Air Gear

Air Trecks, also known as AT, are motorized and futuristic inline skates that are the new craze taking the nation by storm. Although each AT comes with a speed limiter, a community of daredevils known as the "Storm Riders" are brave enough to tamper with the device. Utilizing AT's in underground battles, individual teams wager valuable AT parts or team emblems—their symbol of pride—to dominate the streets.

Living in this era is Itsuki Minami, a middle school student notorious for engaging in street fights. Always wanting to reach heights no one else is able to, the reckless punk will break through any obstacle that stands in his way, alongside his best friends Kazuma Mikura and Onigiri. However, it is when he discovers a pair of Air Trecks in his house that the path to his true desire finally opens: to rule the skies.

Air gear is one of my all time favorite anime's down to the music the theme the premise (a bunch of gang members fighting over turfs for bragging rights and better equipment to soar the sky and skate) I even love the characters they all feel so free spirited and it's one of the very first anime's I've ever seen I love it all,

the only thing I don't like about this anime is the weird sexual themes or borderline incestuous behaviors but aside from that,

You get to see a group of rebellious free spirited teens in a punk inspired jetset radio like anime and what's ... greater than that? 😁

Mixed Feelings

Any positive reviews of Air Gear are mostly filled by nostalgia from those who watched it in the early 2000s. The art style, fashion, and music are all great (art and fashion in the manga are even cooler seriously look up the manga covers) which are what drew me into watching. It has all the making of a classic 2000s anime like protag male living with hot sisterly female characters and over the top ecchi scenes which have not aged well in 2022.

The first few episodes are interesting, but the plot never really goes anywhere? The premise of roller skating gangs sounds super ... cool, but it is really bland. They throw some drama in the last few episodes along with some weird fantasy aspects that do not fit in at all. This should have been a 12 episode anime. I had to push to finish it but the end left me confused by the total shift from the beginning. Personally, I do not recommend it.

In the beginning, I actually thought this might be a W show.
The idea? Cool.
Rollerblades with powers, sky-high battles, gangs, freedom—it sounded like the start of something fresh and exciting.

But instead, what we got was a sloppy, brain-dead mess pretending to be deep while delivering zero logic and max cringe.

No Sense, No Logic, Just Trash
...
The show is supposed to be about “Air Gears” and how riders evolve their powers, right?

Well guess what?

Ikki never evolves. Not even a little.
From the very first episode till the last, he’s doing the same cheap tricks, pulling off dumb stunts, using pranks to win fights, and never once leveling up in a satisfying way.

Power progression?
Absolutely dead.

“1v1” – More Like 3v1 with Plot Armor

Let’s talk about that infamous fight.
A supposed one-on-one battle, but surprise!
A third person interferes, chaos happens, and suddenly... Ikki wins.

What the actual hell?

No rules, no consequences—just pure plot armor in full force.
We never got to see a real, fair, intense fight in the entire show. Just loud music, flashy animation, and a whole lot of nothing.

Female Characters Are Just... There

Can we talk about how annoying the female characters are?

They’re written like background props. No real goals, no strong moments, no impact.
Just there to either scream, flirt with Ikki, or flash some fanservice.

It’s honestly painful how lazy the writing gets.
They deserved better… but so did we.

🛹 From Potential to a Full-On Disaster

“Air Gear” had the chance to be something special, but it threw everything away for style over substance.

The plot? Confused.

The MC? Brain-dead.

The battles? Rigged.

The pacing? A disaster.

The ending? Don’t even get me started.



Final Thoughts – Ending Was the Cherry on Top

I was gonna give this 5/10, just because the concept was cool and the visuals had some effort.
But that ending? That senseless, dumb, lazy ending?

Dropped it straight to a 4/10.
