool he/she has to be sociopath with no human empathy nor logical human reactions to its surroundings.
If the show does not have moe or lolis its not a good show.
If its not an overrated LN adaptation. Its not a good show.

Considering the original true sailor moon, not counting messed up anime adaptation, is still one of the most gender-norm-breaking things japan ever written, that's okay.

The transformation has to be elegant, not really "feminine". We have girls dressing like boys, girls dressing like girls, girls liking girls, girls liking boys, girls liking both, boys transforming into girls and vice-versa, etc.

The scout transformations draw inspiration from tokusatsu shows and shonen genre. It IS supposed to be brash and energetic. The scouts do not throw pretty hearts at villains or redeem them(despite what previous adaptation tried to show you)with love - they stab you with swords and kill the fuck out of you with elemental attacks.

I usually like CGI, but good CGI, and the transformation CGI was not good... I mean, stick with the animation you had from the beginning. Suddenly changing really does hurt the eyes and it doesn't fit... And the original duration was fine and it had covered all essential parts, but this one is too long.

I am continuing to remain cautiously optimistic that the reboot will be good (it was a pretty blase first episode, but it absolutely was true to the manga--to the point where numerous shots were exact imitations of manga panels--and so I'm holding out hope that it could get good).....but the one major complaint I had was the new transformation sequence. It's just -bizarre-. Others have mentioned the spaghetti arms, but also the bit where her boots appear and she looks like a robot? The old transformation sequences (for all the senshi) were so beautiful and artistic, and this just looks....like a kid playing around with computer graphics.

I guess if the transformation sequence is the worst thing about it, I shouldn't complain, eh? (But oh, the transformations are such a big part of it! As a kid, they were one of my -favorite- things about the original. And we know we'll see it again and again...and again.)
