On another note, dropping names like Davis and Coltrane while you're still in your teens- much respect! Sorry, I hate bringing age up, but it's just not common to see someone a little younger with an appreciation for the oldies like that. I was the same way in my teens, but often struggled to find people with similar tastes in that regard haha. So yeah, I really like jazz myself, and I have indeed watched Sakimichi no Apollon as well. Very good show all around, and I especially loved the fact that they played Art Blakey and Bill Evans.. two of my favorites! I had a couple issues with the melodrama surrounding the romance in the series, but overall it was a solid show.
And yes, I do keep in touch with many of them! I actually met my best friend back then, and he and I are legitimately like brothers nowadays haha
But yeah, the way you described that- being able to meet all kinds of musicians from different walks of life, group jam sessions, etc.. that was exactly how that old coffeehouse was. I seriously miss that place, so much that it literally felt like the loss of a friend when it closed its doors. That may sound like a bit of an exaggeration, but I've never encountered a similar spot since then, and I can't even begin to tell you how many people I met over my 4+ years of frequenting that place. If there's anything I ultimately took from it, though, it's a dream to recreate that same kind of haven for artists/musicians someday. ^_^
Haha, to keep it somewhat short, I actually originally started playing music at a local coffeehouse, and it was like a home away from home for a good four years of my life. It sadly shut down back in 2014, but while it was there, it was literally known as an "artists' haven", so to speak. Someday in the future I hope I can be financially well off enough to open my own shop with a similar vibe, focused primarily on live music and promoting local artists of all kinds, rather than making a quick buck. I just want to have my own place that carries on the legacy of our old coffeehouse, where other up-and-coming musicians can have their first chance to play for others. ^_^
