Welcome to my profile. My favorite demographic-genre pairing is probably shounen/action, commonly known as battle shounen. My main destress/casual genre is romance in any demographic generally w/o Harem. I mostly evaluate shows and comics based on what it is trying to say and how interesting and skillfully said message is communicated. Comedy is really the only thing that doesn't fit into this framework, and as such my calculus for weighing purely comedic shows is more abstract.
I've fought shounen/action as my favorite for many years, but given how competitive it is, the ones that reach the top generally have a lot going for them. I'm generally a pretty optimistic person, and as such I tend to enjoy Shounen's more holistic viewpoint toward the world. For this reason I also like Shoujo manga a lot as well, though my experience with it is comparatively limited. I try not to let my worldview color my opinion of shows and manga too much, but it is worth noting that more negative outlooks possibly have a higher bar to clear. Click at the expense of your own time for the adderall thoughts of a law student and long-time anime, movie, and comic book consumer on how to score: When examining an element of any media, I sort them into five broad categories in my head, the scores between these are representative of a mix: 5 Star - Clears Expectations: See description for 10. 4 Star - Exceeds Expectations: The element under scrutiny is distinguishable as being the top tier comparatively to other well-done executions. Like getting an A in a 300 level Seminar Class. 3 Star - Meets Expectations: The element under scrutiny is well-done and fully enjoyable, no real complaints. Good representation of how to do that element to point to. Like getting an A in any High School or College class. 2 Star - Standard Level: The element under scrutiny is passable. While it could be better it shouldn't necessarily hurt enjoyment, it's just not something to brag about when pitching the media. Generally, the minimum standard for a story to be enjoyed. Like getting an A in PE. 1 Star - Bad: The element doesn't need scrutiny, the act of watching that aspect takes you out of the whole experience. Like failing PE. A 7 element can never bring a score down, a 5 element will only do so if it is so present and on display the other parts become harder to enjoy, a 3 element will basically always bring something down. MAL doesn't do .5 scores, I recently started to. I overlayed what their school grade analog would be (S you should understand from tier lists and games) 10 (S): Masterpiece - The master at what it does. It's core message or theme is so unique and distinct from others that even if another does a similar theme or concept, it still won't take away from that work. 9.5 (S-): Imperfect Masterpiece - Although the theme itself may feel like a 10, there is a noticeable flaw somewhere else in the work, that actively takes away from the enjoyment of the aspect that makes it a 10. 9 (A++ or 100%): Outstanding - Although arguably harder to get a 9 than a 9.5, a 9 is something where most or nearly every aspect of the movie reaches a distinguished level 8.5 (A+): Amazing - Has multiple articulable aspects that exceed the Well-Done show. 8 (A): Excellent - Has at least one aspect that is distinguishable from the Well-Done show. 7.5 (A-): Great - No real complaints with anything that was done, usually is a first recommendation when it comes to a particular genre as something every fan of the genre should watch 7 (B+): Really Good - No major complaints, nearly all of it was well-done, but a few aspects were either Average or Bad (usually not Bad), a good representation of the genre 6.5 (B): Pretty Good - A few complaints here and there, but most to half is above-average, the complaints are usually overlookable or skippable on rewatch. 6 (B-): Good - There are a handful things that are well-done, but most is generally pretty standard and hard to really refer to as a talking point in favor of it. 5.5 (C+): Decent - There really are only 1-2 well-done things regarding the media, but those things still help you walk away with an enjoyable experience. Ex. even if the plot, themes and villains in the show are generic and boring; a funny, memorable cast is enough to leave you with a good time and decent impression of the show. 5 (C): "Ok" - Much like the last one there are really only 1-2 well-done qualities about it, but the lasting impression is that they definitely do not make up for what parts are just kind of a slog to get through (i.e. when asked for an opinion you say "It's okayyy," (insert legato over 'okay') instead of "Oh. It's ok." 4.5 (C-): Ironic Value or Charming - An otherwise standard media finds new life in its ironic value. It is not intentionally charming or ironic. 4 (D+): Mediocre - If everything in the show is actually, legitimately at a "standard level" with literally nothing sticking out, then it goes here. 3.5 (D-): Not Good - It has some stuff that's just not good, it's bad, but it may have been good if it accomplished what it tried to do 3 (F+): Delicious Garbage - It's bad, but it's because it's bad you can enjoy it. It's lower than the one above because at least the 3.5 tried to be something more. 2.5 (F): Bad - What it aims to do, and what it accomplishes just does not make an enjoyable thing to watch/read. 2 (F + Personal Grudge): Offensive - Something actively makes me morally and emotionally opposed to the media (Human Centipede level) 1: It's really hard for something to even get a 2.5 and a team of people came together to make it, so it'd be pretty hard to be worse than "Bad." My scoring generally focuses on what is good in a show, because other than being an optimist, the frame of mind of asking "what was this show trying to do and how well did it do in accomplishing that?" naturally leads you to highlight the good rather than the bad. Trying to make suggestions about what the creator "should have done instead" presuppose that you know more than the creator about their own vision for their work. It also just makes you sound like a fan that's just a little butthurt that things didn't go exactly how you wanted. Fluid Scores: The mood anyone is in really affects the way they interpret and judge the media they consume, and I think about things obsessively. That combo leads me to fluctuate the scores I put down for these shows, the score that is there are my current feelings on it, but can change with the times. Scores going down: Parts that are lacking generally deduct points when they take away from the parts that make that media great, which can be pretty hard to do. It is not usually the case that some aspect feels like a 9, but the rest of the show is average, if that aspect is important enough, then it usually pervades and helps the other aspects at least up to above average. 10s aren't perfect shows: A 10 by my standards can have aspects that are average (aka 5) and might actually be considered not a 10 in terms of 100%, that score is instead occupied by 9. If something reaches a 10 it doesn't matter what the other aspects of the show are, it has become timeless because of its contribution. If there are enough things that materially affect the enjoyment of that theme, then it becomes a 9.5. My use of scores 3.5 and below: More titles would probably be, but I usually don't stick with a show like that long enough for it to actually show up or bother me enough to rate it lower than 4. Favorites probably are the only section where my full subjective feelings come out, I have arguments, but really the difference between some of these can be pretty minimal. Manga vs. Anime Favorite Manga are my favorite series/things not anime original. With the advent of seasons that break up shows, it makes it incredibly difficult to put my favorite anime in that section (like Kaguya-sama or Naruto Shippuden). Favorite Anime are movies that are (1) an anime original or (2) 聲の形 which is so different from the manga that it justifies distinguishing it. People and Studios are not ordered. Characters are very loosely ordered Only Ranking Series, so no movies. Farther down, I put some series above others despite having a lower score. Since my scoring is pretty much based on averaging, certain series might have more offer that is actually really good, but other parts that drag it down. While I try to keep my score objective, for this list, I give more weight subjectively to certain parts of a series. I counted most sequel series that don't differ in name too significantly, so no Dragon Ball Super or Boruto, but yes for Kimi ni Todoke: Bangai-hen and Magi: Adventures of Sinbad. Someof these series (18) I have not finished/caught up. Additionally, I excluded series in which I've only consumed a single season, I just don't have enough material to fairly consider it. (e.g. Chainsaw Man, Call of the Night, Black Prince and Wolf Girl). The one Bokura wa Minna Kawai-sou, because it is a comedy series, and the season that exists gives enough for me to go off of. 1. 暁のヨナ/Yona of the Dawn 7. スキップビート/Skip Beat 8. ワンピース/One Piece 9.
