Hello!! Sorry for the late reply but I'm really glad to hear you enjoyed the show!! I was a bit nervous i may have dropped the ball so that made me happy! I hope you had great holidays as well and i wish you a great rest of the year!!

Hello there!

Reading your comment made me very happy. Thank you for the feedback. I’m so glad you ended up liking Sora yori mo Tooi Basho, as it is one of my absolute favorites. When I first came across the show, I wasn’t really expecting much out of it. But as you said, the cast is surprisingly complex. Once I started watching, I couldn’t stop. I binge-watched it, too! The Antarctica adventure was definitely the hype factor, but the main quartet carried the story by themselves right to the very end. I adore all the girls, particularly Shirase, but I totally understand why you were drawn to Hinata. She is the biggest surprise out of the four.

Hopefully you will like Saraiya Goyou, too! I wouldn’t dare say that it is as good as Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu, but it's quite similar in mood, with the main cast having complicated backstories and relationships...

High five for the shared love for Oniisama e… (Utena and Natsume, too)! Old school shoujo at its finest, hands down… And I think the elves took notice of that and matched us for the exchange^.^ Actually… I first thought about recommending Glass no Kamen instead of Saraiya Goyou, but as the show has over 50 episodes, I decided against it. But yes, now that we’re talking about it, I really think you should give it a chance! Despite its flaws (outdated story-telling, an inconclusive ending, characters that feel quite two-dimensional at times), I believe Glass no Kamen to be one of the best shows revolving around performing arts out there... Acting is not my forte, but I personally felt like the series managed to beautifully convey what it is like to perform and the world of theatre in general.

Once again, thank you for passing by and letting me know what you thought about the recs! Happy New Year!

Ciao from Italy!
Thank you very much for all your effort in recommending an anime, I really appreciate that. I already watched the first episode of Shoujo Kakumei Utena and I'm quite intrigued by the characters and the sudden events but I must say that it was quite difficult to find a decent version of the anime online ahahahah
Anyway, thank you again and happy new year!

I don't know why, but I imagined that you did the details, which only makes it more impressive. And that's a good and long hair you have (unlike me, hehe). The most recognisable character to cosplay is probably the girl who throws cigarettes after two smokes to suddenly jump from a 2nd floor and start running and laughing (Rei), but outfits in that anime are pretty unremarkable in general.

I don't know who I would cosplay as. A friend once told me in a non-serious tone to work up and cosplay as a League of Legends character with him, but I have never considered it because I don't know how to sew. Knowing myself, if someone came from the future and told me that I am going to cosplay I'd assume I either followed someone's suggestion and cosplayed with them or I did some joke character cosplay (I'm thinking of a certain cartoon series about my home "state", I think it's not available anywhere anymore).

I believe Shoujo Kageki's BDs are soon to come, a friend and I are waiting for them to make suggest a friend in common (who pretty much only watches shounen, except for a couple shows we watched together) to watch the anime. Airing quality is a bit weird in some places, and they'll probably improve it by then. We haven't watched the Live Action yet, and it will probably take a while for us to start because of exams and my friend going to Japan right after.

I wouldn't want to simulwatch Yagate in particular, but gathering that many people to watch a yuri anime must make it pretty enjoyable. I don't think I've ever simulwatched anything with more than 5-6 people (not counting in the cinema, duh), 15 is a good number to have at a regular basis. How do you expect to gather more members to such a niche irl community?

It's not that we don't celebrate Valentine's Day. We know it exists, couples are supposed to take notice of it, but for the rest of mortals it's another day, I guess? Maybe I'm biased, because I always have exams by the time Valentine's Day comes.

Ups, I assumed someone in your group with pink hair would have to cosplay as Matsuri, my mistake. >_<

I can't say if the cosplay was you being lazy or not, but Mei probably didn't have a lot of characteristic things to work on to begin with, so the ending result looks quite good based on the pics you sent me (in my non-trained eyes for cosplay). The other two look like they have a lot of work, it's actually quite impressive. I especially like the Versailles no Bara cosplay, seeing it there must have been quite the sight, even if I would probably not ask for a picture because I almost never do that. D: I thought about watching the anime back in summer 2017 after actually going to Versailles, but I thought 40 episodes were too many (and I started Onii-sama e... in early December later that year, but then again, I'm still getting used to my own shaky thought process).

34K people going to an anime convention. I can't even imagine that. To put it into perspective, I live in one of the most populated cities in Spain, and its local soccer club can't hold that many people inside. It is also more than half the population of my birthplace.

There was an anime convention for a couple of years next to where I live (~45 min on foot) that I used to enjoy a lot with friends, but there was also a gaming event that used to take place at the same location a couple weeks later. That event, that has a pretty bad reputation for people who are not into mainstream because it is only aimed for standard popular games for teenagers, made a dirty move on them and now they can't run it anymore. T_T To add insult to injury, now they have their own anime convention with the same problem as the gaming one, which by the way is the only big-ish anime convention in a 2 hour drive radius from where I live, and they don't even have activities separated from the stage. Tough luck.

Oh, are there enough yuri series to watch every two weeks? I assume you also consume other media, if it's only anime you probably have it rough to find a different series every time you meet. That, or I'm quite bad at finding yuri, which is quite likely.

Your club looks like it's a good excuse to meet with friends and have something to do. Just for curiosity's sake, how many people are there in your club?. I don't think I've ever seen a Valentine card in my entire life, so it must be fun writing them to friends depending on the context. As for Christmas in the Park, I had to look up what it was. Correct me if I'm wrong, but from what I found it looks like it's a park in which they have entertainment for "the whole family", which is a really good excuse to hang out with friends. There is a smaller scale event here where I live in which they do a little spectacle with the decoration lights they put in the city centre (of pretty much every city around Christmas), but also with music. I think you'll understand better if I just show you https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yD_4FgBU9d4.

As for dark shows that I have watched in your PtW, I was thinking mainly about Kaiba. It's certainly not dark looking, but the story is certainly harsh. People die like flies, but the way they die is not explicitly violent at all, you should be ok if you're not triggered by knowing what really happens to them (and it's by no means a secret, they tell you in the first or second episode, so you can decide yourself). Aoi Bungaku is a series of famous old Japanese novels with dark themes adapted in a not good but it's bearable way: they could certainly have done it better, but at least you can see that the source material was good (I don't remember it being violent, but it wasn't very memorable so I could be wrong). You probably know about Cowboy Bebop, but about how violent it is, it has some "general mafia" violence, with gun fights and people dying from them in some episodes, but I don't remember anything extravagant. Katanagatari is more weird than dark, but I think it will fit your tastes of a psychological, mature show that is not too violent: characters are slashed and killed, but it's not more violent than any random shounen out there. Rokka no Yuusha isn't a show that I liked, but I have friends who did, so at least make sure you don't watch the airing version (it looks awful). It's also a dark show that I believe wasn't violent, and it could be defined as a psychological... thriller?, so it's what you were looking for genre-wise. Sora no Woto is not dark, but I have to mention it because (sorry for the light spoiler) it doesn't have soldiers just for show. I don't remember it too well, which is why I'm rewatching, but at least last night's episode showed a couple of somewhat violent scenes in a vague yet explicit way. I don't know how much they would trigger your problem, because it's less than 10 seconds and I don't think it's that much, but you should probably ask someone who knows your problem better than me.

Oh, and I have heard that Paranoia Agent is an episodic anime that most of the time has violence in episode setting. You may want to know that before you decide to watch it.
Conde_Mohr Jan 16, 2019 10:26 AM
Hey, those pics look neat. It seems that you know what you're doing when you cosplay. Did you make the school uniform or was it bought? I think cosplaying must be fun, but I don't see myself doing it because I'm not good at anything remotely related to artistic matters. xD By the way, the Matsuri photographer is missing her headphones. :P

I can imagine why you didn't like Citrus, because you don't look like someone who likes too much "girl on girl action" in yuri, but it did a lot to make yuri a bit more mainstream. I liked it until I eventually forgot who was who, and read it mainly by inertia, but it was still enjoyable.

It must be pretty frustrating, being physically (or psychologically) unable to do something you love. At least there are dark shows in your PtW without much explicit violence that you may like, so you can at least circumvent the problem most of the time. :/

How big was that anime convention to have hundreds of people at a presentation? The ones I've been in rarely have those numbers. I'm glad that you went ahead and spread the word, and even got some friends out of it. Being in a niche community makes it hard to find people to talk about your stuff, but it's more rewarding when you do so, which is why you made the right call ^_^ (a yuri presentation at university? Is that even allowed/possible?). By the way, what do you do in a yuri irl community?
Conde_Mohr Jan 7, 2019 1:34 PM
Sorry for the late reply, I was on a trip and writing the first message on my phone was already tiring, so I decided to wait until I got home to write using my computer.

For the Secret Santa event, there are some people (elves) who basically take every sign-up form, match people to recommend each other, write PMs, help santas with their presents, quality check the presents sent and ask the santas to change them if they're not good enough, write back-up presents for missing or bad presents and also write some notes for those with missing information, then send them to everyone. It's a taxing job, but it's fun in its own way (if only we were more people...). Taking a look at the sign-up forms, what bothered me the most were not people not willing to even try to watch something, but those who watched the likes of Citrus or Sakura Trick and ask for yuri as if all yuri was like that. The person I had to recommend was someone asking for yuri manga, and he had two cards of almost naked female characters in his about me. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The reason why I think that our lists are compatible only partially is because most anime you like I do like too, and the same can be said the other way around. You can't stand violence, and I am relatively fine with it if not for the fact that it tends to bore me if it's not well made. But your tastes are more shoujo-esque than mine, while I tend to enjoy cute girl shows more than you. As for the "same shows we both like", it seems to me that you like them more for the drama, while I tend to enjoy the slice of life, or at least that's what the scores tell me.

I don't really remember what I was going to recommend you, but I know it wasn't easy to recommend you, especially given how most things that I could considered were already in your Plan to Watch list. I'll simply think about you recommendation again and see what I get. In your sign up form you asked specifically for "psychological thrillers with no violence". Ufff. What can be considered "acceptable violence" is very relative to the person, especially when it comes to someone you don't know, so I don't dare to pry on there when I'm not especially knowledgeable about those.

You also seem to want a good rom-com, and that's another genre I don't tend to like because the comedy part usually falls flat to me. Nevertheless, Tonari no Seki-kun has a perfect formula for me that may attract you as well. This anime is, properly speaking, a pure comedy genre anime about a high school girl (Rumi) who sits next to a male classmate (Seki) who gets bored in class quite often, so he plays some games to entertain himself. Despite Rumi's efforts to keep paying attention in class, she always ends up sucked into Seki's game. As a teacher, I do think you will relate to what happens there, even if Seki's games are not what normal students do when they're bored in class. Short episodes and very good voice acting keep the anime from getting boring, since you don't have time to get tired of the joke before the episode has ended. Even if it's not a rom-com, there are also romance hints in it. The romantic hints are very pure and realistic, without all the tropes that plague romance anime, I do think you will enjoy that part too. I like taking risks when making a recommendation, but feel free to take a look if you're interested. I'll save you the wall of text for other recommendations, especially inside your PtW list and leave it at that.

As a non-homosexual man, my yuri knowledge and interest doesn't go as far as yours. I usually like most of its tropes, and how it is easier for it to explore different sides of love. That eventually translated to me liking yuri as a whole, but I never investigated it that far. It looks interesting, nonetheless, how a country that doesn't accept homosexuality can have so much popular fictional content about those, and even how yuri/yaoi fans wouldn't accept a friend telling them they're homosexual. When I first saw Yuri Kuma Arashi, I hadn't watched any yuri at all, and I didn't know its context and intentions. Now that I have read a bit about both the anime and the context of the anime, I do have the intention to eventually rewatch it even if its weak parts will probably stay there.

I didn't know yuri communities with a decent number of people involved existed irl, because yuri doesn't look like a widely spread genre at all. I consider myself fortunate to have one friend who has watched a ton of anime and also likes yuri, so we could comment on the latest Citrus chapter or simulwatch Asagao to Kase-san when it came out. Unfortunately, there are not a lot of yuri anime out there, and MAL doesn't even tag those who exist, so I can't really watch a lot of it.

Lastly, and sorry for the wall of text, I do think it would be interesting to watch the presentation. Don't worry about searching for it if it's not easy to find, I am not THAT interested if it becomes a chore, but I've never seen a yuri panel at a convention (not that I've been in a lot of big conventions to begin with). I think the most yuri related things I've done in one were taking a pic with a Strawberry Panic cosplayer and seeing how my friend bought a Citrus poster she can't even show her parents. xD

I think i watched it on YouTube, but if you like it, just go read the manga, it's much better.

Hi, dreamerofpluto. You probably don't know who I am, but I was an elf who helped with the MAL Santa Event you participated in. Initially, I wasn't going to write you, but there were people who told me I should (even the great Kineta-sama), so let me tell you my story.

When I first saw your sign-up form, I thought it was interesting to see someone who loves yuri even more than I do, and knows a lot about it (even giving conferences! I doubt they're stored anywhere I can see, though). Most people who mentioned yuri in their likes were pretty much only there for cute girls making out with each other, or maybe only knew a couple of shows. The rest of your profile looked interesting, and I see that your tastes align with mine only partially, leaving a lot of room to discover new things.

For that reason, I really wanted to recommend/be recommended by you. But when I was put in charge of matching R5 (the "big boys" from elf-chama), I noticed that you were in a different pool than me. I paired you with the best of my ability (I saw quite a few messages talking about how much they liked their recipient, including yours), and recommendation period started.

But wait! There was still an out! If your santa didn't show up after the recommending period I was free to make a back-up recommendstion. A week passes and it turns out that your santa didn't send a recommendation. First thing when I woke up, I asked anyone available to put my name in your back-up recommendation. When I was available, I started thinking about what to recommenf you, then wrote a 2-3 paragraph with more or less the same I'm writing now with the addition of some joke sentences like "destiny brought us together", and took a small break to look at Discord. And there was someone who didn't make it in time but wanted to give their recipient a present. That person turned out to be your santa. I let her write the recommendation and send it to me so that I could post it as hers, and that was what you received in the end. I haven't watched xxxHolic myself, but from what I was told, I think it's a pretty good pick for you, and I can see you're liking it so far.

And that's basically it, I hope you enjoyed my little stalker story. Happy 2019 :]
KingYoshi Aug 7, 2017 12:30 PM
Thanks for the information. I will definitely be checking out Fingersmith soon. And yeah, I loved Gakkougurashi. Mii-kun is awesome!
KingYoshi Aug 4, 2017 11:33 AM
I was wondering how much sex/nudity is in Fingersmith? I'm hoping there is not as much as there was in, The Handmaiden. I have a friend I wanted to watch it with, but she really isn't into too much on screen sex. Anyway, thanks in advance!
Alcoholicide Feb 18, 2017 11:31 PM
That's a nice bit of trivia, Kaoru-no-kimi being named after a character of genji Monogatari.

And yeah, I'll let you know. Will probably finish it next weekend. Been simulwatching it with a friend on MAL and she's usually only free on the weekends, but this weekend I was busy so we didn't get to watch any Oniisama e. Can't wait for next weekend tho :>.

It is definitely rare to see fans of it. Usually only the hardcore fans even know about it. It's old-ish, and it's shoujo so those two reasons alone make like 90% of the community not even look at it. But then again I have favorites who are even less popular so I can't really complain. I think I had 3 people randomly comment on my profile about the show since I started it, that's more than every other show I've watched ^^.
Alcoholicide Feb 18, 2017 10:23 PM
Hm, I mean Joe is a 'manly' work, but I wouldn't say it's full of machismo in the same way Cobra or Golgo 13 are. It also has a pretty great female side character. You should give it a try at some point, it really deserves the status of a 'classic'.

And yeah I know that about Genji Monogatari, but I didn't know you were familiar with it and ' some kind of historical harem' is more or less what the synopsis on MAL says so I figured I'd bring it up ^^. Being famous and all is great but it still doesn't make the synopsis sound very appealing to me which is why I haven't seen it yet xD.
Alcoholicide Feb 17, 2017 4:05 PM
My two personal favorites are probably Ashita no Joe and Ie Naki Ko. The former is a drama about a boxer, about poverty, rivalry and growing up and it's very tragic but has some of the best characters in all of anime in my opinion. The latter is based on a french novel and depicts the journey of a young boy traveling europe as a street performer in the company of various other characters. It's a wonderful series without age limitations and has some of both the saddest and most heartwarming and rewarding scenes I've seen. It also has fantastic backgrounds, so colorful and vibrant that it's hard to believe they are from the 70s.

There is also Takarajima which I really loved because it's a great adventure series that actually includes pirates which is a rare thing in anime outside of One Piece. Very enjoyable show as well.

The Black Jack OVAs are also very good, easily the most mature part of the franchise and more serious in tone overall. If you like Tezuka, Black Jack or just creative medical dramas it's definitely a great show to watch.

Space Cobra is a campy and pulpy sci-fi series with lots of machismo, cool lines, sexy babes and style. Not sure if your thing but I quite enjoyed it, I just love these kind of aimless adventures and sci-fi is a nice bonus.

Golgo is episodic stuff about an assassin who never shows emotions. I liked it, but there is literally zero plot, only the episodic 'missions', usually from the perspective of the people who encounter him.

The ones I really can't recommend are Hakugei Densetsu (horribly cheesy and silly and boring), Souryuuden (very average and doesn't adapt the full story of the novels), Sword for Truth (just a trashy OVA) and Ultraviolet: Code 044 (it's basically like the movie, an okay action flick but nothing really interesting). All his other OVAs and Movies have been pretty decent at least, although not close to the level of his TV Series, especially in the 70s (when he was at his best in my opinion). But he did some Lupin Movies, a Rumiko Takahashi OVA and a few Tezuka crossover Movies so if any of these are of interest it's worth checking them out.

Myself I still have ace wa nerae (I don't want to watch it since the remake and sequel aren't subbed), Yuuki no Joou (adaption of some of andersen's fairy tales, looks pretty promising) and Genji Monogatari (some kind of historical harem) to watch.
It’s time to ditch the text file.
