Mirai Shounen Conan

Conan was the only child born on Remnant Island, a place settled by a group of refugees while they fled a terrifying wave of magnetic bombs that wiped out most of humanity. After 20 years, most of the castaways have died, save for Conan and the wise old man that raised him.

Believing Remnant Island to be the last inhabited place on Earth, Conan is shocked when he discovers a young girl named Lana washed up on the beach one day. Though he is thrilled to learn that humanity has survived, Lana tells him the nation of Industria wants her as a hostage to force her grandfather, Dr. Lao, to power their machinery. Their conversation is cut short when Industria's top pilot, Monsley, suddenly appears and seizes Lana. Determined to save her, Conan immediately sets off from Remnant Island and begins a journey that will ultimately determine the fate of the world.

It's a classic that has absolutely earned its place in history. The animation was consistently great, showcasing the kind of whimsy that Ghibli would become known for many years earlier. Some of my favorite movement in anime I've seen in a long time, lot of creativity.

The assortment of characters were all vivid and memorable. Conan himself is just such a force from start to finish, running around with the energy of a young Goku. It's great that he's balanced well by both Jimsey, who can match his energy and strength but becomes more friend than rival over time, and Lana, who serves at first as ... a princess needing to be saved but complements him so well as one of the few moderating influences on Conan through the plot as well as the one who most fervently believes in him. She may be a normal human, but she truly does save him.

Then there's the side cast and, oh boy, there's just so much to love here. Dyce is the obvious standout, a morally gray character with real heart and an honest streak to him who is, nonetheless, largely out for himself for much of the plot. The man shines as both comic relief and a major source of tension throughout. From there, the list just balloons: Garu, the High Harbor fisherman bombardier with the best guerilla tactics; Monsley, the military commander from Industria who kicks off much of the tension of the plot and grows with the series into one of my favorites; Orlo, the brash High Harbor tough who is always seeking a way to secure himself more power; Dr. Lao, Lana's grandfather than the major aim for much of the series; Lepka, a major figure in Industria with a massive desire for power. Getting character writing this good for a handful of characters is already great, but this series excelled at it, often taking character tropes and flipping them on their heads as it went on.

Narratively, this isn't exactly breaking the mold, but you can see glimmers of many of Miyazaki's future films in here (and not just in the designs of the giant airships straight out of Nausicaa). Self-destruction wrought by humanity's super weapons, corrupting influences and the pursuit of power, environmental degradation and rebirth, there's a lot to dig into. It's not always explored in depth and it has a tendency to be pretty blunt (good vs. bad is often apparent), but the series constantly gives its narrative villains opportunities to do better and some of them even decide to change their ways. It's a sweet story about leaving a world of war behind and founding something new and beautiful in the ashes, and by the end, you truly believe they can make it.

I will not spoil anything in this review I want you to be able to enjoy it free of spoilers like I did.

This is a masterpiece. Its timeless. It's very uncommon to find a show that is enjoyable for all ages who watch it. Those of you who have seen studio ghibli films. This is basically a Ghibli film but in a 20+ episode series. As such it has everything you'd expect; action, adventure, beautiful art & worldbuilding, great music & characters, moments that make you laugh, ... get you hype and those classic emotional moments.

Just try it out if you look at other peoples reviews even the most critical people find enjoyment with this series, so try it out

Mixed Feelings

Mirai Shounen Conan, an anime classic that I had high expectations for, and how could I not, especially seeing that all the reviews on MAL are good, that's why I'm here to burst the bubble.

Let's start with the characters, specifically Conan, a textbook Gary Stu, with ridiculous strength, speed and agility, as well as a blatant plot armor (except if it's spanking, you will understand when you watch it), as well as being a siiiimp because of the useless Lana, the perfect damsel in distress, and of course Jimsy, the only one I can't criticize, in fact he has an interesting character development.

The villains are ... the worst, a nation of very bad and very stupid bad guys, led by the great villain, with an evil laugh and the most cliché and flat motivation in history.

Then there's and the message, which is basically "nature is good, war is bad" but put in such an obvious and superficial way, a mediocre environmental pamphlet.

Even the action is questionable, it's funny at the beginning but it becomes repetitive.

And even with all that said, I can't hate this anime, I don't love it either, but it still has its charm, the drawing and animation quality is excellent for its time, and the designs are Ghibli (before Ghibli) everywhere you look.

Conan despite all is cute and overflows with charisma, even Lana has a couple of redeeming moments, although for me she is still the worst of the protagonists.

And while most of the action is repetitive, there are some that stand out for good, especially the final battle, which was exciting and fun at the same time.
Even the cliché environmentalist message doesn't bother me that much, I guess I forgive it because of how old it is.

All in all it's not a marvel, but being the classic that it is I think it's still worth watching, just don't go in with too high expectations, or you might end up disappointed.
