Synopsis

Shiki Ryougi, Mikiya Kokutou, and Touko Aozaki begin investigating a bomber after they witness a nearby explosion. That same night, Shiki catches a glimpse of the bomber, and as a result, he becomes fixated on her. To get rid of her, the madman plays a game of cat and mouse in attempts to lure her to an empty parking garage. And bombs are not the only thing he has in his arsenal: he also possesses the ability to see the future, and he intends to bring an end to Shiki.

Elsewhere a few days prior, a student at Reien Girls' Academy, Shizune Seo, plans to head home for the summer. However, while exiting a bus, she has a vision of the future involving a nearby stranger's death. While trying to warn the stranger, she meets Mikiya—who succeeds in utilizing Shizune's information effectively.

Subsequently, an employee is sent on a job with his employer's 10-year-old daughter in tow. However, the subject of his investigation turns out to be a ghost from both of their pasts.

Mirai Fukuin tells the stories set during the main timeline of the Kara no Kyoukai films, as well as one set in the future.

This feels like the end of an era. So far, every film festival week I've done has featured the Kara no Kyoukai franchise. But this is the last of the films, not including the 3D remake of the first film. I'm not going to review that one because 3D is a cheap gimmick and the first film was awful. So, unless they fixed all of the plot problems it's really not worth bothering with it. That being said, let's look at the eighth and final film in the franchise to see how it holds up.

Story:

We open with Shiki stalking through a parking garage, chasing ... a bomber. It quickly cuts to a young lady who can see the future. She just so happens to encounter Mikiya and enlists his help in stopping a man from getting into an accident that will kill him. The story from there basically follows two main narrative paths, both about people with precognitive abilities.

The biggest flaw with the film is simply when it's set. The bulk of it clearly takes place before the seventh film, which really weakens the tension since we know how things are going to basically play out. Aside from that, Mikiya's scenes aren't that interesting. He just spends the bulk of his time talking with the young lady.

That being said, Shiki's part of the story still manages to be compelling, in spite of you knowing how it's going to end. The way they establish the different types of precognition is also quite interesting, albeit the execution could have been better. The action is quite strongly done as well.

Characters:

The cast varies a bit. The established characters, Shiki, Mikiya & Touko have a strong sense of personality. The main antagonist, Mitsuru, is kind of interesting, but could have been developed better. Shizune isn't very interesting. They also add in young Mana. She's the same type of character as Chibi-Usa from Sailor Moon except with not as much going for her.

Art:

I have to give Ufotable full credit here. The artwork and animation are both strongly done with detailed backgrounds and some tense action sequences. Mirai Fukuin is easily on par with the best of the films in that department.

Sound:

This is another aspect where I have to give them credit. There are a lot of really good actors in this. Suzumura Kenichi, Sakamoto Maaya & Honda Takako make their triumphant returns. Ishida Akira makes his appearance as the antagonist and he's quite brilliant at it. That being said, the people who are playing less interesting characters don't give their best performances. To be fair, both Kanemoto Hisako & Iguchi Yuka are good actresses. This is just a case where the characters they're playing don't demand much from them. The music is nicely done. I can't fault Kajiura Yuki's work on that.

Ho-yay:

There really isn't any in this film.

Final Thoughts:

Kara no Kyoukai: Mirai Fukuin has some aspects that do weaken it. That being said, it's a really solid film overall and there's plenty in it that works really nicely. It isn't the best in the franchise, but it's worth watching. My final rating is going to be a solid 7/10. If you like the franchise just fine, consider checking it out. Tomorrow I'll continue this year's film festival week with Advent Children.

This is the last and concluding film of the Kara no Kyoukai franchise. Kara no Kyoukai holds a special place in my heart, in that it doesn’t conform into many conventional anime tropes that we are all familiar with; it is not afraid to being radical in its of direction of filming and storytelling. I find this particularly admirable in an age when a significant number of anime released every year is based on plain-adaptations that are restricted by their faithfulness to the original material. Kara no Kyoukai is unique amongst the crowd in that most of the films in the series are not interested ... in telling a story so much as plunging into philosophical discussions of human’s perception of their world, plot only used to further drive such discussions. The 8th film of Kara no Kyoukai: Future Gospel, follows a similar trend, and this time it deals with human’s perception of future and its ambiguous and ever-changing form.

Future Gospel starts off in a time preceding all previous events in the series except of the second and fourth film, and it introduces us to two new characters who are capable of some form of future prediction. Mitsuru Kamekura, is a teenage occupational explosive planter who uses his ability to manipulate the future to bomb public settings for terroristic purpose. To Mitsuru, the future that he manipulates is nothing more than a form of crudely-made reality that cannot be avoided. That being said, though, he goes into obsessive length to convert every miniscule detail he envisions in his future into reality, as evident in the letter of responsibility he leaves in the crime scene, in which he details the time, aftermath and even the number of casualties and the degree of their injury to pinpointing accuracy. The other character, Shizune is an innocent, teenage girl who sees spontaneous flashes of future events that may range from answers to tests, activities with her friends, and the demise of the people around her. Like Mitsuru, Shizune has come to accept her future as unchangeable, but unlike Mitsuru, Shizune is incapable of altering the future, which also generates an element of fear and powerlessness in Shizune’s life (more on that later).

Apart from their supernatural abilities, there is no personal or physical connection between these two characters. Future Gospel designed these characters for the purpose of exploring the effect their supernatural abilities have on their life, and to accomplish this, the film used the main casts, Shiki and Mikiya, as the characters who will ultimately drive the children forward in their life. We then come to learn that both of them are at a point in their life where their individualities and skills can grow but stunted by the invisible restrictions placed upon them by their knowledge of future.

In the case of Shizune, she forsook a lot of her life's happiness because she was constantly afraid that something bad will happen to her. There was that one scene when she encountered a dog on her way to the bus stop, but at the last second she stopped herself from getting too attached to the dog because she used to own a dog that died after she predicted its death. That one scene basically sums up her life: not being able to do what she wants to do because of fear of failure and death. Mitsuru was not better off because he already accepted his fate as being sealed by the futures he predicted. As a result he grew up to be an emotionless kid who didn’t seem to care about many things. Shiki kicking his ass was probably the best thing that ever happened to him. After the time skip the movie showed him as a sympathetic human being, a marked improvement over his former terrorist self.

In terms of Future Gospel’s animation, it is business as usual for ufotable. The amount of effort that went into depicting the miniscule information of the background is really out of this world. Examples off the top of my head are Touko’s messy and gloomy looking office and the abandoned and aged alleyway where Mifune’s Mother conducts her business. The movements of the characters are generally smooth, except of the few times when the characters make hand movements, in which case they look slow and unnecessary. Another minus is the use of CG for cars. Future Gospel only has one fight scene, and in comparison to all of the fight scenes in the franchise, it is not extravagant or mundane.

I have been a fan of Yuki Kaijura’s music ever since when I first watched Kara no Kyoukai, and this episode does not disappoint. I especially loved Shizune’s theme, which were modified into numerous versions in Future Gospel to perfectly match the tone of the setting and give us the feel that Shizune is a girl in blossom despite her unoptimistic view on life. If I am to summarize the music of Future Gospel, these are the ideal background music for when things are not too boisterous. Again, the fighting theme is not fancy or lacking, but it does its job well. It is reminiscent of some of the tune used in Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle, another title helmed by Yuki Kajiura.

In summary, Future Gospel tells a mature and endearing tale of how two teenagers overcame the constriction their future placed upon them through realizing that living the present is a worthwhile and rewarding way of life. I watched this show back when I was in a situation similar to what Shizune and Mitsuru encountered, so I guess that is why I decided to write so much on this film. In a sense, this last film felt like a parting gift from Nasu Kinoko. Upon concluding the main stories of Garden of Sinner with Book #7, he probably felt that it was necessary to remind the readers that life is not so full of darkness, and god bless him for reminding us that after all the blood, death, and psychological trauma we witnessed in all of his previous installments of Garden of Sinners. It is a very easy watch other than the fact that the order of events happening in this film is not chronological, but things are presented to you in logical way as if it is trying to explain the message it is trying to get across. Watch this if you are ever feeling depressed from all the burdens society has placed on you, it will encourage you a lot.

Disclaimer: This review is not coming from a huge KnK fan. I do not dislike the series and thus far every movie had at least one unique and interesting thing to offer. This one however is easily the worst and I am honestly baffled that it has such a high score.

Characters: Well the usual suspects, Shiki, Mikiya and Touko are their usual selfes and do not get significantly challenged or developed, as to be expected of a side-story that is not needed to understand the main plot. The movie introduces quite a few new characters with two female ones feeling painfully bland and tropey, with ... one loli in particular just coming off as a ripoff of loli Rin Tohsaka (from the Fate franchise), which is especially disappointing, because of the position she has in the story. (to say more would be spoilery) The loli zettai ryoiki also clashes hard with the overall tone of KnK. Besides that the characters are basically entirely governed by the themes of this movie so talking about them as characters is barely necessary.

Themes: The themes center around future and past, about precognition, the despair it can bring and the determination that is needed to forge ones own path.
They are very TIRED and BASIC.
Of course somebody who foresaw a terrible event would essentially have to suffer twice.
Of course precognition could lead to a destructive dterministic mindset.
Of course precognition that obviously allows you to alter the future in directions you desire is actually a neat ability to have and so forth.

Honestly I can not imagine that any intelligent person who thought about the subject would be confronted with anything that is new or not obvious here. Prophecy is an element in so many fantasy stories that it would be hard not to gain an understanding of it that far exceeds this movie.

Presentation: In one word: lackluster. Both the direction and animation feel more basic than in other KnK movies, not helped by the fact that the movie is set mostly in normal anime daylight. There is still the occassional cool-looking shot, but thats about it. It is also the first KnK movie in which I did not take note and appreciate the soundtrack. These flaws make other elements common in the series stand out even more as negatives, like the exposition. A fair chunk of the movie is just Mikiya having a exposition scene in a bar, with some girl. It honestly strongly reminded me of Sword Art Online in that regard. The movie is also among the longer ones in the series, which lead to me getting more and more annoyed as it went on.

In comparison say Garan no Dou (the fourth movie) had at the very least as much to say about interesting themes of psychology, while progressing the overall story and with a better presentation, in half the running time, yet it somehow has a worse score.
