Hayao Miyazaki is a Japanese animator, filmmaker, and manga artist. A founder of Studio Ghibli, he has attained international acclaim as a masterful storyteller and creator of Japanese animated feature films, and is widely regarded as one of the most accomplished filmmakers in the history of animation.
In his early years, Miyazaki worked at several studios and directed TV series such as Lupin the 3rd Part I (1971), Future Boy Conan (1978), 2 episodes of Lupin the 3rd Part II (1977), Sherlock Hound (1984) and his first feature film The Castle of Cagliostro (1979). Later, he began writing and illustrating the manga Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (1982–1994) and directed the 1984 film adaptation produced by Topcraft. Miyazaki also collaborated with his colleague Isao Takahata for several years.
Miyazaki co-founded Studio Ghibli in 1985. He directed numerous films with Ghibli, including Laputa: Castle in the Sky (1986), My Neighbor Totoro (1988), Kiki's Delivery Service (1989), and Porco Rosso (1992), Princess Mononoke (1997), Spirited Away (2001), Howl's Moving Castle (2004), Ponyo (2008), and The Wind Rises (2013). Following the release of The Wind Rises, Miyazaki announced his retirement from feature films, though he later returned to write and direct his twelfth feature film The Boy and the Heron (2023). Miyazaki has won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature Film twice, for "Spirited Away" (2001) and "The Boy and the Heron" (2023).

The TV series was initially directed by Masaaki Ōsumi, who was then replaced by Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata. It was the first TV anime adaptation of the Lupin III manga series created by Monkey Punch. The anime was canceled after 23 of its planned 26 episodes due to declining ratings. Takahata and Miyazaki directed episodes 7-8, 10-11, 13-23 of the series.

The pilot special is based upon a popular shoujo manga (girls' comic) by Tetsuya Chiba, originally serialized in 1963. It is notable as Miyazaki's first solo directorial effort; although he teamed up with Takahata for the later episodes of Lupin the 3rd Part I (1971) TV series, but Yuki's Sun marked his first time solely in the captain's seat.

The TV series is based on the character Sherlock Holmes by Arthur Conan Doyle, almost all the characters are depicted as anthropomorphic dogs. Hayao Miyazaki worked on six episodes in 1982, but due to production delays he left the project and the rest of the series was directed by Kyōsuke Mikuriya. Miyazaki directed episodes 3-5 and 9-10 of the series.
