It pains me to say it but Kumichou Musume to Sewagakari is the prime example of the 'mid show'.

The concept of found family in the yakuza environment itself is actually a great setup that can end up with a fantastic action-packed comedy. Yet, in this show, the whole part of gang life is only treated as an explanation for why Kirishima used to be a violent and cruel person and the jokes are often unfunny or even cringe.

When I read the description of this show for the first time, I hoped it would be another entertaining thing to watch, similar to Hinamatsuri but what we got instead was a dish without any flavor. It tried to be funny, it tried to be sad, it tried to give some mystery and some action. And it failed. It failed with everything.

For sure there was potential within this story but nothing was able to bring it out. The sad scenes weren't sad enough. The funny moments weren't funny enough. The most dramatic moment in the entire show ended as quickly as it started. So no matter how much I wanted to like this show, it constantly kept reminding me how mediocre it is. Especially the episode with the concept of "it was all just a dream" destroyed any hope that I had left for it.

The relationship between Kirishima and Yaeka didn't feel special at all as the person who she was lacking wasn't a father but a mother so the whole concept of their bonding felt weak from the very beginning and I believe that this part of the story was supposed to be the strongest point.

There are so many amazing stories with the 'found family' trope so do yourself a favor, skip this series, go watch Spy x Family and if you want to feel more like a hipster, go watch Hinamatsuri. You will definitely have way more fun with those two shows than with this bland story.
