Same here, It's been a while for me to reply.

Well now that you mention it, yes, I think that unpredictable love stories probably are very rare. Or at least I like ones with a good plot or something. Diamond Life and Shinobi Life are good examples of different types of love stories where it's the plot and characters that make it, not things like triangles and harems.

I guess it could be taste in guys that makes the second preferable. I seem to prefer more honest people than the arrogant rich jerks that populate many of them. Yes, I like both Nineteen Twenty- One and Kimi no Todoke a lot.

Ah, I like to track the chapters since I read many ongoings, so there are ones that update every week and others that are only once a month or even longer apart.

I prefered the building more than some of the art in it. lol Certain types of modern art I like and others don't really do anything for me. Those architects have very cool stuff, totally different styles but I like both. Very cool though, it's great to go see the pieces up close.
I used to go to Storm King Art Center to see the outdoor sculptures, they look very architectural. I saw a Rodin sculpture show in the MET years ago, that was one of the better exhibits I've seen and I like to go to see Impressionist style paintings a lot too. Scottsdale / Phoenix area has quite a bit of interesting architecture thanks to Frank Lloyd Wright and there being a school for it out here.

Yeah, seeing the horses up close and in motion really makes a big difference in how one can sculpt and draw them. You can really tell when someone hasn't because their horses will look a bit stiff instead of fluid. The same would be if you were doing poses of athletes etc. My professors made us do a lot of figure drawings with nude models in the class and then you would have to draw the pose. It sounds strange but you get used to it, because you are just concentrating on trying to get it done in the amount of time the pose it for, so it makes you learn to get the pose or gesture down to it's elements faster so it's not like people would think.

You're right about the materials making a big different too. Modeling in clay or wax is good, but I did not like using things like epoxy.

Yeah, Architecture is closer to sculpture because of that 3 D part and having to make sure it will stand etc. I guess that it's also mostly driven by the economy and people and businesses wanting and having the funds to build something unique beyond just a utilitarian type block building.

I'm glad you liked Diamond Dust, it's very sad and it goes about it in a real way not ducking any punches.

Choukako is quite good, isn't it? The art and story are quite amazing. I like Akatsuki no Yona a lot too and Joou no Hana. Right now I'm reading a long running one called Princess, it's a medieval setting and spans generations of the royal families. It starts off lighter, but it gets more involved as it goes along. Gu Fang Bu Zi Shang is another Chinese one that I enjoy a lot. Bokura no Kiseki is a good mystery one, I just really like it a lot.

Oh, of course, I would love chapters of Otoyomegatari and Choukako to come out more frequently. Seems like a lot of my favorites have long waits.

It was cool, but it's already quickly getting hot here now sadly, spring is too brief. :)
Hope everything is good there!

Happy New Year!
It took me a while to get to my correspondence, one would think I've have more free time over the holidays, but it never seems to actually be so.

Well, I have tried to find ones where the guy she winds up with is unpredictable ( if it's a triangle or reverse harem) like Hiranuka no Ryuusei. Or ones where you really don't know who they will end up with like Sing Yesterday for Me. Sometimes I like knowing who she will wind up with sometimes I don't. The problem is when they make the second guy so much better I start thinking the female mc is stupid in not choosing him.... I prefer more natural, not forced way of that happening. I actually prefer romance that don't have triangles at all, where the couple does other things together rather than it just be about a triangle, especially if they are solving things or doing things with a plot like in Dengeki Daisy or Nineteen Twenty- One or Kimi no Todoke. Those make better romances to me than them just getting through a triangle romance and they are more natural to me, just the people falling in love and doing different things together.

With shounens I like action and they do make up some of my favorites like Full Metal Alchemist or Death Note etc. So I like them. But some shounen romances are more like just harems and boobs which is not really my thing or cliches like him literally falling on the girl or weird misunderstandings. Depends on the art too. And really mostly how good the author / artist are and how they develop the story no matter what genre.
However I really do read from all genres more so than most, I've nothing against them.

At that point I was reading and tracking my manga just on Onemanga and then it went down and I was frantically writing down all my lists of what I was reading and what chapter I was on and trying to find new places to read them. That happening made me double track things.

I like the ones with good art or a really good plot or characters, others are very mediocre and not that memorable. So I get you there.

Pine in the Flower Garden, yes I read that one too. The others are on my "to read" list.

I'm reading Winter Woods and UnTouchable in webtoons as well and there are some other ones like Girls of the Wilds that I read. I'm reading Cheese in the Trap on the oddsquad translations, they make an app so you can use it on naver and click their translate app and it translates it into English. I'm reading Pink Lady on a different site as well.

Yes there are several of Frank Lloyd Wright's buildings near me. There is a house that he built for his son less than a mile from my house and Tailesein West is nearby too. I've also been in a bunch of famous ones by other architects in NYC of couse like the Guggenheim Museum etc.

I need to put slides of my old sculptures up on a site. I have old slides that I need to get coverted onto online format or photo format. I have some work on deviant art with the same user name. http://inzaratha.deviantart.com/ I mostly have character sketches for my book on there though, not finished type quality just sketches for myself of my characters and the map I drew for my book. The sculptures that I did are all on slides though so I need to get them converted in format. I started sculpting horses as a little kid as I loved them so much, I lived next to a farm where they had racehorses and Spanish Andalusian horses so my art comes from seeing them running the fields next door and I like to draw and sculpt wildlife as well, all types of animals. Then I rode for many years so I think it makes a difference in how one experiences it into the art and writing.

Yeah, I also think architecture is more stable. I don't think it has the same weirdos as the art world does either. lol.

Most likely I will self publish or put my stuff on deviant or amazon books or something, I need to actually do more though. Talking about writing or drawing is not actually writing or drawing, haha.

I need to find those other seasons of Mushishi then, I really liked his stories a lot and the art is very beautiful.

Conqueror of Shamballa is good too, I enjoyed all of them and they are all well done.

The author shows a piece of history through a character's eyes and since everyone sees things differently I think there is a real validity to it. Or even if it's just for a story it makes it come alive.

Diamond Dust is not an easy read but I still thought it was really well done both in art and writing/plot and the characterization of the two mcs.

Do you read Song of the Long March ( Choukakou )? I think you will like it.

Otoyomegatari is really quite beautiful. I'm fine with it's pace since I think rushing it would affect the quality of her art, I know all those details must take time.
Hope it's not too cold there.
Hope the New Year is finding you well and brings you wonderful times. :)

Merry Christmas!
inzaratha Nov 8, 2014 6:52 PM

I guess I sort of did that, writing a recommendation or summary, sorry, lol.

Ah, well, Shoujo does have a lot of obvious plots but somehow I seem to like them. I often don't like the main female characters that much and I usually like the second guys better who just seem to be thrown in their as a plot device or to abuse. I usually start them for a sweet romance and get turned off by the obvious triangles so I do get where you are coming from there. I probably drop more shounens than shoujos though.
But still I rarely drop outright, maybe I should though.

I do like more character depth and different type of stories though.

I spent a ton of time when OneManga my original reading and tracking site went down to find new places to track and read so I get that, when sites went down it took me a lot of time to transfer stuff. I came to mal later than OneManga, mangafox etc and then did bakaupdates just for a back up in case a site goes down again. I'm not sure if my whole list is on any of them now except for here. The thought of a site going down and having to do that again makes me feel sick which is why I track each chapter and manga on several different sites in case one is ordered to take them all off again.

Yes I read a bunch of webtoons too, some of them are on here now. What ones do you read? I read ones like Looking for a Father, Story of Someone We Know, and Cheese in the Trap ( that is on here) but I also read UnTouchable and Gaussian Blur and a bunch of others too. Westwood Vibrato is a particularly good one.
I still want to be an illustrator and writer too.

My job is good but stressful of course. I studied art and history not architecture but we did learn about some of it of course. Here in my town we have some Frank Lloyd Wright buildings. I studied mostly sculpture and painting myself and also art history and regular history not connected to art, but the art would be part of it. Such as I loved medieval history and art and the Renaissance. I was a self taught horse sculptor had the talent since I was very young like 5 or 7, I think I won awards at 7 and 8 and all through college but then after I encountered some things in trying to run my gallery I just stopped sculpting and painting which a lot of my friends and family were angry about. I may go back to it when I have time in the future but it's too hard to make a career at unless you have someone to support you, like a patron or a rich man and I wouldn't do that so I just stopped. I'm rather odd that way, and very independent. Architecture is different because you can work for a firm and work on big projects but art is so dependent on people buying something that it took all of you to create it's just weird. Illustration and writing and illustrating my own books or working with an author sounds like it would work better than just fine art that is sold in galleries.

Is there another season of Mushishi? I loved the one I watched, it's very beautiful and I like how mysterious he is himself too.
I do like both FMA and FMAB. I like the art in FMA better but I like the second half of Brotherhood better and the ending Much better than in FMA but you are right in that FMA is more an intrepretation of it than following it strictly and I think both shows are great.

Yes, I really do like to know and I will get on spurts where I will learn as much as I can about something and then move onto another thing after I 've learned what I can.
Same here, we pretty much only study American and some European history and that's takes up 95 percent of the studies. And yes same only about conflicts and wars and such for other areas. We also studied western art, European art and American art and modern arts not so much from other areas. Exactly that took up all the time.
I've also learned their history from mangas as well. Yes showing their characters and feelings could be completely made up by the author so more like historical fiction which is really ok with me too as far as a story goes.

Yes, I agree, it's wonderful if it is a mixture of bad and good and more complex and sad and evocative, those stories are really good and touch you in a way you really remember them. Diamond Dust was sort of like that too. And of course I read Punpun. I really like Song of the Long March /Choukakou as well - its historical fiction and the art is lovely. Otoyomegatari is also really beautiful.

I’ve never seen any lists like that! Yours is about the biggest I’ve seen, but I haven’t looked through that many. I guess to get a really huge list like that, one would have to be either a hikikomori or a professional who does editing for a job etc. I would love to get paid to read by the way!!!

So what makes you drop them?

Yes, it is! XD

Well I put all the new ones on as this and my list on baka-updates are how I keep track of where I am at in a series, especially since most of them are ongoing. So, I only put them on hold if I know I am going to wait to finish them and I only drop them if I have a major issue with them or don’t like them. Which leaves the vast majority in my reading list… And yes, I am also reading a bunch of webtoons and watching dramas, but at least with the dramas I pretty much just watch one at a time or so. I really want the webtoons here on Mal for my own selfish reason of making them easier to track. LOL
Well, I actually just wanted to be an author/ illustrator, but got regular jobs to pay the bills and then happened upon this and I’ve stayed here. I guess I did used to work at a horse re-hab place all through college though too. Damaged horses, damaged kids. I hope they get help and I feel like I have a purpose. The whole commercial aspect of work never felt right to me, I just cannot see myself working for some huge corporation, so I am here. Architecture sounds great too. I went to school for art and history myself and always thought I would be more in museums or doing creative work. I hope to get back to that in the future.
I don’t read novels as much as I used to either, yes my own reading and drawing and creative pursuits always seem to get put onto the back as I have to do my regular work first and run out of time.
Oh, yes, I definitely agree, about the quality of the work. I am much pickier about animation. I like beautiful ones. Such as the ones like Mushishi, where the backgrounds and art itself are very well done. I do not like the “moe” looking ones at all, where all the faces look very the same and very cartoony. Those seem to be the more popular style now, and it’s not to my liking at all. It looks like it was just a rushed commercial production. I prefer more beautiful artistic ones. So I also prefer older ones. Plus a good story and plot as well, of course.
I have seen both Full Metal Alchemist and FMA Brotherhood. I did love the first, but after finally watching the second - I prefer Brotherhood, it is longer ( more complete) and the story line is more true. I especially preferred the ending of Brotherhood to FMA. I wish I had watched it sooner but I thought it was just a remake and it’s not really it is better.

Exactly. I would go through Wikipedia and look up the characters and time periods for the historical ones. In the US, when I was in school, Eastern history was just briefly touched on, if at all. It just is not taught in our schools in any type of depth, so reading them I would feel something was lost in that. (And that is even as a history major! ) So I started reading about the different figures in history first; such as Oda Nobunaga, in some works, or whatever historical person was featured in it. Now in - Ravages of Time - I think it’s such an interesting work that not knowing more about the time period would be a dis-service to it. However, it is more speculative and does not follow history that closely either, it shows more about characters and their plots, schemes and motives than maybe just the history of the events. It makes it rather better as historical fiction as it is very exciting but with a lot of political intrigue too. I think the writer wants to show more of what they were like as people with both good and bad parts to them, not the way they are portrayed in history books but more alive. If that makes sense.
It is hard to learn the Asian symbols as there are so many! We only have 26 symbols in our alphabet…
It’s very cool meeting people from other countries and cultures this way, you learn things and tell things to each other that you just would not get in only talking to people from your own country and you learn about the people and cultures in a way you would not from just reading it on line or studying it.
I guess more of them are translated in English! Yes.
Yes, people don’t like the truth you are right! I don’t want a diet of stories that are just one way. Not all light and not all dark. I like reading a mixture of both, it’s good then or first some of one type and then some of the other type.
Oh, yes I have read some of Asano Inio works too.
I also like those types of stories as well, I read from a variety of styles and genres, I don’t have just one favorite type or style either. :)

inzaratha Sep 23, 2014 1:56 PM
I don't see too many lists over a thousand really. But I've always been a big reader, so I get it. There probably are many on my list that I should just drop, but usually it's lack of time rather than not liking it. The ones I actually dropped, I had issues with the stories, didn't like them or something happened that turned me off on it or something. Usually I will not drop them, I like to finish them. But Yes, sometimes I want too because of the story being disappointing or frustrating, I guess I try to stick with them.
But, there are many on my reading list that are pretty average that I'm not in a hurry to read, but most times it's lack of time, or it's they are updating too slow or too fast, so that makes ongoings difficult. I have too many ongoings which makes it hard to put them aside and just complete ones. If that makes sense.

I want to finish more of the completed ones. For a while there, I was starting all the new ones that came out which made my list of ongoings too big. It's the same as what you said - I am always looking for new things to read, and it's hard to resist a new series that I see out that looks interesting or cute! lol

I see you don't put the ones you just started on your list, so if you did your list would be even bigger! I do put them on, which is how it got so huge because I was reading all the ones 'on hold' too and decided to wait to read them once they complete or I have time etc.

I work in a school that is a residential treatment center for kids that have been in trouble, sort of like juvenile delinquents. I run the school office so it's very varied and lots of work.

Do you work or go to school? Do you also read novels? I was reading a lot of sci fi and fantasy novels before I got hooked on manga so I will read them in between sometimes and I will probably go back to them sometime too.

I prefer reading as well, but if I watch them I am pickier and find the best to watch and sometimes I watch anime that I have read the manga and sometimes it is separate. I don't like ones that deviate from the manga and have a lot of filler. I also like if they have very good animation and soundtrack.

I'm not so familar with some of your favorites I will have to check them out sometime! lol

Usually I am fine with the history in manga indeed I really enjoy it - it's just certain ones, and I find that more in Chinese manhua than the others, I wish I knew more about the history as I feel like I am missing something that I should know going in. I read all of those manga, manhwa, manhua and Thai as well. (in translation of course) That particular story ( The Ravages of Time) is just more complex than usual and the plot requires more knowledge. It's fascinating and well done though but yes, it's soooo long that it's sort of too much!

It's great that it has helped you with practicing English though!
I would like to learn both Japanese and Korean too. I watch a lot of movies and series from those countries as well but I only understand the words that are used in manga a lot such as sempai or oppa! lol I think that we do learn a lot of basic words with reading manga though. However the different alphabets are very hard for westerners learning them, probably with Russian it is similar for you as you need to learn a different set of alphabet writing systems to learn both English and then other sets for Asian symbols so that is a lot.

Yes, There is a lot more manga than when I started reading it too and more groups doing it. I have other friends from eastern Europe and they also read the English translations more than those in their languages as well.

I agree, I have a problem with tragedy and SAD stories too. I guess that in American stories we expect happy endings, but most Asian stories are not like that and the audience is used to it often being a tragedy. Rather than the ending though it's the bleak, sad ones, where the whole story is sad that are the worst.

Yesterday no Utte is not that sad, and it is not a tragedy as far as I know, so you don't need to worry about that, it's more the whole unrequited love aspect that makes it sad, none of the characters have bad lives. But it is still ongoing so I keep hoping!

What are your favorite types of stories to read? As in themes or styles.

Thanks and nice to hear from you. :)

inzaratha Sep 21, 2014 1:37 PM
Hi, Thanks. They have a limit on personal messages and I need to delete ones in order to send every time, they should increase it. :)

I looked at your lists this morning. You have a huge completed list! Your reading list is like mine huh, Good job! :0 It's nice to see other big readers! We both read a lot more than we watch too.

Thanks for the recommendation of Juuni Kokuki - that sounds like my favorite type!! :) I had not heard of it before either, but I love Saver and ones of that type of genre a lot.
The most intricate plot development is probably The Ravages of Time - if you like Song of the Long March that one and Joou no Hana have similarities with complex political issues and historical type settings. I have The Ravages of Time on hold to learn more history of China as sometimes it feels very foreign because I do not know the historical characters of that country as well, but it is very good. Only those two are historical not so much fantasy and I prefer the ones that have more fantasy elements added just because they are interesting and fun.

Are there that many manga translated into Russian? That's great that these get translated into so many languages!

Yes, basically I am trying to get more of my current and on hold ones completed because my reading list is ridiculously long so it's hard to keep up while working full time. I want to finish off more of the completed ones on my list to bring it down.

If you don't like unrequited love stories then you probably will find Yesterday no Utte very slow and frustrating and sad, yes, I find it that way myself even though I really do like it, it's difficult to keep seeing characters be sad. It is well written though, but I prefer one pairing and I still don't know if that will be the outcome. I do like his stories.

I think you do very well with English - don't worry! Many of my friends on here are from many different countries and I find that interesting. Not a problem at all here :) XD
MissBonney Sep 2, 2013 4:36 AM

MissBonney Jul 14, 2013 4:00 AM

MissBonney Jun 18, 2013 11:23 AM
