I can understand that, it does get pretty edgy with Kaneki about halfway through when his hair whitens. I am an enjoyer of edge and angst if I'm being honest, personally.

Yeah for sure it's similar to Tokyo Ghoul in terms of the main character's situation for sure, not to mention Tokyo Ghoul is heavily inspired by novels in the same way CSM is heavily inspired by film. You didn't mesh with TG though, did you?

Glad you're enjoying it so far! There are tons of memorable, insane moments all over the manga. I'd love to see how Fujimoto comes up with some of these ideas.

What do you think of Chainsaw Man so far? I think you're pretty close to when most people really got hooked on the series.

What's your thought on the final season so far (aot)? xD

I am a fan of good prose. I might actually check out the Monogatari LNs after I'm done with the anime. Are you reading physical or digital? I like reading my books physical, unless it's manga in which case I can tolerate digital.

Hey, been a while! I loved Bake. The dialogue and directing were absolutely mesmerizing, and it was pretty often hilarious as well. Kizu...well, I'm not disliking it, but it definitely lacks the wit, charm, and energy of Bake. Instead, it seems to be going for a simpler, more serious, story driven vibe, which is fine, but not nearly as entertaining as the antics in Bake which were a great mix of being meta, comedic, and serious. First movie was okay, second movie was solid, and I'm looking forward to starting the third movie soon!

What are your thoughts on Monster so far? Definitely one of my most anticipated anime on my ptw.

I wish I liked it more too, although I still enjoyed it! My favorite scenes by far were when Kusanagi chased that one guy earlier on and when she tried to rip the tank apart. She's such a badass!

I appreciated the philosophy that the movie discussed, but at this point I think it's suffering under Seinfeld is Unfunny syndrome: https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/SeinfeldIsUnfunny

I've seen it explored in more interesting ways with more likable and interesting characters before (Ex Machina and Her are my favorite examples of this, highly recommend them to you even if they're not anime), so this movie didn't hit me as hard as it would've if I had seen it back in the day.

Psycho-Pass actually got me to check out GitS! I'm halfway through the movie rn

Pretty fair review! I liked it a bit more than you did (I have it at a 9.5), but I completely understand your criticisms, and this is actually my main gripe with the manga. It focuses too much on cool fantasy imagery and not enough on the meat of the characters and philosophy behind their actions, which is a shame, because when given time to shine those moments are amazing.

I think part of it too is that this is just the prologue to both Guts' and Griffith's story, so if they could answer the question for the reason to their existence they wouldn't have much room to develop further in the story.

While the manga does go downhill a bit, some of the questions raised in the Golden Age arc do get a bit more focus in the following arcs so I def recommend checking out the manga.

btw I just finished Psycho-Pass and it was fucking amazing. I've long been thinking about authoritarianism vs anarchism and the concept of free will and this series explored it beautifully. I can't recommend it enough, especially if you're into well done philosophy in anime.

How're you finding Berserk so far?
SadSceneryBoi Oct 31, 2019 10:17 PM
Elfen Lied is certainly an interesting show. The visuals are often pretty bad and the writing often laughably hamfisted, but it draws really cool parallels with a style of melodrama that was popular in 19th century literature. It also touches on some sensitive thrmes and subjects that you don't see in anime, almost ever. Has a pretty cool premise and some kickass moments too. And of course the use of Lilium is just so...emotionally cathartic. I wouldn't say its a good show and I cant even really disagree with people saying it's a terrible one, but there are certainly aspects of it I like enough to keep me watching.

The worst and most unexpected part is how much it's focused on the SoL element, which it doesn't do a very good job of doing. The atmosphere in those scenes is pretty bland as are the characters. The Nyuu scenes are incredibly distasteful, especially when she's naked.

Either gonna be Eureka Seven or the Tatami Galaxy, not sure yet. I'm loving E7 so far but Tatami Galaxy just seems like a modern classic.

What's your 100th anime gonna be?

Hello there, thank you for your kind words :)

The Kingkiller Chronicles is my favorite series ever in any form of media. Unfortunately, it's been eight years since book 2, and I'm not sure when Rothfuss will finish the third one, though I don't mind waiting for a masterpiece. Fun fact: that is the series that prompted me to write some stuff as well :)

I'm glad you liked NHK! I loved it as well for similar reasons, although not quite as much. The iffy art quality and the drawn out MMO/pyramid scheme arcs brought it down for me. The rest of the show ws amazing though.

Looking forward to DG! I've heard great things.

Vagabond is incredible. It's about the life's journey of the greatest samurai who ever lived, Miyamoto Musashi, from bestial wandering ronin as a teen to a wise and matured samurai. The entire manga is pretty much him travelling to different clans and dojos and challenging the strongest people there to get stronger himself. There's a lot of likable and badass characters who he fights, old masters of the sword who pass on their wisdom to Musashi, and oh man, the art. I am not kidding when I say Vagabond may literally have the best art and paneling I've ever seen. It is so painstakingly beautiful. The fight scenes are rendered with awesome choreography and super detailed panels. My favorite panels though are the ones where someone says something incredibly poignant, and the next page is witjout dialogue, just a stunningly drawn, detailed environments with Musashi soaking in what he just heard. I cannot recommend this manga enough.

Ah I should have clarified. I watched Perfect Blue at home, but I got to catch Millennium Actress in theaters. Hopefully they'll put his other work in theaters too. Hopefully your licensors in the UK start giving anime theatrical releases there!

I see what you mean about Perfect Blue. I think I'll just let it soak in.
