Synopsis

The story is set in the future on the planet named Amoi which is controlled by a supercomputer named Jupiter. Among the mostly male human population, the light-haired elite class is allowed to temporarily keep the dark-haired "mongrels" as pets. One elite member, Iason, encounters a mongrel named Riki in the slums and decides to take him in. However, Iason keeps Riki longer than it is socially approved, and rumors abound about their possible relationship.

Ai no Kusabi (2012) is the newest adaptation of a light novel of the same name published in 1986-1987. It’s first adaptation was airing in 1992-1994 and it had 2 OVA’s. This adaptation consisted of 4 OVA’s so double the fun, right? Well, yes and no, unless you call unfinished work fun. In that case it’s yes and yes.

Story: 9/10
It’s set in a fictional world with mostly men because of some genetic issues. The society is divided into castes where elites are at the top and mongrels at the bottom. The story revolves around an elite and a mongrel but don’t get the wrong idea, read more

Don't waste your time on this remake unless you just want to see a glossier version of the story. Other than that you will get NOTHING from this story. No character develop, no story development, no coherent story, nothing about how Iason and Riki truly feel. Heck you won't even get an ending!! Why didn't they just remaster the original OVAs and call it a day? Now apart of me don't want to blame the production company completely, as they planned to have a full series with 12 episodes but they obviously only had enough to make four and just stopped it right after the read more

Mirage of Blaze is a unique anime that is similar to AnK but at the same time rather dynamically different. If you enjoy BL anime where the two main characters are constantly ‘clashing’ against each other and thus creating a sort of love/hate relationship with a huge dose of drama then give Mirage of Blaze a try. The relationship development in MoB is far more subtle than in AnK so take heed if you are not a fan of historical dramas and lack the patience to endure through a slow paced story. However MoB is worth watching, if you are unsure whether you will like it give it a try first.
Yami no Matsuei, Ai no Kusabi, and Mirage of Blaze makes up the three classic triads of this type of BL anime. To start off Yami no Matsuei is similar to AnK in that the main antagonist is very similar to Iason in both possessiveness and obsession over their ‘love’ interest, but at the same time both have ‘to die for’ looks that makes it impossible for you to hate them. Both these anime unfolds into a complicated plot that keeps you absorbed by the conflict – which usually involves some kind of drama between said main characters – and the story arc ending will leave you in a pretty satisfied condition. If you are a fan of AnK watching Yami no Matsuei is a must.
