Synopsis

Tooru Kirishima's notoriety is spread far and wide in the underworld. He is most commonly known as "The Demon of Sakuragi"—a man who is not afraid to resort to violence if deemed necessary. After almost jeopardizing a peace treaty, his boss tasks him with the most difficult job he has ever had: taking care of seven-year-old Yaeka Sakuragi—the boss' precious daughter—so that Tooru understands what it means to be responsible for another life.

At first, the two do not seem to meet eye to eye, as Tooru has no clue on how to communicate with Yaeka, and the young girl is not used to expressing her emotions. However, as time goes on, they come to understand each other despite their differences. The fearsome right-hand man of a yakuza boss and the child he must protect are about to learn that family is not always bound by blood.

A slice-of-life with a twist.

"Kumichou Musume to Sewagakari" blends the everyday of taking care of a 7-year-old with the excitement of being in a Yakuza family. For the most part, I think it does a great job of establishing characters and showing their growth over the course of the 12 episodes. There is an overall familty-centric vibe to the whole thing as the darker yakuza half of the premise often is only present in short increments.

This uses the trope of "scary mean character is actually a sweetheart" fairly well. The daughter, Yaeka-chan, is well written and (in my opinion) avoids many of the ...

Mixed Feelings
I wanted to like this series a lot more than I actually did. I am a sucker for stories about dads taking care of cute little kids, and this show did give me enough of that that I still felt mildly positive about it in the end, but this is a case of wasted potential more than anything else.

The central problem here is a lack of conflict, which is a surprise given the premise. Instead of a fish out of water comedy about a thug that's wholly unsuited to take care of a child, Kirishima (the main character) easily adapts, and he and Yaeka (the ...

It pains me to say it but Kumichou Musume to Sewagakari is the prime example of the 'mid show'.

The concept of found family in the yakuza environment itself is actually a great setup that can end up with a fantastic action-packed comedy. Yet, in this show, the whole part of gang life is only treated as an explanation for why Kirishima used to be a violent and cruel person and the jokes are often unfunny or even cringe.

When I read the description of this show for the first time, I hoped it would be another entertaining thing to watch, similar to Hinamatsuri but what we ...
