SynopsisIn a distant, highly technological future, Tylor, the title character, is a mysterious young man without a real purpose in life, a state of mind that is very hard to determine, and a knack for accidentally getting out of near-death situations with a childishly cavalier attitude. He sometimes does not even seem to realize when he is in danger, which is actually an asset to him on many occasions.
Tylor stumbles his way into the space navy, and soon gains command of a destroyer, to the astonishment of his lieutenant, Yamamoto. It turns out, much to Yamamoto's dismay, that this ship is considered the dumping grounds of the military, and contains all the sorts of characters that should probably not even be let near a paintball gun, let alone a spaceship. However, thanks to Tylor's eccentric leadership, these misfits eventually become the collective saviors of humanity. [Source: Wikipedia] |

I didn't expect to like this series so much. The animation is average and of an older anime era, and military/sci-fi anime is always a hit or miss with me. But you can't NOT love Captain Tylor. As the title says, he's irresponsible... on of my favorite anime music videos has hime singing "Reponsibility, what's that?" But he's also a very happy, easy going or care free individual who thinks life should just be fun. Though he makes enemies within his own fleet due to his idiotic luck, he manages to win the respect and eventually friendship of many of their foes (I'd say he could sweet-talk himself out of any assassination attempt). Somehow this misfit crew becomes the most notable in the war.
In the same regards as Luffy, you can sympathize with the crew with who they have as a captain... you have to scoff and laugh that anyone like Tylor managed to become captain. And yet through unimaginable luck, gets out of every mishap still smiling. This series is just plain fun to watch. My dad and everyone in my anime club are always happy to sit down and re-watch episodes. The ending was also a great climax and conclusion (especially for a series largely bent on comedy or entertainment). I would recommend the series to anyone. I also don't mind watching the dub for this series which is rare for me. read more

One of the most popular archetypes of pop-culture is that of the accidental genius: the guy who achieves outstanding success with little visible effort or awareness. The most popular example of this as of late is that of Captain Jack Sparrow from the Pirates films, but it goes back all the way to such classic fables like "The Brave Little Tailor". Again, the accidental genius finds itself in Irresponsible Captain Taylor, and it's just as effective and entertaining.
Justy can't be bothered to look up his middle name Tylor is in many respects the idealic hero. While caring and compassionate, he remains firm in his persuits and rarely suffers any of the moral conflict that plague other protagonists. Whatever emotional issues the rest of the sizable cast might suffer, Tylor stays Tylor through it all, and that alone earns this series major points in my book.
The plotline is farely simple, which is actually something of a disappointment considering this type of story really lends itself to plot intricities (see "Cerebus" graphic novels for an excellent example of such). Still, it remains accessable and entertaining for all viewers. The art isn't anything special, but by no means bad; simply put, it accomplishes what a series that isn't aesthetically focused requires. The music is pretty good, what of it there is.
That pretty much covers all the bases. Really, when a show is this good, it's hard to describe it technically. All I can do is recommend it to anyone who loves a good story (with a great character) and hope you'll take my word for it. read more

They are both space operas with a twist of comedy. Both shows have quirky characters and deals with going to war with an alien race. They are kind of like the rebels in space.
Space opera + comedy = these 2 series.
I know that Nadesico has its own brand of zaniness and humor but it is almost the same with Tylor since both heroes (Tylor and Akito) are clueless when it comes to feelings although Tylor excels in being an idiot or savior anytime. The crew of both flagships (Soyokaze and Nadesico) have their own share of oddballs who chew on hapless officers anytime.
So if you liked space operas with a dash of romance and a generous helping of offbeat humor and drama, these 2 series are for you. ^__^
Martian Successor Nadesico starred a ragtag space crew as they traversed the stars and battled a race of aliens called the Jovians who, in the end, might not be such bad guys after all. Irresponsible Captain Tylor has a similar premise, as the eponymous Captain Tylor and his crew battle the Ralgon Empire, who were also sympathetic antagonists. More similar though is the wacky, comedic tone both shows take. Both Nadesico and Tylor will please fans of comedy anime.

Leadership is a very difficult thing. Someone says you can’t learn it but only gain from God. For Luffy and Tylor it's absolutely true. Main screen time they acting like fools without realizing what’s really going on, but when time comes they somehow managing to turn everything for their own benefit. Two desperate heaven-born captains definitely put these series together.
If One Piece’s length and Captain Tylor’s release date doesn’t scary you go ahead and watch them. You won’t be disappointed because a great comedy is a one more reason to unite these series.
