As for Japanese, I'm studying kanji now and I hope that 1,006 Chinese characters should be enough for a RAW manga that I want to complete. I think that it'll also be enough for Sakura Wars 1-4 which never got western releases. I don't mind learning 1,200 to 1,945 Chinese characters (3,000 is needed to master Cantonese and Mandarin).

By the way, I'm a big fan of Megumi Hayashibara also.
