Well.... they did that in the manga too, just earlier when freiza was in second and third form which is way more plausible.
It's just repetitive. Doesn't add anything meaningful to the story and takes up a ton of time. There's other filler in DBZ that's actually really great, but that scene was probably the worst of it.
I think the funniest stretch of filler in the anime as compared to the manga is in the frieza saga tho
In the manga Goku gets kicked into the water during their final battle and he just gets back up again. But in the anime they make it seem like he died for 2 whole episodes. And they have Frieza fight Gohan for some reason.... it's just awful, lmaoo
