Interest Stacks

Animeby Gravity

Finding an anime that you can watch with your family can prove to be a daunting challenge, for newcomers and veterans alike. Even wholesome anime sometimes has that one awkward surprise shower scene, and plenty of action-packed shounen have a fight scene that goes over the top in gore.

Some parents aren’t going to be interested in the more ‘family friendly’ anime however, and instead would want something with deeper or more adult themes. It may also be difficult to convince parents to watch a particularly long anime due the large time commitment, and if they are unused to foreign content, a dub in their native language may be a must.

This stack contains a variety of anime series and movies that may be suitable to watch with your family; some are pure wholesome fun while others have more adult oriented themes. Two of the main focuses of this list was to avoid awkward ecchi scenes, and to be mindful of any references to Japanese culture or popular anime troupes that aren’t inherently explained in the anime. Either of these could leave a parent feeling confused and/or uncomfortable and could put them off of anime for good.
Only you know your parents! Please use discretion while choosing from this list! I hope you enjoy~

(Feedback is appreciated! If you feel like something is missing from this list, please let me know! Thank you~ :3)

All of these anime are tearjerks in their own merit, you might not cry at all of them, but all of these have a high potential to.

Your name / weathering with you isn't on here since I haven't watched them.

Approachable shows that require no prior knowledge of anime to appreciate. Determined by lack of tropes, lack of fanservice, resemblance to western media, and short length

Listing all Netflix originals was far easier as some of them are ONAs, as well as the platform itself tells you what are their licenses with their logo on the series cover. However, no Pokemon Journeys or the CGI Mewtwo movie, as they aren't exclusive to them even if marked as if they were. My intent in creating this list is to have a place where you can see the content of the streaming platforms (Just Amazon and Netflix because other platforms have a plethora of content) and because the 'Licensors' profile in MAL doesn't include all shows mentioned. If I miss something that isn't in any of the 'Interest Stacks' please let me know!

Slice of Life can be divide into two kinds, the fun one and the deep one. And this is my collection for truly slice of life drama animes. It represents the epitome of human nature and feelings. These animes might be inspirational ones that might hit you like a bullet to the heart.

We all know that Kyoto Animation has been important to us, wider audience. But unfortunately, a tragedy struck in the studio and caused many casualties and unintentional deaths of innocent lives. Kyoto Animation is known for its animation quality and comfortable story writing. Some of their works were various; comedy, romance, drama, action, and slice of life. Now, this is my collection of KyoAni's best works that touched many hearts.

Every animated media that has been made, in some way has the idea to tell a story, and to express a feeling onto the watcher. But then, there are some series which has a particular way to evocate it's emotions, and they use different tools to do that. Thought provoking writing, displaying the characters' internal monologues, their struggles and fears, using very particular cinematographic angles, and using contrasting styles of animation, colouring and highly symbolical and metaphorical imagery - these are some of the few hallmarks that the said animation is having psychological themes, and that it is avant-garde in it's approach. This is not limited to any genre, as well.

I do realize that animation like this may not be for everyone, but I do firmly believe in it's artistic merits and integrity. Media like this allows us to peek into the human psyche and probably our own too, and it does provides us with often interesting viewpoints of our world, even if fractured through the prism of the animated fiction. Shows like that also likes to ask us questions without answers, to give us moral dilemmas without solid conclusion, or to put it short, to make us think.

The shows that were picked follows a pattern, the ones which are more straightforward, less abstract and easier to get into will be first, while the list goes down, the more complex and obscure the works will get.

Most adaptations are, at best, on par with the original. Some aspects are better, some worse, so it's down to preference as to how to enjoy a story. There are, of course, many, *many* outright stinkers that make one think the original was far worse than it actually was. But sometimes there comes an adaptation made with such outstanding effort, it elevates the source material onto a completely new level of experience: either through masterful editing or reimagining of the original narrative, or visionary direction, or incredible sound design, or career-topping performance from animators and/or voice actors.

This list covers anime adaptations that I consider far and away superior to their printed source materials. To the point where there isn't any need at all to read the original as long as the adaptation exists because everything is just better in the latter.

Do note that I don't necessarily consider all of these shows great per se; the only condition for them to be here is to be much superior to the original work across the board. A notable example of a horribad manga somewhat saved by outstanding adaptation effort is Erased. Similarly, while Devilman: Crybaby is contentious by itself, almost all of its faults lie with Go Nagai's original, and Masaaki Yuasa's version still manages to mitigate many of them.

Also note that I'm omitting sequels, subsequent seasons, etc., to avoid clutter, and in MOST (but not all!) cases they would also apply. Notable exceptions exist, e.g. One-Punch Man season 2. In all other cases I'll either use the first installment in the series or the one I consider the best-made (for example, if it's a movie with greater production values than the rest of the series).

More entries will be added in the future. Existing entries are subject to revision.

This list constitutes my personal views and stances. If something isn't on it, it likely means I haven't watched it or am not familiar enough with the original to have a qualified opinion. Feel free to shoot me suggestions via DMs, but make sure you have a convincing argument if it's not something that's already on my main manga/anime list. I don't promise it'll end up here, but I will consider all suggestions.

Let's face it, we all have that one friend who has a prejudice against anime.

"Only kids watch anime"

"Anime aren't those smut movies on adult platforms are they?"

etc...

Feel free to show exactly that kind of friend this list and maybe you will have a new "nakama" in some weeks :-)

Hold on, I know. Some people will never get the wonderful taste of anime and this is perfectly fine. Yeah well, everyone has their own personal preference, but you should have tried it at least once.

! This stack contains series & movies for every age group and gender, so please read through the short synopsis of your choice so you don't throw in the towel after the first episode !

I hope you have fun diving into the world of anime :-)

(Feedback & suggestions for improvement are very welcome).
