Short animations getting artsy

May 20 2023, 9:19 PM | Updated May 21, 2023 10:14 PM
Experimental, surreal, abstract, trippy or just artsy.
A mixed bag of genres, most of these pieces are up for interpretation.
Beware, you are getting at non-conventional and weird grounds here.

ONA, 2020, 1 ep Me:- Author:10
By Shingo Tamagawa and unusually high rated for MAL community standards, Puparia seems like a mainstream pop star compared to the rest. Great art quality using more accessible visuals and also great soundtrack, maybe the least "experimental" of the bunch that you are going to see here. I could go on about nature, civilization and modernity anxiety, but I'm not gonna bore you all with shallow interpretations, think for yourself or just appreciate, what really matters in art is how it makes you feel. It doesn't matter what Puparia "means", it's just feels good to watch.

The Collected Animations of ICAF (2001-2006)
OVA, 2006, 16 eps Me:- Author:8
A collection of best works on festivals, as all collections it has its ups and downs but I believe way more ups.
I particularly like Tokyo White and Black by Naohiro Takahashi for its gritty punky urban aesthetics, but this stack in special I really recommend Masaki Buma's Street of Millimeter. But the collection itself is very interesting.

By Jun Aoki, it might as well be an horror story.
Kitsune Tsuki
Movie, 2015, 1 ep Me:- Author:6
Fox Fears is about a boy that talks to his mother after fearing being cursed. I didn't think much of it until I noticed Miyo Sato was actually talking about what it is to be a mother.
Yamasuki, Yamazaki
Music, 2013, 1 ep Me:- Author:8
I think Shishi Yamazaki love doing shorts about happiness.
The House of Greed
Movie, 2012, 1 ep Me:- Author:7
A funny and perhaps a tad black humor short by Iku Ogawa about monster bird-house (perhaps, a Mimic?) giving some trouble.
Movie, 2013, 1 ep Me:- Author:7
An experimental animation by Asami Ike about rabbits and a dolphin, I feel like she was inspired by watching random microscopic life just moving around on a stage clip.

Kujira no Yu

Bath House of Whales

Kujira no Yu
Movie, 2019, 1 ep Me:- Author:7
Bath House of Whales by Mizuki Kiyama, I really don't think I can add anything to the spot-on synopsis.

Music video for Metome's song Paper Moon by Asami Ike using her usual characters and style. Only now that I'm posting it here I noticed it is a music video, I thought this IDM was just the kind of soundtrack that would fit her work anyway.
1001 Nights
Movie, 1999, 1 ep Me:- Author:7
This is at the bottom of the list because by the length this is a featurette and not a short, but it's really a impressive piece with amazing art and music. Psychedelic, surreal, abstract, a very unique experience.
