I think this is a movie you gotta watch even if you are not into anime. It will boost your empathy by 15% just by watching it. The subject matter and execution are both amazing from any perspective, it deserves it's popularity.
If you got to watch one thing from this list, make it this film.

This is Naoko Yamada's most popular and, imo, her most influential. It combines the cute and fluffy of all girl cast anime with realism and relatableness only topped by other KyoAni shows (again, imo).

I did not finish this show, not because it's bad, the direction is a combination of yamada's emphatic approach to characters and general realism and a bit of weirdness typical of Science Saru shows, but the story is rather slow and tame, sprinkled with moments of magical realism. It's based on real history and the not real parts are very obvious so it's a good watch if you are into that.

I love this one so much I have trouble putting it into words, it has that realism and relatableness typical of Yamada but this one is more on the drama side of thing compared to K-On or Tamako Market. Kumiko is an amazing character (the others are too) and people who were in an school orchestra praise it for how true to life it is. For me this is the anime that *feels* the most real out of everything I watched.

This one is very artsy, not in a way where you are left of extremely confused about everything (like in Angel's Egg for example) since stuff are very obvious and the message and themes are super simple. What makes it special is the way they are presented, intimate and delicate art style, soundtrack and character animations and interactions, fits well with Mizore's (the protagonist) personality. It's like you get to see the world the way she experiences it.

It's a feel good anime made in a optimistic way towards being part of a community and made from the desire to have a community where everyone is accepted and treated as a human being despite their race or nationality. People praise the movie a lot so make sure you watch that after the tv series.
